Don't write it off because of the singer, it's a great song and it describes me so well. I cut some of it out, but the best parts are there.

Kelly Clarkson wrote:I’m strong
But I break
I’m stubborn
And I make plenty of mistakes
Yeah I’m hard
And life with me is never easy
To figure out, to love
I’m jaded but oh so lovely
All you have to do is hold me
And you’ll know and you’ll see just how sweet it can be
If you’ll trust me, love me, let me
Maybe, maybe

I’m confusing as hell
I’m north and south
And I’ll probably never have it all figured out
But what I know is I wasn’t meant to walk this world without you
And I promise I’ll try
Yeah I’m gonna try to give you every little part of me
Every single detail you missed with your eyes
Then maybe
Maybe, yeah maybe

I don’t want to be tough
And I don’t want to be proud
I don’t need to be fixed and I certainly don’t need to be found
I’m not lost
I need to be loved
I just need to be loved
I just want to be loved by you and I won’t stop ‘cause I believe
That maybe, yeah maybe

It's funny, I had always thought that Rufus Wainwright wrote that song. I just looked him up on Wikipedia and found that he was just someone who did a popular cover of it.

I've got a pretty good list of these.

Modest Mouse wrote:And the people you loved but you didn't quite know,
They're the places that you wanted to go.

Quite simply because I know so many who fit into that category for me.

Streetlight Manifesto wrote:When they come for me, I'll be sitting at my desk
with a gun in my hand wearing a bulletproof vest
singing "My my my, how the time must fly
when you know you're gonna die by the end of the night

Because this is such a badass picture.

Franz Ferdinand wrote:You see her, you can't touch her
You hear her, you can't hold her
You want her, you can't have her
You want to, but she won't let you.

She's not so special, so look what you've done.

A day after this girl I really cared about dumped me, this song came on the radio. And I still think it's a good song.

So that's it for now.

This is a bittersweet song.

Death Cab For Cutie wrote:I once knew a girl
In the years of my youth
With eyes like the summer
All beauty and truth
In the morning I fled
Left a note and it read
Someday you will be loved.

I cannot pretend that I felt any regret
Cause each broken heart will eventually mend
As the blood runs red down the needle and thread
Someday you will be loved

You'll be loved you'll be loved
Like you never have known
The memories of me
Will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs
Like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved

You may feel alone when you're falling asleep
And everytime tears roll down your cheeks
But I know your heart belongs to someone you've yet to meet
Someday you will be loved

You'll be loved you'll be loved
Like you never have known
The memories of me
Will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs
Like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved

You'll be loved you'll be loved
Like you never have known
The memories of me
Will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs
Like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved
Someday you will be loved

Porcupine Tree's Heart Attack in a Layby
Context: I believe the primary character has killed his wife at this point. In Absentia is fucking art.

I pull off the road
East of Baldock and Ashford
Feeling for my cell
In the light from the dashboard
Hissing from the road
The smell of rain in the air con
Maybe check the news
Or just put a tape on
Lighting up a smoke
I've got this feeling inside me
Don't feel too good
If I close my eyes
And fell asleep in this layby
Would it all subside
The fever pushing the day by
Motor window wind
I could do with some fresh air
Can't breathe too well
(She waits for me. Home waits for me.)
I guess I should go now
She's waiting to make up
To tell me she's sorry
And how much she missed me
I guess I'm just burnt out
I really should slow down
I'm perfectly fine but
I just need to lie down
We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together
We'll grow old together....

The outro especially.

All I want is your understanding
As in the small act of affection
"Why is this my life?"
Is almost everybody's question

And I've tried
Everything but suicide
But it's crossed my mind

I prefer peace
Wouldn't have to have one word of possession
But essentially I'm an animal
So just what do I do with all the aggression?

Well I've tried
Everything but suicide
But it's crossed my mind

Life is a one-way street, and if you could paint it
I'd draw myself going in the right direction
So I go all the way - like I really really know -
But the truth is I'm only guessin'

And I've tried
Everything but suicide
Oooh but it's crossed my mind
Just a thought

It's even dark in the daytime
It's not just good - it's +Great Depression+
When I was lost I even found myself
Looking in the gun's direction

And so I've tried
Everything but suicide
But yes - it's crossed my mind
But I'm fine

Cedar trees growing in the cool of the squares
The young women walking in the portals of prayer

Of the things he's feeling

He could just be gone

How can I be lost,

When it's me I can't forgive?

I like this because although its sorrowful, its not depressing and they really convey the struggle of 'the unforgiven'.

I have appropriated Mike Keneally's "I Can't Stop" as my personal mission statement.

I'm the pawn. I'm the toy
In this world o'men I'm the little boy
Sooner or later there will come a time
When I can raise my head above the slime
I'll take a deep long breath and grin like a moron (whoa!)
Look at THAT over THERE
He hasn't got a care
I can't help thinking that it isn't fair
I hope to God I don't become like him
Will I remember how I felt when I wrote this
Or am I singing this with my brain off?

Call a cop. I can't stop.
I might drop drop drop. I can't stop.

Faces lie, handshakes hurt
The telephone just makes you feel like dirt
"We think you're great, we think you've got the knack
We're in a conference, can we call you back?"
FROM NOW ON I RESOLVE TO AVOID HUMILIATION (right)
Look at THAT over THERE
In the decision chair
With all the money and the glassy stare
I WILL CLIMB ABOARD A BIG JET PLANE
TAKE A TRIP RIGHT TO HIS HOME AND WHILE HE'S SLEEPING
PAINT THIS ON HIS BEDROOM WALL IN PIG BLOOD

Call a cop. I can't stop.
I might drop drop drop. I can't stop.

Usually I don't pay much attention to lyrics but this one song by Rob Dougan called "Born Yesterday" stuck out at me. It really does very accurately express how I feel sometimes:

Spoiler:
She thinks that I was born yesterday,
She thinks that I go out with the tide;
And fade at the end of the day,
She thinks my hairs ain't numbered,
And when pricked I don't cry in pain,
Just cause I smile like a child born yesterday,

And she thinks that I was born in another age,
She thinks that I get up with the sun and dream my life away,
And thinks cause I'm saying nothing,
That I've got nothing to say,
Just 'cause I smile like a child born yesterday

And she thinks that I was born yesterday,
She thinks that I came into this world,
Born without a name,
And she thinks that I'm going nowhere,
'Cause I stay at one place,
And 'cause I smile like a child born yesterday
Specifically the lines,
"And thinks cause I'm saying nothing,
That I've got nothing to say"

and,
"And she thinks that I'm going nowhere,
'Cause I stay at one place"

Hmm, it'd have to be "The Swing" by Everclear, couple of bits of that seem to reflect a lot of things i have done.

Spoiler:
never said i was innocent
i will burn in hell for the things i've done to you
never said i was anything good
i should die from the shame from what i put you through

let me be the one to bring us back from the dead
i will take the blame for everything
you know i just wanna help you forget

we are still living on broken glass
we are still numb because it just keeps happening
all your friends, they can kiss my ass
they only see the simple things that they want to see

let me be the one to make the pain go away
shave my skin and show a brand new face
you know i just wanna know that you're ok

you don't have to like it but the swing is in my hands now

sometimes i think
the power is better than a hard drug
sometimes i think
the power is better than anything
sometimes i think
letting go is just like giving up
sometimes all i think i wanna do is die inside
all i wanna do is die inside
all i ever think about is you and me falling apart

never said i was innocent
i will burn in hell for the things i've done to you
never said i was anything good
nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah

let me be the one to make the pain go away
shave my skin and show a brand new face
you know i just wanna know that you're ok
let me be the one to bring us back from the dead
i will take the blame for everything
i just wanna help you forget

sometimes i think
letting go is just like giving up
sometimes all i think about is falling apart

Especially

never said i was innocent
i will burn in hell for the things i've done to you
never said i was anything good
i should die from the shame from what i put you through

But one of the songs that means the most to me and reflects a lot of what did seem to happen a bit back is the whole of "Cute without the 'e'" by Taking Back Sunday (please don't mock me :( )

Spoiler:
Your lipstick, his collar.. don't bother Angel
I know exactly what goes on

When everything you'll get is
everything that you've wanted, princess
(well which would you prefer)
My finger on the trigger, or
(me face down, down across your floor)
Me face down, down across your floor
(me face down, down across your floor)
Well just so long as this thing's loaded

And will you tell all your friends
you've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinking,
this all was only wishful thinking
And will you tell all your friends
you've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinking,
this all was only wishful thinking
let's go...

Don't bother trying to explain Angel
I know exactly what goes on when you're on and
How about I'm outside of your window
(how about I'm outside of your window)
Watching him keep the details covered
You're such a sucker (you're such a sucker)
for a sweet talker, yeah

And will you tell all your friends
you've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinking,
this all was only wishful thinking
(the only thing that I regret is that I, I never let you hold me back)
And will you tell all your friends
you've got your gun to my head
This all was only wishful thinking,
this all was only wishful thinking

Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know you'll never love me [x2]
Hoping for the best just hoping nothing happens
A thousand clever lines unread on clever napkins
I will never ask if you don't ever tell me
I know you well enough to know...

Why can't I feel anything
from anyone other than you? [x2]

And all of this was all your fault
And all of this

(Makes things worse)
I stay wrecked and jealous for this,
for this simple reason
I just need to keep you in mind
as something larger than life
(she'll destroy us all before she's through
and find a way to blame somebody else)
I stay wrecked and jealous for this,
for this simple reason
I just need to keep you in mind
as something larger than life
(she'll destroy us all before she's through
and find a way to blame somebody else)
I stay wrecked and jealous for this,
for this simple reason
I just need to keep you in mind
as something larger than life!

Anyway, now i've dug those out, back to my ska. It keeps me sane!

There are so many, if I'm being honest, but here are some snippets of my favourites:

Baby Dee wrote:I'm black, but comely as a night shot with stars
I'm not a tree of sticks, no I'm not a tree of sticks
I'm a forest of hemlocks and peaches
Of waters dark as wine from boundless reaches
black, but comely as a night shot with stars

Talking Heads wrote:Home. That's where I want to be, but I guess I'm already there
..
the less I say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
There was a time, before we were born
It's okay, I know nothing's wrong

Queen wrote:Funny how the pages turn and hold us in between..

Gorky's Zygotic Mynci wrote:What happened to the church bell ?
What happened to the steeple ?
They're digging up gravestones
To make crazy paving
That don't lead nowhere at all
...
What happened to my dreams ?
When I woke up in the morning
Seems like those old dreams
Were out to destroy me
Hallelujah

After experiencing unrequited love, and desperately trying to claw my way out of nerddom into a more social lifestyle, I heard this:

Baxter - Television
Baxter wrote:I wish I had seen you in front of your TV set.
I wish I'd seen you when you blew what seemed to be the whole world to you.
I wish I woke up when you were sad.
I wish I had seen you in front of your TV set.

All alone in your room, you blew up your television.
The whole world to you, and less of you is left.

[I wish I could take you outside, and
I wish I saw the rest of you here.]

Still makes me shudder.
(I failed the quest for a more social life, btw, and I'm happy I did. Life's too interesting to waste it trying to be someone else.)

Oh, and Faithless - Insomnia. I've never suffered from insomnia myself, but that song is epic. A tale of frustration ending with turning it around into something creative, followed by an amazing hook in the last third of the song... incredible.

Spoiler:
Faithless wrote:Deep in the bosom of the gentle night is where I search for the light, pick up my pen and start to write.
I struggle and fight dark forces in the clear moon light without fear.
Insomnia.. I can't get no sleep.

I used to worry, thought I was going mad in a hurry. Getting stressed, making excess mess in darkness.
No electricity, something's all over me, greasy.
Insomnia, please release me and let me dream of making mad love to my girl on the heath. Tearing of tights with teeth.
But there's no release, no peace. I toss and turn without cease.
Like a curse, open my eyes and rise like yeast.
At least a couple of weeks since I last slept.
Kept taking sleepers, but now I keep myself pepped.
Deeper still, the night, I write by candlelight.
I find insight. Fundamental movement. [heh]
So when it's black this insomniac take an original tack.
Keep the beast in my nature under ceaseless attack.
I gets no sleep.
I can't get no sleep.

It's an oldie, but "Rick Springfield - My Father's Chair".

My father's chair's still standing there
All alone since the long night
Now it's three years on and I still feel
He'll come home, we'll be alright
So where's this healing time brings
I was told the pain would ease
But it still hurts like the first night

That night my brother, my mother and I
Were looking up at a distant star
And wishing we could reach that far
And back in the house
And alone for the first time
We told each other we cared
We avoided my father's chair

I watch my family, we hold on
We are strong and we'll be alright
The clock continues counting down,
All the while
And every child will share the long night
But do the spirits meet again
Why am I still so filled with doubt
Is my soul everlasting

And the far distant future
When I knew you'd be gone
Came too fast and stays too long
Why do they leave the weak of spirit
And take the strong

But when the world turns sour
And I get sick from the smell
And I can find no comfort there
I climb into my father's chair

On edit: Yeah, even cutting and pasting it makes me tear up. Still, that's life, we all die eventually, right?

Willy Mason - Live it up.

Specifically:
I watched my whole world crumble as I dried my mothers tears,
and learned to never stumble as I calmed my fathers fears,
They say I've seen a lot,
They say I'm wise beyond my years.

I don't know why I listen to Hung my head by Johnny Cash so often. I put it on at least once a day and a soon as it goes on the Happiness level goes down and Depression level goes up. Damn I love it.

Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

Sounds like such a sad song, but to me it's full of hope.

She had the World - Panic! At the Disco
Spoiler:
She said she'd won the world at a carnival
But she didn't ever win me
Because she couldn't ever catch me

I…I know why
Because when I look in her eyes, I just see the sky
When I look in her eyes, well I just see the sky

I don't love you
I'm just passing the time
You could love me
If I knew how to lie
But who could love me?
I am out of my mind
Throwing a line out to sea
To see if I can catch a dream

The sun was always in her eyes
She didn't even see me
That girl had so much love
She'd want to kiss you all the time
Yea she'd want to kiss you all the time

She said she'd won the world at a carnival
But I'm sure I didn't ruin her
I just made her more interesting
I'm sure I didn't ruin her
I just made her more interesting

Something about the surrealism and heavy fun but lost love theme is great.
I can most accurately describe Death From Above 1979's genre as "Heavy Indie Alternative Progressive Punkcore Dance Funk Metal"

mewithoutYou- "Torches Together"

Spoiler:
Why burn poor and lonely?
Under a bowl, or under a lampshade,
or on the shelf beside the bed
where at night you lay turning like a door on its hinges
(first on your left side, then on your right side, then your left side again).
Why burn poor and lonely?
Tell all the stones we're gonna make a building.
We'll be cut into shape, and set into place
or if you'd rather be a window,
I'll gladly be the frame.
Reflecting any kind words,
we'll let in all the blame
(and ruin our reputation all the same)
So never mind our plan making.
We'll start living!
Anyway, aren't you unbearably sad?
Then why burn so poor and lonely?

We'll be like torches!
We'll be like torches!
We'll be like torches!
Oh, we'll be torches together, torches together!
We'll be like torches!
We'll be like torches
with whatever respect out tattered dignity demands.
Torches together, hand in hand.

Why pluck one string?
What good is just one note?
Oh, one string sounds fine I guess, and we were once 'one notes'.
We were lonely wheat, quietly ground into grain
(What light and momentary pain!)
So why this safe distance, this curious look?
Why tear out single pages when you can throw away the book?
Why pluck one string when you can strum the guitar?
Strum the guitar!
Strum the guitar!
Strum the guitar!
Strum the guitar!
With no beginning, with no end
Take down a guitar and strum the guitar!
Strum the guitar if you're afraid,
And I'm afraid and everyone's afraid
and everyone knows it, but we don't have to be afraid anymore.

You played the flute but no one was dancing,
You sang a sad song and none of us cried.

The Duck Tales theme song has always said a great deal to me

Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg
Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes - it's a duck blur
You might solve a mystery or rewrite history

Duck Tales, Oo-oo
Tales of derring-do, bad and good luck tales, oo-oo

D-d-d-danger, watch behind you - there's a stranger out to find you
What to do? Just grab onto some Duck Tales, oo-oo!
Not pony tails or cotton tails but Duck Tales, oo-oo!

When it seems they're headed for the final curtain
Bold deduction never fails, that's for certain
The worst of messes become successes!

Duck Tales, Oo-oo
Tales of derring-do, bad and good luck tales, oo-oo
Not pony tails or cotton tails but Duck Tales, oo-oo!
"Left handed toilet paper?"

"You know that Google has been worth it these past ten years, because the answer to everything is no longer 42. The answer to everything is now 'google it'."

This song. I swear I was meant to hear it that day. I sat there and cried.
Spoiler:
Why are you striving these days
Why are you trying to earn grace
Why are you crying
Let me lift up your face
Just don't turn away

Why are you looking for love
Why are you still searching as if I'm not enough
To where will you go child
Tell me where will you run
To where will you run

And I'll be by your side
Wherever you fall
In the dead of night
Whenever you call
And please don't fight
These hands that are holding you
My hands are holding you

Look at these hands and my side
They swallowed the grave on that night
When I drank the world's sin
So I could carry you in
And give you life
I want to give you life

Chorus 2x

Cause I, I love you
I want you to know
That I, I love you
I'll never let you go
Life is beautiful.

mewithoutYou- "Silencer"

You gave me hope that I'd not lost her
And then thought it rather strange to see me smile-
as I don't do too much smiling these days.

mewithoutYou- "The Cure for Pain"

I opened like a locket,
"If you're ever cold," I wrote,
"there's warmth inside me.

But where she used to say "I need you."
Now...."I don't."

Tool, Lateralus, last verse. Best lyrical description of science I have ever heard.

With my feet upon the ground,
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in,
I feel it move across my skin.

I'm reaching out and reaching for,
The random or
Whatever will bewilder me
Whatever will bewilder me

Following our will and wind,
We may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end
And may just go where no one's been.

Spiral out, Keep going.

Parenthetical Girls - I Was The Dancer

Spoiler:
soiled my jeans lie in heaps beneath me
blood marrs the sheets and they stain so easily
swollen wrists, knees, and you swelled inside me
and it took nine months to destroy my body

I was the dancer
my head filled with laughter
and then the disaster
you came sometime after

I was young then
full of grace then
but oh, resentments

l. o. v. e. scratched your name into me
f. a. c. e. and it's traces of me
curls round your cheeks, christ, you looked just like me
when you took nine months to destroy my body

now I'm in my bed
you tore me asunder
and years after labor
its all I remember

I was young then
full of grace then
but oh, resentments

Yep, that's me alright.

I was going to post the entire set of lyrics to Time but you beat me to it.

On the day the wall came down
They threw the locks onto the ground
And with glasses high we raised a cry for freedom had arrived

On the day the wall came down
The Ship of Fools had finally run aground
Promises lit up the night like paper doves in flight

I dreamed you had left my side
No warmth, not even pride remained
And even though you needed me
It was clear that I could not do a thing for you

Now life devalues day by day
As friends and neighbours turn away
And there's a change that, even with regret, cannot be undone

Now frontiers shift like desert sands
While nations wash their bloodied hands
Of loyalty, of history, in shades of gray

I woke to the sound of drums
The music played, the morning sun streamed in
I turned and I looked at you
And all but the bitter residue slipped away...slipped away

This song also spoke to me, A Great Day For Freedom by Pink Floyd off of The Division Bell.

This speaks more to how I felt in highschool (so, yes, you can figure it's going to be a sad song) than I do now in college, but 'How To Fight Loneliness' by Wilco was always really meaningful to me.

Lyrics:
Spoiler:
How to fight loneliness
Smile all the time
Shine you teeth til meaningless
Sharpen them with lies
And whatever's going down
Will follow you around

Thats how you fight loneliness
You laugh at every joke
Drag your blanket blindly
Fill your heart with smoke
And the first thing that you want
Will be the last thing you ever need
Thats how you fight it

Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time
Just smile all the time

I particularly like the following lyrics from "the guitar man" I know that the Cake version is a cover but that's the one I know.
Then you listen to the music and you'd like to sing along
And you want to get the meaning out of each and every song
And you find yourself a message and some words to call your own and take 'em home
I'm also quite partial to Reel Big Fish's "live your dream"

Spoiler:
You say, I do everything the wrong way
Why don't I do it your way
Then maybe someday
I'll be just like you

But I say, I'm gonna do it my way
The "I might fail but I'll try" way
Well that's been done but it's ok
I'll do what I wanna do

Cause' I don't want
To live your dream,
I don't want to live your dream

No way, I'll take my chances this time
I've gotta go and live life
And I won't let you try and take mine
I just won't let you

Cause' I don't want
To live your dream,
I don't want to live your dream
I won't change what I believe
I won't change what I believe

So try to hold me if you want
Try to control me if you want
But you won't keep me down
I'm not your clown
I've got to find my own way now
So try to hold me if you want

But I say, I'm gonna do it my way
The "I might fail but I'll try" way
Well that's been done but it's ok
I'll do what I wanna do

Cause' I don't want
To live your dream,
I don't want to live your dream
I won't change what I believe
I won't change what I believe

You say, I do everything the wrong way
