Kanye(sus Christ)'s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

Postby picnic_crossfire » Thu Nov 18, 2010 5:49 am UTC

Drops in a few days. From what I've heard thus far, Kanye is at his very best. Just... THIS. Watch it when you have forty minutes to spare. Additionally, Kanye sampled Bon Iver, a band which I absolutely adore.
Thoughts?

I have never considered myself a Kanye fan at all. I think he's a bit of a doucher, and was never really that impressed by his music (I'm not impressed by most hip-hop, though).

Until this album came along and forced me to reevaluate my opinion of him, that is. Maybe my tastes have changed since I was first introduced to Kanye and something now just "clicks", but this album is damn near perfect. It's just simply, undeniably fantastic. Probably going to end up being one of the best hip-hop albums of the decade, definitely of the year. Every aspect of it is pompous and overblown and ridiculous, but it doesn't matter because it works so well. It's just dripping with tasteful, effective moments. Completely random vocoded "Iron Man" interludes and samples of 21st Century Schizoid Man thrown into the middle of songs for no reason should not be so effective.

Dark Fantasy, Gorgeous, Power, Runaway, and Lost in the World are especially fantastic.

I agree completely. I've never, ever felt anything close to the way I do now about any hip hop album.

I never would have thought that I'd enjoy a song with the lyrics, "Pop it, pop it, nigga just stop it/everybody knows I'm a mothafuckin monster/Ima need to see your fucking hands at the concert". But I do. It's kind of bizarre and frightening.

Hmmm. I may have to see if my music snob friend likes this and then I shall try it. I'm pretty picky with hip hop/pop music so I use him as a filter. My favorite hip hop song is a DMX vs Ghostbusters remix. But it feels weird hearing nigga in a song when I disagree with using the word.

Pitchfork gave the album a 10.

Goddamn they're pricks. Runaway is a bad song, and--quite critically--Kanye can't sing very well, his aforementioned flow and rhymes are amateur...but he does produce like a genius. I want him to exclusively produce.

Common's Be was produced by Kanye, and it's a monster. Common has a great flow (and how have I never seen this video before? It's got Avon Barksdale in it!).

I'm going to have to hear this album. I've always liked Jesus Walks.

I've come to accept that my enjoyment of someone's art should be separated from whether or not I like the artist as a person.

So many of these folks are raging pricks and to exclude any and all work created by douchebags would require limiting yourself to a mere handful of creators.

Kanye is a douchebag, an asshole, a scumbag and a jerkoff.

But this album is fantastic. I'm not a huge hip-hop guy. Oh I grab some of the hit singles and such, and my workout mix has a heavy sprinkling of Jay Z and DMX, but I never just sit down and listen to a hip-hop album straight through.

I've listened to Fantasy all the way through 5+ times since I grabbed it a couple days ago. I don't know what it is. It's so ridiculously over the top. Sampling King Crimson, really? But it just works.

It's a great album, but I'm not sure about best hip hop album of the year. I've been listening to Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty pretty regularly since it came out and I'm still not sick of it. I'll have to give this one more time to see if it has the same sort of lasting appeal.

I don't like Kanye's singing in most of the parts he was singing, but that was still very impressive.

The only Bon Iver song I know (and like) is the one he sampled. Woods. That made me happy.

I was a bit skeptical about it when I saw the 10 rating on Pitchfork and near perfect reviews everywhere else.

But then I listened to it.

Then I listened to it again.

And again.

And again, and again, and again, and again, and again....

I think I'm addicted ;_;

Finally listened to this. IMO:
-Better than the last album
-Not all the songs blew me away, but pretty good for pop music
-Couple of songs I genuinely like - Monster and Devil In A New Dress

God, I can't stand Kanye. Perhaps it's wrong to judge the artist and the work as one, but he is just not good enough for how much he sucks his own dick. Like seriously, I don't know how the man goes anywhere, considering every time he catches a glimpse of himself in a mirror, he masturbates himself into a coma.

Also, fuck him for sampling King Crimson. The only reason I'd listen to his music on purpose is if I was fatally poisoned and the cure was in the lyrics; even then, it'd be a best-of-three coin flip.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't respect him as an artist or as an indivIMMA LETCHU FINISH

His sampling King Crimson is one of the best things about him. That and having Portishead as a major influence on Late Registration. He tries things which nobody else would think of.

This album is terrific, one of the best of the year. The last three minutes or so of Runaway sum the record up (and sum Kanye West up) - completely self-indulgent, but it all somehow works.

As for him being as ass, I couldn't care less. If I can still enjoy Chinatown or Rosemary's Baby (and I do), Kanye West having a huge ego is easy to ignore.

I'm pretty sure this album wouldn't be nearly as good if Kanye WEREN'T a massive douchebag. It's what makes him good.

Not quite, to be somewhat anal.

I've only listened to the track that sampled 21st century schizoid man. It was okay I guess, for mainstream pop music of the 21st century (I'm so sorry). I assume it makes more sense within the context of the whole album, but I don't see myself listening to it.
