Tractor? I hardly know 'er!

Postby ohthecommotion » Mon Oct 16, 2006 3:54 pm UTC

You're ambling amiably through the super secret forest of logical puzzles and notice a small island about a mile away from shore. Due to your excellent forest vision, you see a Forest person plowing a field with a large tractor. There are no bridges or tunnels to the island and you wonder how the tractor got out to the island.

"That's a good question," says a nearby forest person, reading your mind. "I have the only boat around here and it's not big enough to carry that tractor over. I didn't drop off any parts either so he couldn't have built it there. No one has an airplane or helicopter to drop it off either."

So how did the tractor get on the island?

(Notes:
1. the tractor was not built on the island
2. even with tides, the water is too deep to drive across
3. it was not driven across the bottom of the ocean or under water
4. it was not disassembled)

No self-respecting tractor would be light enough to float. And I'm guessing anything that could float the tractor over wouldn't exist, since the mind-reader said that he has the only boat that could do the job

He used the tractor itself to build a land bridge. He piled up mounds of dirt out of the water and drove over them to the island.

Or maybe he created the island and then destroyed the land bridge.

Or global warming.

Or George Bush.

Or the war in Iraq.

Or the island was created after the tractor was already there by some random, irrelevant cause. Sismic activity or flood. yeah flood. The island used to be a hill, the valley was flooded and the emerged part of the hill is the island.

It's not an island. It's a peninsula!

Well, if we assume the driver is Jesus, this is very easy.

But, for the sake of fun, well say it's an average, non-god Joe. Okay, I got it. the "island" is South America. panama, specifically. The tractor was driven from North to South America, and then used for the construction of the Panama Canal

Or rather, it was a peninsula. And the tractor was used to make it into an island.

Well, he never actually said the tractor was on the island.
Due to your excellent forest vision, you see a Forest person plowing a field with a large tractor.
Soo, the answer is just that there is no tractor on the island.

I know this one: the island refers to a road type island, not one surrounded by water. It's one of those trick questions.

Spoiler:
1) The forest person has the only local boat, but the tractor was brought in by an international tractor freighter from a different place.

2) There is no tractor. The tractor is in your mind.

3) The speed of the tractor and plow exceeds the speed of light in soil, hence the Cherenkov radiation.

There are several solutions that haven't been considered yet.

Spoiler:
1) The tractor is fast enough to drive across the surface of the water without sinking. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oeJjzdlTuI - see at 2 minutes 60 seconds)

2) Quantam tractor. (Just as likely to be on the island as not)

3) Amphibious tractor. (drives on water as well as land)

4) Zeppelin.

5) Island is actually the back of a giant turtle. (or a floating man-made island)

6) Catapult + Parachute. (Or, rockets & parachute)

7) He took the bridge. (my favorite)
Is 'no' your answer to this question?

It's possible that he put the tractor on wood and attached it to his boat ( he did say that he had one, I don't think that it was a read herring.)

There was a bridge/tunnel. Or there is and the water level's obscuring it.

The tractor travelled through time from a point where it wasn't an island to that time wherein the island is an island

Farmer owns a netbook. Python command 'import tractor'

A contractor was going to build a bridge from the island to the mainland. He pulled out his protractor to measure some angles 'n' shit. The two ions reacted to leave a single tractor of mass equal to the sum of protractor and contractor but with no charge upon it.

So what are Forest people and what is forest vision? Also, depending on your definition of tractor, it could be a plane..so there is no real mystery
: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Tractor+airplane The plowing part could refer to him plowing the airplane into the ground (i.e. crashing).

Never seen that one. However, what he could have done is "import antigravity" - problem solved. :P

The tractor:
  • was towed across by the polar bear
  • was lifted across by the smoke monster
  • was warthog-jumped across using dynamite from the Black Rock
  • will be explained in Season 6.

Notice the question does not say the tractor is on the island.

This one weighs 17.7t and can swim at 8km/h: http://www.military-today.com/engineering/cet.htm

... so it's being replaced with one that can't.

So ... tides? I take it this is meant to be an oceanic island, not a small island in a lake that was created by construction of a dam.

I'd go with "a small island" being a reference to "Notes From A Small Island" but Britain's more than "about a mile" from France.

A causeway? That's neither a bridge nor a tunnel.

So either we're in a polar region and the sea froze or ... "There are no bridges or tunnels to the island" is crucially present tense. There was a bridge. It's gone now ... or there was another boat, or someone did have a helicopter ... or that tractor's been out there since the sea wasn't so deep here, but between global warming and post-glacial reboudn the water's now too deep for it to come back.

There is no tractor or island, given the "super secret forest of logical puzzles" doesn't exist, and the depiction of someone answering a question you just thought about, it's clearly

Forest people are pixies. They're tiny. It's a large tractor for a forest person. It got there courtesy of an eagle, kite, buzzard or heron under the influence of forest person magic.

If you think you can include a contractor, and then end with "no charge", clearly you've never dealt with a contractor.
