Music in the vein of...

Postby zacpol » Wed Nov 12, 2008 4:26 am UTC

I'm not sure if this has been done before or not, but I didn't find it in my forum search, so here it is.
This is a thread that's like the pandora of the forums, but with human input; you give a band or song or two, maybe a link to some of the music, and other people recommend a similar band you'd probably like.

Since I'm the first, I'm looking for a group similar to Devotchka and Beirut, because I'm really digging the american-inspired gypsy music at the moment.

If it's American-inspired balkans/gypsy music you're looking for, I'll point you towards A Hawk and a Handsaw:
If you'd like to make the jump into balkan music minus American-ness, then you can do no better than to check out the Kočani Orkestar.

This is probably a much harder ask, but I'd love to find some more bands like Dirty Projectors.
More than any genre similarity, what I guess I'm really looking for is the same fearless inventiveness with regard to melodies and harmonies, and the seamless way they integrate rock & pop hooks with avant-unknown strangeness.
Any ideas?

Rumpled Academic: Listening to this song, there's a chance that you might love Frog Eyes.
