Damned hard question!

I have no concrete answer, but a tentative list of 10 would be:

Falkenbach
Ensiferum
Immortal
Darkthrone
Naglfar
Bathory
Marduk
Wyrd
Korpiklanni
Tyr

Lots of other bands could have been named...If I make another list of 10 in a week or two I'm sure there would be a few changes to the list.

"Weird Al" Yankovic
Elton John
Billy Joel
Jimmy Buffett
Neil Diamond
Boston
Meat Loaf & Jim Steinman
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Nightwish

JB or CCR could potentially be replaced with Luca Turilli or Nox Arcana. What can I say -- I like a lot of great music!

Recently, looking at my playlist, it's:
  • Stevie Wonder
  • Nina Simone
  • Buena Vista Social Club
  • Beck Iron And Wine
  • Joy Division
  • Radiohead
  • Eminem Sigur Rós
  • Bob Dylan
  • Otis Redding Amon Tobin
  • Carlos Santana David Bowie ('Heroes' phase)

Heydaylicious! These are all pretty much subject to change, on a regular basis, except those in bold.

This is kinda in order, but my favorite bands change so very often.

Streetlight Manifesto
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Death Cab for Cutie
Less Than Jake
Alkaline Trio
Against Me!
Arcade Fire
Bright Eyes
Suburban Legends
Dan Potthast

There's a lot of bands I could put in place of Dan Potthast, considering he's only one guy his scope is kinda limited, but he's so damn addictive.

Hm...subject to change drastically, depending on my mood. These are just the top ten bands/artists that spring to my mind at the moment, along with the fact that I didn't want to over-represent any one genre.

maudlin of the Well
Godspeed You! Black Emperor
Isis
Okkervil River
Opeth
Bob Dylan
City of Caterpillar
Burzum
Esoteric
Converge
Velvet Underground (I realize this is eleven)

However.

1. Beatles
2. Nirvana.
3. Bob Marley.
4.TBD
5.TBD
. . .
10. TBD

I'm new to music.

Well, looking at your list, you don't have quite a broad range of musical tastes...

My musical taste is undergoing a shift right now, but here's what it's been:

Meatloaf
Alison Krauss
Goo Goo Dolls
Simon & Garfunkel
Flogging Molly
Madonna (can't help it)
Johnny Cash
Michael Ball
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bernadette Peters
Israel Kamakawiwo (sorry! I couldn't stand to kick any of the other ones out)

I like distinctive voices. Maybe Bonnie Tyler should go in there just for that.
Raise up the torch and light the way.

This is a tough one. I have a clearly defined top 3:

Red Hot Chili Peppers
Modest Mouse
Rise Against

After that it gets a bit more muddled. I suppose:

The Offspring
The White Stripes
Robert Allen Zimmerman (If you don't know who this is, google it and prepare to feel retarded)
Jimi Hendrix
Vampire Weekend
Death Cab for Cutie
Led Zeppelin

I could see Coheed and Cambria wiggling into that list in the future, but I'm not sure who it would replace.
So it goes.

It's hard to choose! There's so much distinct stuff I listen to that I wouldn't be making justice to all the stuff I like by just listing artists, but, oh well... here's an attempt.

  • Mike Oldfield
  • Os Mutantes
  • Jean Michel Jarre
  • Squarepusher
  • Sigur Rós
  • Mogwai
  • The Flaming Lips
  • Talking Heads
  • NEU!
  • Kraftwerk

Unlisted, but deserving: Pink Floyd, Autechre, Radiohead, The Moody Blues, Brian Eno... and others.

Wow, i hate this kinda thing haha, my top 10 list usually stretches about 50 if given the opportunity;

Bob Dylan
Cat Power
Pink Floyd
Pulp
Nirvana
Bright Eyes
Queens of the Stone Age
Elbow
Muddy Waters
Public Enemy

Off teh top of my head they're artists i love, but there's so many missed out really, certainly a lot more obscure stuff as most of that is pretty mainstream i guess. Bothered.

The Olivia Tremor Control
of Montreal
bob hund
The Apples in Stereo
Neutral Milk Hotel
Pixies
The Microphones
Jaymay
Beirut
Animal Collective

If it's last.fm, my results are bit different (I just reset it recently and I haven't been listening to music on my computer since I got a stereo).

1. Okkervil River
2. Mountain Goats
3. maudlin of the Well
4. Pig Destroyer (skewed by having a lot of very short songs)
5. Isis
6. The Good Life (might as well throw in Cursive to go along with them)
7. Converge
8. Have A Nice Life
9. The Arcade Fire / eluvium (eluvium is really only up because I sleep to it)
10. Pg. 99 (might as well throw in City of Caterpillar, Malady, and Verse En Coma)
