It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Ranking: Best Songs Ever

Postby greeniguana00 » Sat Nov 29, 2008 9:24 pm UTC

Ok, so here's the deal: we are going to compile a list of the best songs ever, one song at a time. Of course this is something very subjective, so I have devised a system to make it as fair as possible:

a) Post the name of one song with an artist in this format:
Add Name of Song - Band Name

This song will then be added to the list.

b) Include one ranking shift in this format:
[+] Name of Song - Band Name
or
[-] Name of Song - Band Name

The first will increase the rating of a song, the second will decrease it.

c) You may not make consecutive posts. You may only post again after someone else has posted.

So, an example post would look something like this:

Add Mr Blue Sky - ELO
[+] Mr Blue Sky - ELO

Notice how I can both add a new song and change the ranking of an existing song both at the same time? You can do one or the other or both at the same time, and they can be for different songs, but you can not do more than one of one at the same time.

Here is the list (with ratings in parentheses):

Have fun! I will update the list daily. Assuming no one deletes or edits his/her posts, it should be possible to verify at any point that the list is correct! Yay! :D

Add Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel

I don't really understand what this achieves, but sure:

[+] Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel

Re: Ranking: Best Songs Ever

(doesn't apply to current ranking system)

Spoiler:
As of your post, the list became:
1. Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel
2. Mr Blue Sky - ELO

If you hadn't increased the ranking of Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2, the list would have looked like this:
1. Mr Blue Sky - ELO
2. Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel

Now, the importance of this comes in when the list grows longer and you want a song to move higher up on the list. You can increase/decrease the rank of another song besides the one you add, or even increase/decrease the rank of a song already on the list without adding another song.

So now:

Add Catch the Wind - Donovan
[+] Mr Blue Sky - ELO

Spoiler:
The list has now changed to:

1. Mr Blue Sky - ELO
2. Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel
3. Catch the Wind - Donovan

See?

mmm.... I'm writing a quick javascript program right now so that updating the list isn't so difficult. Of course it doesn't help that I've done no programming whatsoever in about a year. :?

By the way, thanks Immortal_z for updating the list.

Spoiler:
As far as the suggestions, I do think that as the list grows longer, the number of ranking changes that can be made per post should increase. For now, let's increase it to two, effective.... now! From this point on, every multiple of 15 songs increases the number of ranking shifts per post by 1. So, at any given time, the number of ranking shifts you can do will be determined by 1 + [(# Songs)/15] always rounded down. Does this sound good?

(not doing this idea anymore)

It's not really very fair because songs that are added first are automatically higher on the list than songs added later. So to make Mr. Blue Sky the #1 song, only a couple people would have to vote for it, whereas you'd have to have around 20 people vote to get "Piano Man" into the top spot.

A less skewed method might have been to compile a list of all the songs posted in one of the other best-song-ever threads ("Your Favorite Song Ever" and "Battle to find the Best Song Ever") and then have a regular-style vote on those.

Okay, I have written that javascript program. It doesn't seem to be working 100% correctly however. I still need some time to work out the bugs.

Code: Select all

<html>
<head>
<title>List Compiler</title>

<script type="text/javascript">
var songs = new Array();
var num_songs = 1;
function add(songname) {
   num_songs++;
   songs[num_songs-1] = songname;
}
function move_up(songname) {
   var i;
   for (i=1;i<num_songs;i++) {
      if (songname == songs[i]) {
         songs[i] = songs[i-1];
         songs[i-1] = songname;
      }
   }
}
function move_down(songname) {
   var i;
   for (i=0;i<(num_songs-1);i++) {
      if (songname == songs[i]) {
         songs[i] = songs[i+1];
         songs[i+1] = songname;
      }
   }
}
var lines = new Array();
var funcs = new Array();
function read(start, end) {
   var output = "";
   var i = start;
   while (i <= end) {
      output = output + document.getElementById("input").value[i];
      i++;
   }
   return output;
}
function fill() {
   var i = 0;
   var j = 0;
   var k = 0;
   var txt = document.getElementById("input").value;
   while (i < txt.length) {
      if (txt[i] == "\n") {
         lines[k] = read(j+3,i-1);
         if ((read(j,j+2) == "add") || (read(j,j+2) == "Add") || (read(j,j+2) == "ADD")) {funcs[k]=1;}
         if (read(j,j+2) == "[+]") {funcs[k]=2;}
         if (read(j,j+2) == "[-]") {funcs[k]=3;}
         k++;
         j = i+1;
      }
      i++;
   }
   var num_lines = k+1;
   k = 0;
   while (k < num_lines) {
      if (funcs[k] == 1) {add(lines[k]);}
      if (funcs[k] == 2) {move_up(lines[k]);}
      if (funcs[k] == 3) {move_down(lines[k]);}
      k++;
   }
   k = 0;
   while (k < num_songs) {
      document.getElementById("output").value = document.getElementById("output").value + (k+1) + "." + songs[k] + "\n";
      k++;
   }
}
</script>

</head>
<body>
Input:
<textarea id="input" cols="65" rows="20"></textarea>
Output:
<textarea id="output" cols="65" rows="20"></textarea>
<input type="button" value="compile" onClick="fill()"></input>
</body>
</html>

Just copy and paste this into notepad and save as "compiler.html" if you want to run it.

Then paste a list like this:

Code: Select all

into the input and hit "compile". Make sure you hit enter after the last entry, or it will not be accounted for.

Right now, it produces this:

Code: Select all

2. Missed the Boat - Modest Mouse
3. Two-Headed Boy, Pt. 2 - Neutral Milk Hotel
4.undefined
5. Your Hand In Mine - Explosions In The Sky
6. Nobody Moves - We Are Scientists
7. Dashboard - Modest Mouse
8. Teen Angst-M83
9. Invincible - Muse
10. Lithium - Nirvana
11. Eat the Rich - Aerosmith
12. Catch the Wind - Donovan
13. Hey Jude - The Beatles
14. When One Eight Becomes Two Zeros - Glassjaw
15. Another Brick In the Wall (Part 2) - Pink Floyd
16. Psycho Killer - The Talking Heads
17. Summertime Blues (Live) - The Who
18. Piano Man - Billy Joel
19. We Didn't Start the Fire - Billy Joel
20. Cool/Cough by The Misfits
21. Show Me How to Live - Audioslave
22. Butterflies and Hurricanes-Muse
23. Here I Go Again - Whitesnake

(this is based off not recent info)

It does not seem to fit Immortal_z's compiled list at that point, so something must be wrong.

I don't know where that "undefined" comes from, so I'll need to look into it. The names of the songs need to be EXACTLY THE SAME and it is CASE SENSITIVE as is. I'll fix this soon.
Goodnight, g♥♥dnight! There's something magnificent about good night with two disemboweled hearts in it, or at least it seems that way when you're so happy.

Re: Voting Experiment - Can We Vote for the Best Song Ever?

It really is unfair; Hey Jude would roughly be in the top 3 if not for the bizarre system. Using points would be much more effective in judging popularity; that is, [+] increasing the song's value by 1, and [-] decreasing it equivocally. The current system, as previously stated, gives songs that were added later in the thread exponentially less priority.

..hm, shit, and here I thought the thing was a point system, with the numbers being assigned in alphabetical order or something similar... as that's the only sensible way of doing it. Starting a song at 0, and adding or subtracting as it goes along.
