help needed with some Cyrillic text.

Postby amirkraus » Fri Feb 01, 2008 8:30 pm UTC

Hello ladies and gentlemen, fellow xkcd readers.

I was thinking this might be the best (and only?) place to get an answer.

This bottle found it's way to my possession, and I'm wondering what's in it:

I'd guess it's a 40% alcohol drink, made from grapes, but that's all I can figure.

Searching for various strings including that English title produced nothing.

Any help would be appreciated. :]

Um... Cyrillic is not a language, it's an alphabet. Lots of languages use Cyrillic, or forms of it. Since Russian is by far the most popular of those, find a Russian speaker.

I don't speak anything which uses the Cyrillic alphabet, but I've been trying to pick up Russian because it looked fun.

It appears to be Ukrainian, whatever it is (clues: "Україна", found under the illustration, is the Ukrainian word for "Ukraine"; also, searching for the name "Горілка особлива" (written above the big purple letters) returns a nice load of pages with domain names ending in ua and ukr in them). Maybe the Google searching will help with that.

My internet-fu may or may not be up to scratch, but here's what I found:
чорно = blackly
горілкд = vodka
ОСОБЛИВА = special, peculiar, distinct

The bit you want is probably "vodka".

Thanks! that kind of solves it.

I'm guessing "blacky" might be related to the type of fruit, as in "blackberries".

That's possible.

I tried translating the second word in the name, but either it's a proper noun or I couldn't spell it right so I couldn't.

As near as I can tell, it's a place-name. Maybe Smorod Nova = New Smorod?

I'd bet it's more like a personal name, something like Smirnov, though why it's a feminine style, I don't know.

BLACKCURRANT.

YES SIR. CRUISECONTROL!

No really, that was what I were thinking too.
It's Ukranian vodka made with a taste of blackcurrant, with 40% alcohol.
How does it taste? :D

Not to be inserted into penis

Okay, I wont. That was pretty easy to not do.

You say that, but you'll be lying in bed late one night when the temptation sets in.

It is only a matter of time.
