United Nations building covered in gold?

Postby mathmannix » Tue Jun 02, 2015 3:05 pm UTC

OK, this is really stupid, but I always thought the UN headquarters in New York City was covered in gold. Turns out, it's not.

My only thought is that I read this in a book. I'm guessing it was Arthur C. Clarke's 2061 (or another in that series). I base this guess on another long-held misconception I once had, which definitely comes from that book; I read this book in middle school, and back then I took everything at face value. The book told me that (in the future, but I missed that part) South Africa was called The United States of South Africa, and I assumed that this was the current full name of that country. (Also not true!) This fact is easily googleable, but the UN gold thing is not, apparently. So, was that in this book? Or another in the Space Odyssey series? Or something else altogether?

This is the closest I can get: could you have mixed up two buildings? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Life_Building
