the most depressing song: help me find it!

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

"Give my love to rose" by Johnny Cash.
Spoiler:
I found him by the railroad track this morning
I could see that he was nearly dead
I knelt down beside him and I listened
Just to hear the words the dying fellow said

He said they let me out of prison down in Frisco
For ten long years I've paid for what I've done
I was trying to get back to Louisiana
To see my Rose and get to know my son

[Chorus:]
Give my love to Rose please won't you mister
Take her all my money, tell her to buy some pretty clothes
Tell my boy his daddy's so proud of him
And don't forget to give my love to Rose

Tell them I said thanks for waiting for me
Tell my boy to help his mom at home
Tell my Rose to try to find another
For it ain't right that she should live alone

Mister here's a bag with all my money
It won't last them long the way it goes
God bless you for finding me this morning
And don't forget to give my love to Rose

[Chorus:]
Give my love to Rose please won't you mister
Take her all my money, tell her to buy some pretty clothes
Tell my boy his daddy's so proud of him
And don't forget to give my love to Rose
Life is beautiful.

It's probably been mentioned before but both Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead get my vote.

Also the original sound-track to Requiem for a Dream performed by the Kronos quartet, it's called Lux Aeterna and it sounds more than sad.. almost hopeless, like a slow, inevitable decent into the abyss. From what I hear it goes very well with the film. The more grand "operatic" version is good, but lacks the fragile pain of Clint Mansell's orignial.

Oh, and Atmosphere by Joy Division.

Definitely seconded. This is the only piece of music that ever made me cry, although lots of arrangements of Vocalise, Op. 34 No. 14 by Rachmaninoff have come close. It really depends on the interpretation though. Words tend to obscure the emotion in truly beautiful music imo.

I personally think that the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven is sort of depressing sometimes.

also Chopin's Nocturnes ... one of my favourites in particular
Chopin
Opus 72 E minor
Raindrops Prelude

Mad World - Gary Jules ( i know alot of people mentioned this too but it really is a sad fucking song)

And plenty of people mentioned Elliot Smith... thats just a given but some of my favourites be Elliot would be
Elliot Smith songs
Waltz #2
Needle in the Hay
Miss Misery
Sweet Adeline
Tomorrow Tomorrow

Bright Eyes songs
Arienette
Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
Sunrise, Sunset

I don't blame you
Maybe Not
Crossbones Style

The White Stripes
Truth doesn't make a Noise
Appleblossom
I fought Piranhas
Why can't you be nicer to me
Offend in Every Way
When I hear my name
Jolene ( i know its a dolly parton cover but this version seems more depressing than hers)

Nancy Sinatra- Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) - after Kill Bill I am surprised noone put this song....

Son House -Grinnin In Your Face

The Doors -The End

Beirut
Elephant Gun
The White Whale
Mount Wroclai

jens lekman - A Pocketful of Money
jens lekman - Your Beat Kicks Back Like Death (sort of sad but pretty)

"The Hill" sung by Marketa Irglova
It's part of the soundtrack for the movie "Once", about Irglova and fellow musician Glen Hansard.

Also, "Unintended" by Muse makes me a little teary, though I don't think the lyrics are not really sad in that way.

The same goes for "Such Great Heights" when it's done by Iron and Wine. This was actually the first version of the song I heard and I like it better when it's slowed down.

The Beethoven is nice though. I don't usually find it depressing tbh. Chopin is nice, but it's again not music that makes me sad. It's nice to listen to when I am sad though. :)

I didn't see them in what parts of the thread I've read, so I'll add:

Cream - World of Pain
The Byrds - I Knock At Every Door
Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven (wouldn't be so sad if I didn't know the story behind it)

I nominate Heartattck In A Layby, by Porcupine Tree. I suppose it's not depressing in every sense (the guy dies knowing/thinking someone loves him) but even so. A beautiful, but incredibly sad, song.

I agree with all of the Bright Eyes songs that were already mentioned, and I think Lua, If Winter Ends and No Lies, Just Love are really depressing too.
As for Muse, Hoodoo and Sing for Absolution are fairly depressing too (this is my second post, and the second time I've mentioned Sing for Absolution  )
I'll add Exit Music (for a Film) and No Surprises as depressing Radiohead songs

I Hate Myself - Less Than Nothing

60 watts, brighter than my future,
an empty forty, fuller than my life,
there must be more, sometimes i don't think so,
maybe i'm right. maybe there's no such thing as a brighter side
A sultry night stare at moons from rooftops,
A broken engine, poisoned never dry,
I pour my heart out to a god that doesn't listen,
You said you'd save me. You said you'd love me always but you lied.
And i can't dry my eyes and there is nothing left inside,
one day. the day. the day that i said i,
my heart inside was cold so that you didn't know,
so all and you, you won't love me at all,
the leaves come down,
there is no sound,
and if i fall would you notice at all?
the thought of me repulses me,
but you'd say you took me anyway,
i am so alone on a corroded city rooftop,
i saw you walking, you didn't say anything,
you always told me that you'd never stop loving me,
but you stopped before you started and now all i have is lies.
What am i gonna be?
Who am i gonna be?
afraid,
repressed,
And now that i feel lost,
Well i wish that you had grown
while i bleed all alone,
the falling rain
is what is left for me
We’re gonna be
what's left for me
what is there to learn?
there is less than nothing,
i thought you'd be. be there for me
you weren't there. you weren't anywhere.
You lied right to my face
you broke my fucking heart,
One day, one day you tore my heart apart.
And i have nothing,
And i am nothing,
i’m piss,
i’m shit,
i am less than nothing.

Brand New's "Am I Wrong" is pretty sad, as are Brand New's "Guernica"; "Pictures of You", The Cure; "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", The Beatles.

If I were to pick a depressing black metal song, it would be Dead As Dreams, by Weakling. However, it isn't posted on YouTube, so I can't share it here. My second choice, though very different, would be En Ring Til Aa Herske by Burzum. Anything by Drudkh or Lurker of Chalice would also suffice.

I agree with everyone saying Dance With the Devil - Immortal Technique.
I heard it while reading the lyricsand it was the first time I ever cried while listening to a song.

I don't know why people have mentioned Sigur Ros in this thread and not mentioned Dauðalagið.

Personally I find Ný Batterí more angry than depressing.

Untitled 7 ("Dauðalagið") is just crazy. Dauðalagið actually means "Death song" I think.

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=X745CM095vE

That's part two, since it's a 13 minute song, and I'm not sure how many people would have the patience for the first half.

Whoever said Motion picture Soundtrack - That's my second one.

Third vote - How to disappear completely (also radiohead) or possibly even True Love Waits.

Not sure why I didn't think of Louise Louisa by Mew until now. It's kind of associated in my mind with a breakup that happened a while before I first heard it. I must have just been remembering it or something. I'm not sure how depressing it would be outside of that mindset.

I'd have to agree with King of Frogs (ok, never expected to hear myself say that at any point) and say Street Spirit by Radiohead, I'd also say that Rylynn by Andy Mckee (no words but a very sad melody) and Storm by Lifehouse are both contenders too.

Seconding the guy who mentioned Space Dye Vest- Dream Theater.

'And I'll smile and I'll learn to pretend
And I'll never be open again
And I'll have no more dreams to defend
And I'll never be open again'

It's probably my favourite sad song.

When A Blind Man Cries- Deep Purple. The version on the remastered Machine Head album is better, but not by much.

and Child In Time- Deep Purple. Lovers of epic guitar soloage should probably listen to this just for the solo as well I think.

The Lotus Eaters -Nevermore. The story behind the entire album is ridiculously sad, but this track is pretty much the ultimate 'the world is really shit and I want to die' anthem IMO.

Also:

The Crown Of Sympathy- My Dying Bride:

'Come dress me with your body, and comfort me
I dreamt of a dead child in my sleep
I wear a terrible mark in my head
my clean, white bed, it calls to me, I must lie down
and I want you to lay with me, in sympathy
no sad adieus on a balcony, for one last time, just walk with me
at the beautiful gate of the temple, we must be saved
for deadened, icy pain covers all the earth.'

You could (successfully) argue that they're trying a bit too hard, but it does get really depressing. It's definitely an acquired taste though.

Opeth's To Bid You Farewell is also a great sad song. But I tend to find it strangely uplifting towards the end.

So yeah, TGG contributes lots of sad Metal and some old fashioned Rawk.
What must be endured, can be endured. -Paul Atreides.

Making people feel slightly weird about saying my name on teh intertubes is mostly why I keep it.

Has anyone heard the Alison Crowe version of Hallelujah? It's the most moving one I have heard, just a piano and her soaring voice over it, depressing in a good way.

there's a certain set of songs, arranged in order, that can bring me to tears, and I will not divulge it so you cannot use it to foil my evil plans thirty years from now (breaking news: some old guy used the wayback machine to bring the villain known as Midnight to tears, foiling his evil plans) but the kicker of it is Wish You Were Here, by Pink Floyd. That song gets me all misty-eyed every time.
