the most depressing song: help me find it!

I've heard that its this, and that may be true, but there's nothing that can sort out this sort of thing like a poll. So, suggest depressing songs (with youtube*/last.fm/upload if you have/want to), and at some arbitrary point I'll make a poll of them.

my first one is this: 'the partisan' by Leonard Cohen. It is fairly bleak - but do you have better?

Since the song was found so fast this thread should be about depressing songs in general. There are certainly enough of them.

I find this song to be incredibly depressing, which is a feat, considering there are no lyrics.

Motion Picture Soundtrack by Radiohead is a pretty goddam depressing song...

Disregarding the other threads, I'd say that the saddest song, not necessarily the most depressing, is Samuel Barber's Adagio For Strings. It's a beautiful piece of music but it's been used in the sad bitz of basically every movie ever. And Tiesto remixed it which is just sorta sad.

Gloomy Sunday is very sad and harsh, but it is not near as emotionally affecting as the prior post's suggestion. Barber's use of crescendo and layers has more effect on the emotions than a baritone hollering about his sadness, sad as that sadness may be. This is merely my opinion, but I think Barber's work had much more depth, and therefore could reach much farther in to the mind, soul, etc.

Tiesto's remix was a bit annoying, though.

Nah, I'm still looking. Seeing as I haven't heard that song yet, its hard to say. (See, all cyberspace did was find the song that is meant to be the most depressing. Show some imagination!)

But I'm not interested in extremes, and its not about your favourite sad song either. I want "Oh me yarm my life is pointless, I should end it now" type of song, not just your average emotear. So although there are similar threads, I think this one is justified.

Also William Orbit, but I think that one (might) have been OK.

Narsil: I'll give it a listen tonight. Also, I've only heard Motion Picture Soundtrack once, and I don't really remember it being that depressing.

Hey, you wanted songs that say "I should end it now." "Oh mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" seemed to fit the bill pretty well.

So does being famously, iconically depressed take a band out of the running for most depressing song?

I'd also nominate Nightwish's Dead Boy's Poem. Listening to it might not get you down, since her accent makes it hard to discern the lyrics, and the boy's voice blends into the music. But if you read the lyrics, they're dang depressing.

That list is filled with stock sad songs, I think. I do agree with the Elliott Smith inclusion. That song is a real downer, but in a good way. Like a quaalude. In fact, I'm fairly certain any Elliott Smith song is the most depressing song ever. His delivery and musical sense is crushing, but in a good way. Like you have a trample fetish.

After listening to it (check my last.fm profile if you don't believe me!), yeah it is quite depressing. And no, being famously, iconically depressed doesn't take the band out of the running. But it doesn't guarantee an instant win.

What do you want the song for? The most depressing song is going to depend on context, for instance "I love my Daddy" might be a cheerful song, but when played in a movie after the kid's Dad just died, well that is more depressing than a song intended to be sad in many cases. The most depressing songs are often the ones that are only depression in ironic circumstances and not intentionally so. Much like real depression a lot of sadness is born from seeing a happiness you believe you can never attain.

Well, if we're talking about depressing songs, then it should be depressing just listening to the song.

It's sorta odd how it ended up being used as a song of mourning, as it was originally written as a meditation. But totally understandable.

30k ft by Assemblage 23 is fairly depressing, but I don't really want to link to it on YouTube, as I think every version of it they have up has 9/11 footage attached to it. I think I've listened to it about three times, ever, because it's a little unnerving to me.

Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton - Knives Don't Have Your Back.
The entire album.
Here's a pleasantly depressing sample (may put you in despair):
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ij5CXOb1WE8

The National - Baby, We'll Be Fine
All night I lay on my pillow and pray
For my boss to stop me in the hallway
Lay my head on his shoulder and say
Son, I've been hearing good things

I wake up without warning and go flying around the house
In my sauvignon fierce, freaking out
Take a forty-five minute shower and kiss the mirror
And say, look at me
Baby, we'll be fine
All we gotta do is be brave and be kind

I put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile
I don't know how to do this
I'm so sorry for everything
[repeat]

Baby, come over, I need entertaining
I had a stilted, pretending day
Lay me down and say something pretty
Lay me back down where I wanted to stay
Just say something perfect, something I can steal
Say, look at me
Baby, we'll be fine
All we've gotta do is be brave and be kind

I pull off your jeans, and you spill jack and coke in my collar
I melt like a witch and scream
I'm so sorry for everything

Immortal Technique - Dance With The Devil

I have yet to heard a sadder, more depressing song than this one.

If you don't get depressed after listening to this song, there's something wrong with you.

My god, I've heard this song before. Gets me down every time.

I kind of find All the Same by the Sick Puppies depressing. I don't think I have ever cried harder than when I watched the free hugs video... but that was at a very bad time in my life.

A lot of songs by A Perfect Circle I find depressing (only a few listed here):
3 Libras
The Nurse Who Loved Me (I'm not exactly sure what I find depressing about this song. Maybe it is the fact that I come from a family with a history of mental illness)
A Stranger

Well, In the Sun by Michael Stipe/Coldplay has pushed me from a normal mood to tears several times... I haven't heard the original, so I don't know if that's a better version or not.

Love songs always make me really sad. It may just be me and my ability to become depressed at anything, but...

The Origin of Love is one I also find incredibly sad and bittersweet, although it may be me. In any case it is a good song, from the musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Let's see if I got the links right... EDIT: Nope. Second try.

Eli The Barrow Boy
Leslie Anne Levine
I Wish You Love... song I played to my ex when I found out he got accepted to school in Japan last year.

Billie Holiday is cited as singing the most depressing song ever. I can't remember what it is, and it's not Strange Fruit.

Even though that's a pretty melancholic hammer to the brain as it is.

If anyone can find a song more depressing than that, I'd be 63% surprised, 1/5 depressed, and 18% chastised by mathematicians (32% for mixing percentages with fractions and 2/3 for still not getting it right.)

By Jove, so it is. In my defence, I avoid linkage when I'm at work. After a small incident involving a frozen computer and a 100% volume rendition of the McRoll song that I'm pretty sure was enjoyed, rather than endured, by the entire office.

I remember hearing the song on an episode of Have I Got News For You and thinking "damn, that's gloomy". Wait, it may have been QI, but I remember Ian Hislop making a remark about it.

Definitely QI :P

I'm guessing it was the D series (death?)

The saddest song ever is "Gloomy Sunday" sung by Billie Holiday, also known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song". The song was originally written by Rezs┼Ĺ Seress, who broke up with his girlfriend. After the song became popular, they got together briefly but then she committed suicide by poisoning herself and left only a two-word suicide note that said simply "Gloomy Sunday".

I can't believe I didn't mention Hurt -- Originally by NIN, but I prefer Johnny Cash's cover of it. It just hits me harder... doesn't sound like a country song at all, so even if you don't like country (I don't actually) you should listen to this song.
