Right and Left - Truth and Lies.

Postby Muadita » Sat Nov 01, 2008 7:46 pm UTC

There is a country where right handed people write only truth with their right hand and only lies with their left hands, and left handed persons write only truth with their left hands and lies with their right hand. One time i went to that country and picked a paper from the floor and by just looking at it i know what kind of person wrote it (left or right sided). what did the paper said?

Making the (necessary) assumption it was written by a person using one of their hands. And what a boringly named thread this is.

Also:
Spoiler:
"I am writing this with my left hand" works, though indicating a left-handed writer

sorry about the tittle, i couldnt think of anything >.<

Here is a similar problem, the same conditions but this is the new problem,

There is a country where right handed people write only truth with their right hand and only lies with their left hands, and left handed persons write only truth with their left hands and lies with their right hand. One time i went to that country and picked a paper from the floor and by by looking at the paper, you know that NO ONE from that place could have written it, what did the paper said?

It seems like any number of paradoxes could have been written on the paper.
Spoiler:
"I am either right handed and wrote this with my left hand or left handed and wrote this with my right hand" - seems to work

EDIT: forgot to spoiler the solution... don't need to spoiler the first one, seems overly obvious

Yep. And hence people who write only truth and lies can't write it. Solved with no reference to handedness.

Spoiler:
He could have began writing the statement with his right hand, then switched and finished writing with his left hand. So "This is a " is a true statement (so far), and then "lie" at the end is in fact a lie, as the statement preceding it is true. The rules are ill-defined enough that this loophole could work. Alternatively he could be writing one statement with one hand "This is a truth" and then finished writing "This is not a lie" with his other hand so that when the two were put together it read "This is a " + "lie"

Out of curiosity, when is the last time anyone's seen a hand written paper?

I have almost three notebooks full of handwritten crap. Mostly notes on video games.

Surely you can tell if someone's writing with the wrong hand from the handwriting?

Spoiler:
The statement is "This entire statement is a lie." All that must be noted is the idea that someone is in his hotel room, and has picked up his piece of paper, and having identified that they wrote it, now knows that none from that country has written that statement on the paper. For they cannot write it with their right hand, since it would be a lie, and they cannot write it with their left hand, since they cannot write a true statement with it. So they cannot plagerize with the right, and copying down the statement, which is true when written only with the left hand, prevents them from ever being able to write it.

also more simply that works because writing it with the right hand would make it a lie, and writing it with the left hand would make it true. Even switching hands, it would still apply to the whole statement, and therefore cannot be written by anyone in that country.

My uncreative solution:
Spoiler:
The paper had foreign language written on it!

Which unfortunately relies on the assumption that...
Spoiler:
no-one in that country would or could ever write in a foreign language.
