My last.fm list is significantly different, as well. Note that I've only been using last.fm for roughly 14 months, which may account for the lack of plays for some of the artists I listed earlier, and the large amount of plays for artists I have encountered rather recently(3, for example).

Ayreon - 2,027
Rush - 1,927
Tomahawk - 1,628
Fantômas - 1,625
Porcupine Tree - 1,412
3 - 1,360
Star One - 1,282
Opeth - 1,219
Acid Bath - 1,113
Collective Soul - 1,005

Which happens to make up roughly half of my total plays.

These are in no particular order ~ just the 10 bands that I think have meant the most to me over the course of my life:

The Microphones
Okkervil River
The Flaming Lips
The Beatles
Animal Collective
The Incredible String Band
Boredoms
Neutral Milk Hotel
Joanna Newsom
The Velvet Underground

My last.fm stats are mostly in tune with this.

Is this the top ten best artists/bands or our top ten favorite artists/bands? It might adjust my order a little.

Pink Floyd
Rammstein
KISS
Fair to Midland
Meat Loaf
Rage Against the Machine
Mushroomhead
Disturbed
Avenged Sevenfold
The Police

I don't know why I was worried about the order; halfway down I realized I had no clue what order to do for anything.

10! I struggle to think of 4. I usually listen to on or two artists at a time. At the moment it's Eels. Absolutely stunning music.

As many others have said, mine transition a lot. I'll go for overall.

Thea Gilmore
Peter Gabriel
Massive Attack
Nightwish
Assemblage 23
VNV Nation
Splashdown
Tori Amos
They Might Be Giants
Cirque du Soleil

I think this may be somewhat aligned by current to furthest in the past.

Let's see... this is the sort of thing that changes a lot so here's a current snapshot:

Porcupine Tree (All other Steven Wilson projects [especially Bass Communion] also, but that would take up too many top 10 places :P)
Nine Inch Nails
Radiohead
Portishead
Mehuggah
Opeth
Pink Floyd
Squarepusher
Battles
Brian Eno

Quite diverse, I tend to pick and choose the best from a lot of genres. Used to be exclusively a prog fan but eventually I realised even prog can get old. Yeah yeah, smite me already.

I'm not including anyone that's better-known as a composer (e.g. Bach or Beethoven) because that's an entirely different list. No, I'm not combining them. Anyway, my top 10 favorite artists in no particular order:

  • Sigur Ros
  • Rush
  • Pink Floyd
  • Led Zeppelin
  • Yes
  • Van Halen
  • Miles Davis
  • Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau

Just composers:

  • Franz Schubert
  • Hans Zimmer
  • Yasunori Mitsuda
  • Gustav Holst
  • John Adams
  • Katsuhisa Hattori
  • Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Benoit Jutras

I just don't like Uematsu's work as much, though part of that's due to which games I've played. Granted, I was thinking Final Fantasy 7 and later with him, instead of 6 and earlier (man, FF6 had a great soundtrack). Now that I think about it, though, I should have put Koji Kondo on there.

I don't really get why more people don't. It's pretty much as well done as the rest of their performance.

The ten favourite composers idea is interesting, though I feel like to some extent I'm talking out my arse - haven't listened to nearly enough to be sure I wouldn't like others' stuff better.
Alexandr Borodin
Antonin Dvorak
John Adams
J. S. Bach (duh)
Igor Stravinsky
Philip Glass
Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Steve Reich
Bela Bartok
And I guess I have to throw in Beethoven, though he's really not quite my thing.

Clearly. But is there ever really that much for two 70's prog rock fans to discuss? Does it ever feel like you're having the same conversation over and over again?

"What's your favourite Genesis album?"
"Selling England By The Pound."
"Mine Too."
"What do you think Jon Anderson's lyrics are really about?"
"I don't care."
"Me neither."
"What's your favourite Gentle Giant album?"
"Free Hand."
"I don't like that one."
"Wanna fight about it?"
"Not particularly."
"We should jam sometime!"
"I'll call you in sixteen months when I have some time off work."
"Guinness?"
"Yes!"

- Elbow
- The Dear Hunter
- The Corrs**
- Eric Whitacre
- Radiohead

- Nobuo Uematsu
- The Books

* As previously mentioned, the man behind Porcupine Tree, Blackfield, No-Man, and a few others. Probably my single primary musical idol. Much looking forward to his solo album in November.
** Bit of a guilty pleasure... but not really. They just had a gorgeous debut album and then squandered their potential by having eight different producers on their second. But I'll never give up hope...

Guns N' Roses
AC/DC
Van Halen
Alice Cooper
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Def Leppard
Aerosmith
