When and how much do you read?

Postby 1hitcombo » Sun Feb 24, 2008 3:12 pm UTC

With school, it's tough to find time to read. I usually end up reading in short breaks between classes where doing work wouldn't be productive and at night before I go to bed. It's been a while since I just sat down and read for hours. I also think that reading for classes for hours often puts me out of the reading mindset too.

what about YOU?

I read during certain easy classes. Basically, if I can get an A in that class without too much effort, I read during it. Probably not a good idea, but it's never dragged my grade down too far.
If you don't get too motion sick, you could try on the bus. Another option is to replace some time you'd normally spend browsing the webbernets with reading.

I read through lecture classes and pretty much all of HS. I don't really have many lectures now so I'll read on the weekends for a couple hours.

I read with the breakfast and on the bus, and if what I read on the bus produces a certain amount of interest I replace time for gaming, TV, socializing or web-browsing with reading .

i don't have a tv at the moment, so i read a lot of times during meals, especially if i am eating alone.
i also read a lot before bed, it's an easy way to put off going to sleep.
the bath is also a sacred reading place for me... i lock myself in with candles, bubbles & a book, & i'm set.

Besides anywhere and anytime I can? I would have to say about half an hour to an hour before I sleep.

In the bathroom, on the bus, I try to before I get to sleep but sometimes I'm too tired (other times I read for hours). From time to time I just sit down and read.

I used to spend most of my free hours reading - often for hours a day. Now, I hardly ever do - perhaps a few hours every couple of months or so. It's a shame - there are a lot of books I'd like to read.
This is a placeholder until I think of something more creative to put here.

I don't have a tv as well (purposefully) so my sole entertainment is reading and my sound system, I read whenever I'm not working or "hanging out". The previous meaning i read a lot being stationed in new jersey...sad flavor.

I read a good deal on the weekend as well as before bed. I haven't been reading as much as I used to [mainly due to school work] but before bed is always a good time to sneak in an hour or two.

During the week I read right before I go to bed. This actually helps me sleep, since the motion of moving my eyes across the pages helps to wear them out, almost like hypnosis.

I usually read half a chapter or a full chapter a night, depending on how thick it is. On average, I'd say about 15 to 20 pages.

During the weekends I tend to read more, especially if there's nothing on TV, or if I don't feel like playing a game on the PC or playing on the interwebz.

I've only read at work a few times, when it's been really slow, and/or if I'm in a hurry to get caught up, like with the Harry Potter series, when I was on a marathon to read all six of them before getting the last one, so I can have the entire series fresh in my brain.

Right now I'm reading The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and I've been working on it for about a week now. I think I'm up in the 20s chapter-wise. A lot of the chapters are very short, so that explains how far I am. I should have all five books (in one big volume) read by April, at the earliest. Depends on how much I read a day.

At work.

Seriously, I have nothing else to do, and have had nothing to do for the past 2 months. I'm not on anybody's contract, and my manager has nothing for me to do.

At bed, during meals, in the bathroom (nothing beats a hot bath with a good book), in between classes, and as a reward for finishing a specified amount of work. Sometimes I read while using a treadmill or exercise bike, but while I'm training, using a TV for distraction is easier on my neck.

I read on the train to and from work. Sometimes at night before going to bed, but that tends to be comics I have sitting around unread.

Whenever I can - on the bus, walking down the street, watching TV, on my lunch break, waiting for people, eating...

There are a few exceptions, but they're nsfw...

I always start feeling slightly awkward if I'm reading in public and get to a sex scene. I doubt that anyone is both psychic and easily offended, so no one is being bothered by it but me, but it still feels kind of weird.

Yep, I agree on that one. Especially if I'm on the bus. I worry that someone's reading over my shoulder and has suddenly decided that I'm some kind of sicko, given some of the unexpected sex scenes that I've come across in books.

It's even worse in school. I'm incredibly paranoid that a peer or teacher will catch a glance at one or two words, and I'll get suspended, or at the least, heavily embarrassed in front of my whole class. That's one reason why I don't read hardcovers much. You can't bend the cover inward to prevent others from seeing the text.
