Bands you're currently enjoying

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

See them live. In a small venue. It blew my mind seeing the old Asian guy with long white hair from the merch table get on stage and rock the hell out of everything.

Sonic Youth.

For a long time I've been limited to very few of their albums: the ones I either owned (Daydream Nation) or was able to get from local libraries (Rather Ripped, A Thousand Leaves and Dirty). But I recently discovered that almost all of their songs are streamable on Last.fm, so I've been gorging myself on Goo, Evol, Sister and the rest. :mrgreen:

From one Sonic Youth fan to another, I recommend you listen to the album BOSS by Magik Markers. Lee Renaldo produced it. It's a terribly underrated masterpiece.

Rubik. Indie rock with a twist of ambient, sounds wonderful.

Rites of Spring.
I can't think of much to say about them except that they were incredibly awesome and forward-thinking, while still retaining all the familiar aspects of 80s hardcore that I love.

Hauschka, Joanna Newsom, and Original Silence. The first is a, experimental composer who plays the prepared piano. The second is a "freak folk" harpist, and her album Ys is amazing. The last is a free jazz/noise group featuring Thurston Moore from Sonic Youth and Mats Gustafsson, a fantastic saxophone player.

Dilinger Four! Jesus christ this band is good. Their new album is quite swell, as well.

Brad Sucks is a one-man band I recently picked up, and I enjoy the music, although it reminds me too much of the music I listened to in high school.

Also been listening to the Weakerthans more as of late, not that I ever didn't enjoy them, it's just that you can listen to an album so many times.. :D

Jane, a side project of Panda Bear from Animal Collective.
múm, an experimental electronica/post-rock band from Iceland with some freak-folk style.
Avey Tare & Kría Brekkan, a husband and wife collaboration between the lead singer for Animal Collective and the lead singer (?) for múm.

Holy shitbrickin' awesome. That's a life goal, right there.

Joanna Newsom and Original Silence are sublime. I've never heard Hauschka before ~ my experience with experimental prepared piano is limited to the (admittedly, pretty expansive) Conlon Nancarrow. Is Hauschka of a similar wierdly-compelling-robot-music bent?

Speaking of robot music... Hangedup! The sound of a million tiny proletarian worker-ants furiously building missile systems out of rusty girders. :mrgreen:
Also been listening a lot lately to Blank Dogs, Josephine Foster, and Why?
Good times.

I've never listened to Conlon Nancarrow, but here's a great Hauschka track with an equally awesome video.

Metallica - ...And Justice For All and the new Death Magnetic. I really enjoy the new album. It's got some good riffs to it, pretty solid album.

Atmosphere - I've been spinning his Lucy Ford EP about once a day for 2 weeks now. Something about his story telling on that album just keeps me coming back. Highly recommended for those who are looking for some solid beats and lyrics that still blow my mind as I try to dissect them on my nth listen.

The Soundtrack to Avenue Q - I saw they had some songs at the local karaoke bar, so I've been spinning this one a lot lately to get familiar with some of the songs.

Boards of Canada (I find myself enjoying electronic albums far more when I'm able to put my finger on any selected track and remember how it goes. Now I reached that point with Boards of Canada, their records are much more entrancing, disturbing and rewarding than they used to be - especially Geogaddi. Music Has the Right to Children, albeit being their "masterpiece", has a few cuts that don't really do it for me, but the Kaini Industries / Bocuma / Roygbiv sequence is an absolute highpoint in their career, to me);
Cocteau Twins (slowly made their way into my brain, and now, I can't let go anymore. Heaven or Las Vegas, Blue Bell Knoll and ESPECIALLY Treasure got me in a firm, definitive manner);
Stereolab (can't help it - time and time again their stuff pops up in my brain. Hooray to Margerine Eclipse!);
The Flashbulb (but only Soundtrack to a Vacant Life, for now, which is amazing nonetheless. It gives me a feeling of "journey" very similar to what I get from Squarepusher's Ultravisitor. I have to try that on roadtrips).

William Shatner - No seriously, the "Has Been" album is fantastic. Music by Ben Folds, William Shatner doing spoken word over it, it's actually really quite good. I enjoy listening to it occasionally it's got some really good tracks on it. His duet with Henry Rollins is classic.

Gang Gang Dance, a neo-tribal experimental band, and Deerhunter, an amazing shoegaze group. Deerhunter's Cryptograms has been one of my favorite albums for a while, but I picked up Microcastle recently, and I think it's quite a bit better.
