Cute/Romantic Lyrics (no genre discrimination!)

Postby Mysfaktor » Sat Nov 22, 2008 12:49 am UTC

I am just a cowboy lonesome on the trail. Lord, I'm just thinking about a certain female... And simultaneously, I found that my music library had a way too low percentage of songs with lyrics that are (you guessed it) cute and romantic.

Currently, some Newton Faulkner and Black Stone Cherry is being played quite alot, but it seemed like a good idea (at 1:40 AM) to make a thread for suggestions - you can never have too much music to choose from!

It's a thread for everyone, so every genre is welcome! Only important thing is the lyrics. :)

I don't know if Unravel, by Björk, fits your notion of cute and/or romantic, but I personally think it's amazingly touching. I relate to it on every level.

There's also Green Eyes, by Coldplay (though it has the eye colour problem, but you can mentally adapt it to your liking).

Don't care what i think, post what you think fits!

Also, I can't believe I forgot to mention Coldplay. We need them in this thread. A great addition.

I know there's plenty more in my library, so I'll post that at some point, but the one that always comes to mind first is a single line from Switching Off, by Elbow:

"You're the only sense the world has ever made."

The Stone Roses - Tightrope

You should've been an angel, it would've suited you
My gold-leaf triptyic angel, she knows just what to do
In the half-light of morning, in a world between the sheets,
I swear I saw her angel wing, my vision was complete

60% of the songs by The Beatles. Also Matte Kudasai by King Crimson. The lyrics themselves aren't very romantic, but in the context of the song they are.

Still by the window pane
Pain like the rain that’s falling
She waits in the air
Matte kudasai
She sleeps in a chair
In her sad america
When was a night so long
Long like the notes I’m sending
She waits in the air
Matte kudasai
She sleeps in a chair
In her sad america

The 'romance' in Beatles songs amuse me to no end. "She's in love with me and I feel fine". I mean, not absolutely in the clouds, smiling from ear to ear and wandering like an idiot through the streets because you just found the love of your life. Just oh, yeah, she loves me. Cool. So, think it's gonna rain?

"Every little thing she does, she does for me!" Because, hey, isn't it cool that I have a lover that has no life of her own whatsoever? She wouldn't brush her teeth in the morning if it wasn't for my own personal benefit.

Aye, it be funny. But I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously, I mean, it's 60's pop after all.

Johnny Cash but possibly someone else first wrote:The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the night and the empty skies my love
To the night and the empty skies

The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth turn in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command my love
That was there at my command

The first time ever I lay with you
And felt your heart beat close to mine
I thought our joy would fill the earth
And would last 'till the end of time my love
And would last 'till the end of time

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars were the gifts you gave
To the night and the empty skies my love
To the night and the empty skies

and ... holy shit, what is up with lyric websites making all their posted lyrics non-selectable text?!

True. Matter of fact, I think it's safe to say now that Lennon was so pissed off with writing that kind of lyric that he hoped they wouldn't take it at all. I Am the Walrus should have come as no surprise, after all that.

My favourite dumbly charming romantic song, hands down, would have to be "The Luckiest Guy On The Lower-East Side", by the Magnetic Fields.

"andy would bicycle across town
in the rain to bring you candy
and john would buy the gown
for you to wear to the prom
with tom, the astronomer
who would name a star for you
but I'm the luckiest guy
on the lower east side
'coz I got wheels
and you want to go for a ride

harry is the one I think you'll marry
but it's chris that you kissed after school
well I'm a fool
there's no doubt
but when the sun comes out
and only when the sun comes out
I'm the luckiest guy
on the lower east side
cuz I've got wheels
and you want to go for a ride
the day is beautiful and so are you
my car is ugly but then, I'm ugly too
I know you'd never give me a second glance
when the weathers nice all the other guys
don't stand a chance
I know professor blumen
makes you feel like a woman
but when the wind is in your hair you laugh like a little girl
so you share secrets with lou
but we've got secrets too
well one, I only keep this heap for you
'coz I'm the ugliest guy on the lower east side!
but I've got wheels
- and you want to go for a ride."

In other news, "Something" and "If I Needed Someone" are among the sweetest love lyrics in the English language, and the Beatles have many more of the like. Also, "when I touch you I feel happy inside" is impossible to argue against.

Aye, it be funny. But I don't think it's meant to be taken too seriously, I mean, it's 60's pop after all.

Okay, but so is Pet Sounds.

Yeah, I guess not... because feeling happy outside must be a pretty bizarre experience, especially for one who doesn't believe in out-of-body experiences and such. :)

Tim Buckley's - She Is
The Tea Party - These Living Arms
Abney Park - She
Abney Park - Love

I'm having a bit of trouble - I keep thinking of songs that I think are sweetly romantic, but they're all about lost love, unrequited love, dead lovers, ...

In response to the Beatles, I was watching Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and the opinion about the Beatles there stuck.

This is the scene.

"This," he says. "This is why The Beatles got it."

"I'm afraid I'm not following..."

"Other bands, it's about sex. Or pain. Or some fantasy. But The Beatles, they knew what they were doing. You know the reason The Beatles made it so big?"

"What?"

"'I Wanna Hold Your Hand.' First single. *beep* brilliant. Perhaps the most *beep* brilliant song ever written. Because they nailed it. That's what everyone wants. Not 24/7 hot wet sex. Not a marriage that lasts a hundred years. Not a Porsche or a ******** or a million-dollar crib. No. They wanna hold your hand. They have such a feeling that they can't hide. Every single successful song of the past fifty years can be traced back to 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand.' And every single successful love story has those unbearable and unbearably exciting moments of hand-holding. Trust me. I've thought a lot about this."

Wait, what? Wasn't that their, what, fifth or sixth single? And wasn't one of their first hits Please Please Me, which was a completely childish innuendo for oral sex? And wasn't their first LP opened with "one, two, three, fuck!!"? And wasn't that same I Wanna Hold Your Hand witten solely to be a hit specifically in the U.S.? And wasn't their second LP closed with the cover of a song that says "Your loving gives me thrills / But your loving don't pay my bills"?

Really, it's all a put on. It's just good music.

The Magnetic Field's 69 Songs is pretty awesome. I'm just a real sucker for those "dumbly charming romantic songs" that are totally cute and lame at the same time. The Moldy Peaches also hits that spot.

"Nothing Came Out" - The Moldy Peaches

Just because i don't say anything,
Doesn't mean i don't like you.
I open my mouth and i try and i try.
but no words came out.

Without 40 oz. of social skills,
i'm just an ass in the crack of humanity.
i'm just a huge manatee.
a huge manatee.

And besides your probably holding hands
with some skinny, pretty girl that likes to
talk about bands.
and all i wanna do is ride bikes with you.
and stay up late and watch cartoons.

...Ducktails, shirt tails, tail spin, sailor moon, GI Joe, robotek

i wanna watch cartons with you.
Jossie and the pussy cats and scooby doo,
i want you to watch cartoons with me.

he-man, voltron and hong kong 3
i tried to ask you to your face
but no words came out.
put on my hood and walked away,
that doesn't mean i don't like you,
and besides your probably holding hands
with some skinny, pretty girl that likes to
talk about bands.
and all i wanna do is ride bikes with you.
and stay up late and maybe spoon.

Just because i don't say anything
doesn't mean i don't like you.
..no..
i opened my mouth and i tried and i tried.
and besides your probably holding hands
with some skinny, pretty girl that likes to
talk about bands.
and all i wanna do is ride bikes with you.
and stay up late and watch cartoons.

This may not be love that I feel, but I know it's more than like a lot. Oh, it's more than like a lot.

One and a half out of three ain't bad by The Amazing Joel Hockey Movement. Best sung at the top of your lungs in your most off-key voice.

How about 'Your Song' by Elton John? A bit cheesy perhaps, but I actually quite like it - it's kind of understated, as if to say "this is a love song, but I'm not going to shout about it" :D I prefer the original to the Moulin Rouge version, although I do quite like the arrangement it's very big and over-blown.

There's a song called 'Beautiful in my Eyes' by Joshua Kadison which you might find a little vomit-inducing.

My favourite love song though is probably Gorecki by Lamb. Beautiful song, beautiful lyrics. Also check out their song "Gabriel", another great tune.

This must be good because it makes me want to gag for even having copied it =P

I have a smile stretched from ear to ear
I see you walking down the road
We meet at the lights, I stare for a while
The world around us disappears
It's just you and me on my island of hope
A breath between us could be miles
Let me surround you, a sea to your shore
Let me be the calm you seek

But everytime I'm close to you
There's too much I can't say
And you just walk away

And I forgot to tell you
I love you
And night's too long
And cold here
Without you
I grieve in my condition
For I cannot find the words to say
I need you so

or the way better (slightly less romantic) mix I have: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPDUQnaabf4
edit: actually the version on youtube is kinda bad, better to download it off BT's Rare and Remixed CD2 <<
