Identifying a Commonality?

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Identifying a Commonality?

Postby 4dhayman » Fri Aug 13, 2010 11:31 pm UTC

I have found that a few notes in some songs have a quality I really like. I know nothing about music theory, or how to play an instrument. However, I think that the bits of songs I am linking to below have something in common. Perhaps someone in this forum will hear it as I do.

Of course, it could just be that I like these parts, and that they have no connection!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tj2MBLsAVbY, just after 1:38, when the singer says "...the same..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5hGDPIoXbc&feature=related, just after 1:56, "...we're crippled and we're dazed...."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zM1HiGuVWsw&feature=related, just after 1:43, 5 notes "jump out" of the melody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=et5ZIBod3Og&feature=related, this song is full of these moments, but there is one after 0:27

Thanks in advance.

Hm. Knowing music theory and how to play an instrument to at least some degree. The only thing I found in common in all the examples you gave is that at the places you point, something changes, or the melody is embellished, or does something slightly unexpected. I don't know what else to say, it's the sort of indescribable thing that makes music exciting and awesome.

I'm pretty well versed in theory so I thought I could help, but I can't seem to identify what you found similar between them. I recognized a motif between the first two, but that's it.

Thanks for your help. I guess they don't have deeper common features. All are just great songs.
