Favorite Song
I didn't see anything like this up so I thought, why not.
What is you favorite song (either currently, or timeless, or maybe both)
and why?
I'll start:
currently, Radio by Alkaline Trio is my favorite song
I like it because it's so simple, such a simple meaning. Yet at the first listen, you might not get it. I was hardly even paying attention to the lyrics and then I finally realized what they were talking about. It's just very catchy and amusing to see people's reactions when they figure out the real meaning.

Re: Favorite Song
Probably The Spirit Carries On by Dream Theater. It's so uplifting and when the second part of the song starts after the buildup using the same lyrics as the opening song, that's like one of my favorite parts of any song.

The Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton by The Mountain Goats. The lyrics mean so much to me.
When I was younger (pre-tMG), it was Jumper by Third Eye Blind.

Re: Favorite Song
Burden - Opeth
This song is fucking amazing. It gives me goosebumps most of the time. The solos are incredible, especially the organ solo in the middle. And the proggy singing and shit.
Gah. It makes me not be able to speak well.

Re: Favorite Song
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. It was on the radio this morning and I've been pumped up all day.
Re: Favorite Song
My previous favorite ("Volcano" by Jimmy Buffett) was recently ousted by "For Crying Out Loud," written by Jim Steinman and performed by Meat Loaf. Beautiful lyrics over fantastic instrumentation. Epic, emotional, and soaring. The one-take vocal performance is simply astonishing. The songwriter's favorite song, it's about loving someone because they're not afraid to cry. Plus, it was one of the first-ever power ballads. Legend has it that after a live performance of this song in 1978, audience member Billy Joel climbed onto a table to applaud. It wouldn't be performed again live until 2004. Despite its lack of mainstream exposure, it's a magnificent, breathtaking song.

For the longest time, it was Homecoming by Green Day (and holds the all-time spot for number 2), as it means quite a lot to myself. Currently, however, and for quite a while now, it is Missed the Boat by Modest Mouse, which is just an amazing, peaceful, calm song.

The de-tuning effect at the end is interesting. It's a great song by them, though I think my favorite song by Opeth is Reverie/Harlequin Forest for some reason.
Anyway, my favorite song at the moment is.... Quutamo by Apocalyptica. Shut up shut up, I like some of their music.

You know, I also find that, for some reason, I'm much more fond of that song than any other on the album. I'm not sure why. I think it might be something about the atmosphere. I don't know, it's just terrific.
Oh, and my favorite song is probably still Latalerus. I mean, damn.
Also, Trains, Anesthetize, Blackwater Park, Harvest, and Black Rose Immortal come close. And Not Unlike the Waves. I have trouble picking just one.

Trains is beautiful. I love the version off the live dvd. The album one sounded a little boring in comparison last time i put it on.
I -love- the middle section of Anesthetize but I felt the other sections, while good, prevent it from being one of my favourite songs ever.
Still with Porcupine Tree, but I think Waiting is one of my favourites.
Another song which really appealed to me is Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. I like the original Elton John song, and also the Dream Theater cover was excellent, too.

Yuuuum, Opeth and Porcupine Tree.
By the way, I added you on last.fm.
Re: Favorite Song
My favourite song at the moment would be 'First Day Of My Life' by Bright Eyes. It's amazing! I am also loving 'untitled 01' by Brand New.

That you did. And a friend of mine, even.

You know, I can totally see that. I am much more fond of the album version, however.
In all fairness, a 19(ish) minute song can hardly be expected to be excellent in every movement. Mr. Wilson, I think, has done quite well regardless.
Re: Favorite Song
I never really have a certain solid favorite song. Right now it's probably Drive by the Gaslight Anthem or Plane Vs. Tank Vs. Submarine by Tigers Jaw.

Heh, I had to look up the lyrics, but I can say that I did not think of that when I first heard it.
My favorite: Kashmir by Led Zeppelin. I am only beginning to discover how awesome that whole genre of music is, in the words of: http://xkcd.com/339/. But the lyrics and the melody of that song - so amazing.
Re: Favorite Song
I don't know if I could choose an all time favorite, but the top two would have to be.
Blink 182 - Damnit
Rise Against - Like The Angel
Both of these songs and bands I've loved forever and couldn't really pick.

Re: Favorite Song
I think i'd have to distinguish between favourite song and song that I just damn well respect.
Overall, I'd have to say that The Great Gig in the Sky by Floyd is the best damn musical piece written. Ever. However, Due to many years of overlistening, it wouldn't be my first pick, and honestly my favourite song varies with mood and time. Right now ummmm...
Jeez i'd have to distinguish between prog rock/metal and post/ambient even. That's a hard q.
Post/ambient - Your Hand in Mine (Explosions)/Viorar vel til Loftarasa (Sigur Ros). There's sooo many others, but these one just takes the cake.
Prog rock/metal - Tie between Iter Impius (Pain of Salvation) and Russia on Ice (Porcupine Tree)... once again massively big competition.
I think overall, there's a slight tend towards Viorar vel til Loftarasa... such a brilliant piece.
And I think maybe I should just finish this post up now.

It's hard to pick, but possibly Simple Man by Lynyrd Skynyrd.
It's just a good song, I love the sound to it, and it's lyrics remind me that there's more to life than we often times remember in the hustle and bustle.

I have none, but I've known someone who mentioned The Nile's Edge by VAST as a favorite. An exellent song from a great album.
Some possible picks for myself off the top of my head:
Dream Theater - Take The Time, or Octavarium
Failure - Undone
Allan Holdsworth - Tullio

This and Surrounded by same artist. Dream Theater has no bad or even decent songs, they're all fabulous.

Can't... choose... argh!
There's so many! Currently I'm hooked to Shield by Deep Purple and Closure by Opeth. I don't know but it feels like something stirs inside my mind when I listen to those songs. Yay for music!

Never really had a favorite song until I heard Achilles Last Stand by Led Zeppelin. I feel like it's far too underrated even by Led fans.

Great voice, and so catchy. It's a cover of an old French song, but with English lyrics that are far more brilliant. I first heard it in the credits of the film Death Proof.
