3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

I was brousing another website and someone posted the following 3 riddles - to which they don't have the answers .... and to be honest they're doing my head in ..... so help would be much appreciated plzz.

Riddle 1:
A pretty thing am I fluttering in the pale blue sky, delicate fragile on the wing indeed I am a?

I've got several answers in mind, dunno which (if any) are correct:
Spoiler:
A butterfly, dragonfly or damselfly maybe ..... or maybe not ???

Riddle 2:
I'm as big as an elephant, but lighter than a feather. What am I?
Spoiler:
Someone suggested a cloud but that will weigh ALOT more than a feather. Someone else suggested the elephant's shadow which seems ok to me.

Riddle 3:
If a sponge becomes an avocado how far is it to bens pink castle?
This is the one that's got everyone stumped - I ain't got a scooby doo .... anyone any ideas plzz ????

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

The last one reminds me of another riddle I know:

A man builds a normal house with a roof, four walls and such. All walls face south. What color is the bear that's passing in front of the window?
The answer is "white". His house must be built on the north pole and that's where polar bears live.

I think the train of thought must be something similar, but I still can't figure it out, maybe I'm missing some pop culture reference / meme here. Spongebob? That's a pineapple though...

Any ideas?

PS the answers to the first ones look good. The first might then be a cloud.

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

The only "ben's pink castle" I can think of is Howden Castle. Somehow I doubt its popular enough to merit its own riddle.

You can also use sponges to grow an avocado:
Spoiler:
Sponge Sprouting Method
Moisture weakens the hard outer hull of an avocado pit so it germinates more quickly. Thoroughly moisten two sponges, wringing out the excess water so they aren't dripping wet. Use sponges larger than the avocado pit. Place the pit between the sponges. Slide the sponge-wrapped pit into a zip-top plastic bag and seal it closed. The bag traps the moisture so the pit remains moist at all times. Check on the pit every three to five days and plant it in soil as soon as the pit begins to crack and roots or a sprout appear.

So I have no idea, but maybe that helps?

I don't think that there are necessarily any definitive answers to the first two riddles -- probably anything could be quibbled with to varying degrees. I also think your answers are fine (okay, your answer to #2 is actually awesome), but here are the ideas I had before looking at them which are just about as fine.

Spoiler:
1) A dandelion seed
2) A hot-air balloon

Using the logic that a cloud is heavier than a feather, a hot air balloon would be thrown out as well.

I agree with the butterfly and elephant's shadow.

The third has me stumped as well...

For one I immediately thought the answer was in the phrasing:
Spoiler:
"delicate fragile on the wing"= a feather?

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

would an elephant sized cloud (actually pretty small) weigh more than a feather? sure it would have higher mass, but that high up in the atmosphere it's density is going to be very low.

Spoiler:
i just googled and Butterfly and Elephant's Shadow are definitely right, the third riddle is only found here and where you found it on the whole internet, so i think that one is going to stay unsolved for now.

I dunno, it really seems like the answer to:

A pretty thing am I
fluttering in the pale blue sky,
delicate fragile on the wing
indeed I am a ______

should be 3 syllables and rhyme with wing. I'm going with "flying thing".

After buoyancy in air, the cloud is lighter than a feather: It doesn't fall down

The case without atmosphere is left as an exercise for the reader

Likely: an a-a-b-a rhyme.

Unlikely: it wants the German word for butterfly: Schmetterling

Googling Ben's Castle leads to a line of rentable bounce castles, although I saw nothing that reminded me of avocado.

If, on the other hand, a sponge becoming an avocado is an image for inflating such a bouncy castle, the answer (for your child ) is "take off your shoes" (or "over there" or "just turn around" or ...)

I'm thinking Ben's Pink Castle might be an anagram or something, otherwise I can't think of it as being anything but nonsense.

For #3, I think some person just decided that it would be fun to make people waste hours trying to solve a riddle that soesn't make sense.

#3 SOLVED!

I know this topic is old and keeps getting dug up, but it's been eating at me for months.

I'm almost 100% sure this is the answer, although it's pretty retarded for several reasons. First, as someone previously mentioned, an avocado can be grown by soaking the seed in a sponge to start it off. Since this is true, I assumed that first half wasn't as nonsensical as it first seemed. The second half makes no sense, so I started playing around with it attempting to
Spoiler:
pronounce some letters and not others
...and I think I've 'decoded' it.

Spoiler:
I wrote out the pronunciation of letters in parenthesis- otherwise it is pronounced as normally expected.

how far is it to (bee)ns [silent p]in(kay) (ss)a[silent s](tee)(ell)(uh)?
how far is it to (bee)ns in (kay)(ss)a(tee)(ell)(uh)?
how far is it to beans 'n' Quesadilla?

If a sponge becomes an avocado, how far is it to beans 'n' quesadilla?

Since avocados can go in a quesadilla, I'm pretty sure this is it.

I have several problems with this though,
Spoiler:
2.) to solve it, you have to just ignore several letters
3.) This person is going to have to wait a very VERY long time for that quesadilla.
4.) Unless we're talking about a relativistic dinner here, I'm pretty sure you'd want say 'how long' rather than 'how far,' otherwise the readers assumes to search for a distance rather than a time.

And at the end of it, you STILL don't actually answer the question.

I don't know, the average preparation time for quesadilla? Regardless, if that was the solution, the I am disapoint. Not that I think that there will be a better solution put forward, it was a pretty absurd, gibberish-type question anyway.

12 characters or 18 characters including spaces.

stupid, but could be something related to that path.

or perhaps something dealing with i, k, & l being the only characters in "bens pink castle" not in "sponge becomes an avocado"

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

These remind me of some radio ads that Netflix is running. The setting is the final round of a trivia show, with the host asking questions and the contestant guessing answers. For instance:

Q: What is the next item in the sequence: Tree, cloud, ...
A: Transubstantialism!

Q: If two's company, and three's a crowd, what is 185?
A: A bar mitzvah!

And fortunately, no one has brought up that ****ing "gry" riddle.
(The proper phrasing for this riddle is:

Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is.

Spoiler:
Language. Re-read the phrase in the second sentence as "the English language".

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

Spoiler:
If a sponge becomes an avocado , we are in the Crab Nebula. The Crab Nebula is both sponge like and shaped like an avocado (prolate spheriod) and has sort of an avocado green center.

http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/ ... n-far-out/

Bens pink castle is located in NGC6357 near Pismis 24. The 'Ben' is Ben Franklin who said, "I have been apt to think that there has never been, nor ever will be, any such thing as a good war, or a bad peace." and NGC6357 is known as the War and Peace Nebula.

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap101121.html

How far is it is a trick question. The usual Earth bound human will attempt to use the distances of the nebulae from the Earth and the angle between them in the sky to create a triangle and calculate the distance. The savvy interstellar traveler will know that there is a wormhole connecting the Crab Nebula and Pismis 24. The wormhole was created during the supernova of the Crab Nebula connecting it to the extreme stellar masses of Pismis 24. The length of the wormhole is only 1.38 light-years.

Knowing the answer to this question will get you into some of the best alien after hour clubs on Earth.

Welcome to the xkcd forums! The reason your posts kept dissapearing is because of an approval neccesary for new posters. They do show up now, though; don't worry.

As for the puzzle, I do agree that, if there was no posted answer, the poser is merely tricking you.

Re: 3 Cryptic Riddles (I don't have the answers) .......

I think there's some merit to thinking that "sponge becomes avocado" means "holey guacamole", which would suggest that "ben's red castle" is another phrase or saying of some kind.

Well, if it is, the intention is pretty oblique. Guacamole has other stuff in it too... I mean, its the best we've heard, but its still not really gelling.

For question #3 it could be talking about evolution, a sea sponge evolving into an avocado.

I also have some answers for #2. In space, there is no counterforce to gravity, and therefore no weight, so an elephant-sized asteroid could be the answer. Also, the bream of a flashlight gets larger as it goes farther away, and weighs practically nothing, so that works too.

It couldn't. A sponge is an animal, an avocado is the fruit of a plant, Their common ancestor was single celled and lived about 1.5-1.8 billion years ago. Sponges only evolved 650mya.

Now, the avocado is interesting evolutionarily. It evolved symbiotically with large mammals like the giant ground sloth (hence the large seed). But the sponge has no such corollary.

Going with holy guacamole could ben's pink castle refer to

The pink Castel Gandolfo of Pope Benedict XVI?

I don't know how far that is.
