Mix CDs, Playlist and Mixtapes

Postby hopesdead » Wed Jan 13, 2010 2:55 am UTC

I consider this to be an art so if any mod wants to move this thread to the music section then please do if you feel this doesn't belong here. Yes, it does belong here in Music. Moved. -L I know there is a thread on sending mixes to other members but people can just post the track listings if they don't want to send a copy to someone.

If you make mix CDs, playlist or mixtapes please feel free to post your track listing. People have compared me to Alexandra Patsavas (a music supervisor famous for he work on The OC, Roswell High, Twilight and Gossip Girl; my favorite tv show is The OC).

I'm working on a mix CD for a couple of coworkers who are into world music. I haven't worked out the song order yet, and I might have room for something else still. If I had more non-African stuff, I'd add that...

Mali Music (a compilation CD featuring Afel Bocoum and Damon Albarn) - Makelekele
Mali Music - Nabintou Diakite (the title is the same as the name of the singer)
Hossam Ramzy - Kholkhal Taheyya
Bulgarian Women's Choir - Erghen Diado
Bulgarian Women's Choir - Polegnala E Todora
Talvin Singh - See Breeze
Asian Dub Foundation (as found on DJ Cheb i Sabbah's album "As Far As") - Colour Line
The Music of Mali (compilation CD) - Kun Fe Ko by Oumou Sangare
The Music of Mali - Tekere by Salif Keita
Nahawa Doumbia - Laban Ko
DJ Cheb i Sabbah, compilation album called "Krishna Lila" - Rupa Tujhe Deva by Radhika et al
Nyasaland, field recordings from southern and central Malawi during the 1950s - Ine Ndidandaula (Cewa region)
Nyasaland - Amalume (Cewa)
Nyasaland - Mungabe (also Cewa, maybe I should maybe pick something from another region)
Thai Elephant Orchestra (yes, actual elephants playing Thai-style instruments) - Heavy Logs
Spindel - Vrikkjaren
Manu Dibango - Soul Makossa
A man who is 'ill-adjusted' to the world is always on the verge of finding himself. One who is adjusted to the world never finds himself, but gets to be a cabinet minister.

The only playlist I've really got that I like is an obscenely long (but still thematically coherent and internally dynamic, at least I hope so) one which is based around songs that have the same sort of ethic or tone behind them as post-rock, but aren't post-rock. It was also a bit of an exercise in seeing how many genres I could put together without anything sound out-of-place, since the genres vary quite a bit here but I feel the songs are all more similar than they are different.

Weighing in at a whopping 03:25:55 (and it's meant to be emotionally exasperating, in some senses, and for long night-time drives, so I don't see that as a bad thing), Post Rock Sans Post Rock
1. We Invent You - Unwound (5:52)
2. Washer - Slint (8:50)
3. October All Over - Unwound (4:59)
4. Seas Too Far To Reach - Okkervil River (5:02)
5. Reckless Burning - Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter (6:54)
6. Collapsing - Funeral Diner (5:58)
7. Terminus - Unwound (9:40)
8. Faiblesse des sens - Amesoeurs (5:02)
9. Song About An Angel - Sunny Day Real Estate (6:14)
10. In A Factory - Verse En Coma (5:27)
11. And You're Wondering How A Top Floor Could Replace Heaven - City of Caterpillar (8:33)
12. Interview at the Ruins - Circle Takes the Square (5:10)
13. Jane Doe - Converge (11:34)
14. I Don't Love - Have A Nice Life (6:07)
15. Soon It Will Be Fire - Richard Youngs (9:22)
16. To Bid You Farewell - Opeth (10:54)
17. Dead As Dreams - Weakling (20:39)
18. Lullaby - Low (9:51)
19. The Diamond Sea - Sonic Youth (19:36)
20. Second Best - Pedro the Lion (6:00)
21. Trailer Trash - Modest Mouse (5:50)
22. I See A Darkness - Bonnie "Prince" Billy (4:50)
23. My Suicide - The Angels of Light (5:41)
24. So Come Back, I Am Waiting - Okkervil River (8:03)
25. Good Morning, Captain - Slint (7:39)
26. After Hours - The Velvet Underground (2:08) (This doesn't really fit the theme except it's the most perfect way to end just about any collection of music, and I felt it needed to end on something light)

I've got a whole website of mixes. Most recently I made one for snow- I've never really been around it much, and England had something of a cold period recently - spending most of my time inside watching the snow fall inspired me to make a soundtrack.

Hauschka - Ginsterweg (from Snowflakes and Car Wrecks)
Inch Time - Icicles and Snowflakes
Ezekial Honig - Fractures and Fissures
Robin Saville - Snow Jewel
Tenniscoats - Aurora Curtains
The Necks - Drive By
Harold Budd - As Long As I Can Hold My Breath
Fluxion - Atlos
Carl Craig - Es. 30
Vainqueur - Elevation
Indio - Snowdrifts

I've got a few playlists on my mp3 player. Just recently programmed one more. Plan to do more as time allows.

Beatlemania - should be self-explanatory. Has a lot of songs by The Beatles, along with songs from individual members after they broke up.

99X - named after a radio station I used to listen to. The station is still around, but they're not the same as it was when I listened to it, in my teen years. Artists in this playlist include Talking Heads, Alanis Morrissette, Natalie Merchant, Green Day, 10,000 Maniacs, The Cranberries, Indigo Girls, Deep Forest, and several others.

Z93 - like 99X, this time with only classic rock. Pink Floyd, The Eagles, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, and others.

Silliness - Silly/insane songs. Weird Al, Spike Jones, Tom Lehrer, Stan Freberg, Allan Sherman, and some TMBG thrown in to balance it out.

EPIC - Epic instrumental pieces. John Williams goes without saying. Also got a few classical pieces that are some epic shit, like In The Hall of the Mountain King, Ride of the Valkyries, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Night on Bald Mountain, and some other awesomeness.

An important message for you:

Some friends of mine have started a Playlist Challenge group. We take turns picking a theme and a number of songs. Such as these eleven songs on "The Future" or these nine songs on "European Cities."
I've also been making mix tapes since they were on tape.

Edit: I'm also pretty proud of these seven on "Desirable." Currently working on an eleven song list on the theme "Epiphany."
I have nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion.
And some old pictures.
