House of Leaves Chain Letter

Postby Dakun » Wed Feb 18, 2009 4:13 am UTC

I'm willing to loan my copy of House of Leaves to anyone, anywhere in the world (I calculated shipping to Australia to be like 12.5$ or something, so i don't expect this to be a huge financial burden for me).

A couple conditions:
1. You agree to do the same after you finish reading it
2. I'm going to write on the back cover my name, forum name, geographic location, and the date I mailed it.
3. You have like 100+ posts so that I can trust you to participate.

Reply in this thread if you'd like to be on the list to receive (first come first served) I'll make a list, and once the next person in line completes the book, we'll go down the list, check to be sure they still want to participate, and mail.

Well I definitely don't have 100 posts, but I've been reading XKCD for around a year now. I've looked everywhere around me for a decently cheap copy, but haven't had any luck, so this would be perfect.

I can toss in my copy, as well.

Just saying.

It's beat up, but it works :P

So, we have two copies :)

I took heavy notes and added stickies to my copy, and I loaned it to a number of people, with the instructions to do the same. I suggest, for the entertainment value, that you instruct people to do the same, as peoples notes and opinions and footnotes in a book like this really add further intriguing elements.

..yeah, that you said that means you're probably not.

I should get around to reading my copy.

Don't worry about that. House of Leaves is one of those books that you can get something out of no matter how much you put into it. Even if all the pseudo-academic stuff would be completely over your head (and I'm not convinced it would be, even at 15), the core story about the house is still damn gripping.

I see you just joined the forums a few weeks ago - introduce yourself in the thread on the general form - I don't mind trusting people, just think that this should be fun and I want to make sure i'm not throwing my book away.

Love this idea - although I didn't do this myself, it might force a re-read.

Perhaps we need a lending-library thread, get a few people to donate books, and get a list going for the next in line to read...

I've been meaning to do something similar to this with some of my books:

http://bookcrossing.com/

BookCrossing and shipping to people are compatible, even - there's actually functionality built in to BookCrossing for that.

I'm definitely in. That book is hard to find! So, when do we start?
Also, will there be a deadline for sending it on? I figure it takes a long time for an individual to get through, so some people might be waiting a long time.
I already have a hate thread. Necromancy > redundancy here, so post there.

I edited my post - but we have 2 copies right now (thanks mewshi).
I saw rheakith post in the introduction thread, and he's getting more involved, but it makes sense to me that I'm going to send my copy out to Jack (seniority, plus, it was my idea, so and then that copy could be out in AU / NZ, and maybe Mewshi can send his to rheakith (PA to Ohio)?

Jack - if you want to PM me your address ... :)

That certainly sounds good to me, as long as you're okay with sending your copy to a relatively new poster Mewshi.

I honestly don't care. My biggest problem is covering the shipping. Since I'm in college, can I have the person closest to me? XD

I should actually finish reading my copy, but after that, I'm willing to send mine around as well. Might take a while though, I'm swamped with other (required) reading at the moment.

I have wanted to read this book for the longest time. I've tried to buy it from Amazon, but for some reason it didn't accept my credit card. I think I will try again, but until that time, I would love to participate in this.
It won't be a problem for me at all, to cover the shipping, but I'm not sure how best to do that. PayPal perhaps?

The leaving notes idea sounds awesome, it would be interesting to read, what others have left behind.

Honestly guys, it costs maybe 5 bucks maximum to send a book anywhere in the US. Maybe more like 3.

Very true. I, however, live in the Faroe Islands; I have no idea how much it would cost to send a book over here.
I bought a book from Lulu.com and it cost $10 dollars to send it, that was the most basic package, without tracing and such. The next step up was $100. I mean, I'm used to steep prices, living in a quite isolated country, but damn.

I don't know where you're at, but I'm in Central Ohio, so it won't be too terribly far from anywhere in the continental US.

My new beret!

Oh, and also, this book. Thanks dude. And I really hope that sticker on the front saying "$019.450" doesn't mean you had to spend 19 whole bucks. o.O

It took a bit of a beating on the way over, though, I'm not sure how many international voyages one book can survive.

Saladin's concerns about the book's condition are worrying, but I'd like to point out the more books there are, the less notes there'll be per book, and if the notes are only from your own country it wouldn't be as cool as an international book.

I also want to say, though I feel selfish and whiny, that if the book spent a while circling New Zealand, it'd be a little queue jumpy.

I ended up getting my own copy of the book, but I don't have a whole lot of time each day to read it, so it'll be pretty slow going of the ~700 pages. I'll post again once I've finished it and see who's up next though.

I am so down for this, especially w/ leaving notes in the margins. I already read it once, got a decent amount out of it, but felt like I would have to put in a whole lot more interpretive effort to get the full experience of getting "stuck" and escaping. I just got obsessed for about two weeks then yanked myself away. But if I already had others' thoughts with me at the same time...

Then again, I live in Alaska. But I'm still interested if anyone's feeling rich ;).

International Shipping wasn't cheap... no, but It's fine, and fun :).

How bad is it? ... should we stick to one copy (and a long/slow queue) or are others planning on mailing stuff out. If you choose to mail out, please pick from top of queue, and reach out to that person, if you end up sending, let me know via pm and i'll update the list!
