For the first 38 seconds I thought it was OK, if a bit disjointed.

Then she started singing. *cringe*

No, no, no. I believe you want Paul Anka's version.

Yeah, Jimi Hendrix sure ruined 'all along the watchtower'.

Just because his version didn't suck doesn't mean that the original wasn't better.

Speaking of Dylan covers, I have a problem with The Byrds' cover of 'My Back Pages.' This isn't because it's a bad cover. It sounds quite nice, actually. However, that is explicitly a song by Bob Dylan about Bob Dylan, more specifically his apprehensions and misgivings about his protest-singer years. This is HIS song, and for anybody else to sing it kind of seems like they're passing off his diaries as their own.

I don't know if he's on the one you posted, but there's a version of that Foo Fighters cover which features Brian May playing guitar. It's on the Mission: Impossible 2 OST (don't ask how I came to hear that...)

I actually like this version. I find it more soulful. And I like the guitar lick (?) at the beginning.

Nah, by far the best is the version by the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain. Especially his illustration of the line "and I forget just how I taste" at 3.20.

I've also just remembered William Shatner's cover of Pulp's "Common People". Now there's something EVERYONE must hear at least once in their life.

That is hilarious! I already liked Joe Cocker's version (don't think I'd ever heard the Woodstock performance though), but those illustrations make it even better. :D

Joe Cocker's version will always be a television theme song to me, and I am therefore incapable of judging it on any artistic grounds.

I have that same bias too, actually.
I was bewildered when I ask my friends if they know the song "with a Little Help From My Friends" and they say "The Beatles song?".
Yes, I love the Beatles, but this should not be the first version that comes to their heads!!!

I know right. :(

I don't know what y'alls opinions on Radiohead are... But Panic! at the Disco seems to like them. Heres Karma Police.

Also, they kind of butcher Eleanor Rigby

Panic! seems to be a treasure trove of terrible covers. I really liked their first album, but covering anything they seem to ruin it.

The Radiohead cover was technically proficient, at least. A bit lacking in energy, almost completely in emotion (until the almost laughable "until you FUCK with us..."), and I find the guy's voice annoying, but I've heard far worse covers.

The Beatles cover, though, is pretty god-awful.

Portsmouth Sinfonia's cover of Sprach Zarathustra. Actually, that transcends bad, and becomes EPIC!

Actually no, their cover of In the hall of the mountain king is even worsebetter.

There was a wonderful epic song by british band Procol Harum called In held 'twas in I. I love it. In the late nineties, a group called Transatlantic (including amongst others a member of Dream Theater) made a cover of this song... awfully... putting all the spirit away. I could have simply ignore it, but everyone around me was bothering me with this "wonderful new song of the Dream Theater guy", ignoring that it was even a cover. Damn, I hate this cover, not only because it's lame, but also because it seems so appreciated.

And I love this song, too, particularly the Soft Cell version.

Off-topic, but I'm wondering. Why does there have to be a version of Youtube just for the UK? I mean, we speak the same language. And is uk.youtube the default for England?

I'm almost inclined to believe that this one diverges so far as to not be a cover anymore, merely a different song that happens to have the same lyrics.

Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb... technically a Pink Floyd cover, I guess.

I cannot remember who it was by, but in high school, our drill team was going to dance to a bunch of Beatles covers (as the high school band was playing a Beatles medley, which was actually quite good, as they actually had a bass player), and the music was beyond horrible. /Especially/ the cover of Come Together. It seems that most covers of that song tend to fail...

yes, Celine Dion covering AC/DC is the worst, for me.

But some covers are better than the original, if only slightly (see, All Along the Watchtowers) and some... well I like Johnny Cash more than Nine Inch Nails, so his version of hurt (and regardless of that, his version is better. also, he's dead. gotta give a dead man's last song props)
and hell...

well, so I couldn't find the original video of the actual musical doing the song Feeling Good (roar of the greasepaint - smell of the crowd, for those interested) but Muse's cover of it is way better a song.
uhhhh fuck.

Incidentally, this year's X-Factor winner in the UK is going to cover Hallelujah for their first single (and inevitable Christmas Number One) - I may be slightly jugmental here but that will probably become a contender for worst cover ever once released.

I'm inclined to say that New Order ruined their own songs, and that Frente! fixed "Bizarre Love Triangle" and made it beautiful. Orgy trimmed up "Blue Monday" and made it at least decent.

Speaking of Avril Lavigne covers, when taken the other way and Ben Gibbard covers "Complicated" it's enjoyable at least. Especially if you can find one where he starts off with this big speech about how this next song is really good, and that he has nothing to do with it, and at the end saying how the situation really isn't that complicated, the guys just not that into her.

As far as lousy covers go, Rammstein's cover of Depeche Mode's "Stripped" is a little grating, Marilyn Manson's "KKK Took my Baby Away" lacks any punch or whimsy.
I have nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.
And some old pictures.
