I'm trying to put together a playlist for the cafe I work at and I'm kinda lost. Any suggestions?

Any genre goes and obviously no swearing violence etc. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Some of the happier, more upbeat songs by The Cure: Lovecats, Lullaby, Close to Me etc.
REM perhaps?
Instrumentals are good too.
Oooh! Try videogame music.

I think songs that people recognise would be best.

Putumayo is a record company that puts out a lot of compilation albums with all kinds of world music; lounge, blues, latin, celtic etc., a lot of which would probably be ideal for a café. Albums like Music From the Coffee Lands or Latin Lounge might fit your needs, but you should definitely try and sift through some of their stuff.

Try Crimewave by Crystal Castles. Maybe some other softer songs by them too, actually.

But seriously, Buckethead's ambient album Colma or maybe some Sigur Rós?

I don't know why, but the Amelie soundtrack in bookstores or cafes always makes me happy.

Stereolab. Lots of stuff from Dots and Loops qualify, in my opinion.
Volcano, by Damien Rice, is good too.
Maybe some Coldplay tunes, like Don't Panic.

Step 1.) Go read Questionable Content.

Step 2.) Write down every band name mentioned in the strip.

Step 3.) Make a collection of the music from said bands.

Step 4.) Play at your cafe.

Step 5.) ???

Step 6.) Profit!

Could you have "metal hour" or "rock hour" something? So people know what to expect when they come in.
