Help me pick my band name!

Postby Vicare » Tue Jan 26, 2010 9:56 pm UTC

On Friday, I signed up for my high school's battle of the bands, with no band to speak of. I then spoke to my guitarist brother, who called up a drummer he knew, and the next day we had our first practice in his in-home studio. I had a band name, The Living Daylights, but I kind of stopped liking that name, so I'm in search of a new one. Band names are generally arbitrary and sound stupid until they become associated with the band, but if it helps, here's the current set list for the battle of the bands (which is two months off) to kind of show you our style.

Bleed It Out-Linkin Park
Walk This Way-Aerosmith (original version)
Ocean Avenue-Yellowcard
Around The World-Red Hot Chili Peppers
What I've Done-Linkin Park
I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing-Aerosmith
(if we master it in time) Foreplay/Long Time-Boston
Plus two songs we wrote(at least)
GENERATION 2: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and subtract 1 from the generation. Social experiment.

It might be better if you mentioned some names you already like and are deciding between. It's pretty easy to come up with good band names (Dave Barry always had jokes about that), but you really want something the band members can attach to personally.

If you're more looking for ways to come up with ideas, here are a few brainstorming suggestions (OK, with some examples):
  • Video games have words and jargon that sounds interesting out of context: Ubersaw, Catsplosion, The Leavers
  • Other pop culture references (you've got one already)
  • Weird signs/names you see (is this how Wilco got their name?)
  • Current references - they don't have to make sense for long if you're not planning on sustaining the band after the show
  • Start from random words and quotes (lots of websites for this)
The answer to the question "What’s wrong with the world?" is just two words: "I am." -- G. K. Chesterton (attributed)

Look, We Have Nipples

Also, you should stick at #xkcd for a while. Someone who's called Bucket often points out if there's a good band name floating in the air.

I hate to reference another webcomic, for fear of being lynched, but...

There's a webcomic named "Suicide for Hire" which has tons of these as a running joke.

For actual band names though, I'm partial to Elegant Idiocy for a punk-rock band.

I dunno, the set-list isn't really punk rock. Linkin Park's early stuff is heavier than punk rock, but also lighter. It's like if pop-punk and hardcore had a child. Popcore? What I've Done is more alternative rock, leaning more towards the rock. Aerosmith and Boston are both classic rock, but that's just a staple of bands nowadays, so that shouldn't influence the name. Yellowcard is definitely pop-punk, especially Ocean Avenue.

I've got an idea for a band name that I'd like to use, so no stealing it, but this is just to give you some more ideas to work from. I'm trying to get a band together and we're going to be called That One Band, with our first album being That One Album, just so when (read: really big "if") people talk about us it'll be something like:
"Hey, have you heard That One Album from That One Band? It's so great!"
"Oh frickin' yes! They're coming here in concert!"
"Sweet! Let's get tickets to see That One Band!"

I'd suggest you choose something that somehow is meaningful, either to you, or just is deep. For example, there's a quote from Watchmen where Dr. Manhattan says "We're all puppets, Laurie. I'm just a puppet who can see the strings." So See The Strings could work. Sticking with the Watchmen theme (I dunno why, I was just looking through quotes) A Comedian Died.

There are some local bands around here with names like Atl Atl (as in the ancient spear-throwing weapon), Goodnight Annabelle, The Empirates, The Ramptons, The Dockets... The list goes on. You can even make up a word ("Empirates" being a conglomerate of "Empire" and "Pirates").
But I, being poor, have only my dreams. I have spread my dreams under your feet; tread softly, because you tread on my dreams.

Math/science terms, historical events/figures, and music theory terminology all make for pretty cool band names.
For example: Pascal and the Triangles, Boxer Rebellion, The Chromatic Movement.

what about titles related to what you do. make sound or noise like:

Sound overflow (for a heavy band maybe)
Airwave (which esentially is what sound is)

The two bands I really want to start are called Flying fortress and dirty pictures. Can I interest you in either name?

Capslock (as in shouting, as in loud music)
Tabulator (tabs as in music tabs)
Pickup (guitar pickup)

Ever since reading the phrase in a science article, I've liked the randomness of "Total Carbon Pie". It might be a better instrumental song title rather than a band name, though.

I've always wanted to be in a band called Self-Titled. The first album could be, in all ways, self-titled; the follow-up could be titled Eponymous.
The position being taken is not to be mistaken for attempted education or righteous accusation. Only a description, just an observation on the pitiful condition of our degeneration.
