What do you order at Subway?

Postby poochyena » Sun Mar 03, 2013 1:54 am UTC

So, just curious, what kind of sandwich do you order at subway(or other similar place)?
I always get ham, a little lettuce, pickles, and mayonnaise on italian bread.
simple, but i love it, eat it on average once a week.

I live in a place with a bunch of little local sandwich shops, so I don't go to Subway much. The one chain I go to semi-regularly is Which Wich, where I often get the turkey and ham on toasted wheat, with provolone, hot pepper mix, whatever vegetables sound good (tomatoes if in season, cucumbers, spinach), and deli mustard. Or I go to a banh mi place and get a combo with a bunch of unidentified cold cuts, pickled vegetables, and pate. One place near me sometimes does a pho dip, which is a banh mi version of a French dip.

My Subway sandwich favorite is pretty simple: I usually get a turkey sub with american cheese, lettuce, and black olives on Italian bread. Sometimes I'll also have mustard and/or tomatoes, if I feel so inclined.
This is my Tumblr, for the curious and/or bored. It mostly consists of random things/ideas I find interesting* and pictures of my friend Catherine.

*This might include but is not limited to: science, my research experiences, gender, feminism.

Turkey on Italian herb and cheese, with Monterey Jack, lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green peppers, olives, and maybe jalapenos if I need some excitement.

I don't go to Subway at all, unless it's the only place nearby. The one near my house is staffed with a bunch of rude people, including the manager. The ones near my work all seem a little run-down.

If I want a sub, I'll go to either Firehouse Subs or Quiznos if I'm at work, or Jurassic Subs if I'm at home. The latter is a locally-owned sub shop that has larger-than-normal subs (9" and 15", as opposed to 6" and 12"), use fresh ingredients, and the whole restaurant is dinosaur-themed. All of the subs are named after different types of dinosaurs, and they have a large dinosaur mural in the store. They offer more sides than Subway, including a kick-ass Greek pasta salad, and along with the fresh ingredients, they make their own meatballs and tuna salad.

It's located in a space that once housed a Quiznos, but the Q shut down after it was revealed the manager was mismanaging funds. Jurassic kept a lot of the fixtures there, and had some custom-made stuff installed. The pepper bar, for example, doesn't have peppers; they have a huge array of sauces with which you may use to dress up your sandwich.

But, when I go to either of those places, I usually get a meatball sub with cheese (provolone or mozzarella, whichever they have; both if they got them), add on parmesan and oregano, or I'll get a tuna salad sub, with lettuce, tomato, oregano, salt and pepper, and light oil and vinegar. If I go to Jurassic and get the tuna, I'll have them put on the red wine vinaigrette. It makes it taste much more awesome.

Meatball is, to be honest, the only filling that feels like eating something substantial (pun possibly intentional) and meal-like. Every other filling just feels like eating a pretty regular sandwich that you could have made at home.

BLT with mayo, lettuce tomato, light onions, light honey mustard, light oil, on honey oat.

Green peppers, onions, spinach, and olives, with oil put on this, and toasted, then put on a meatball sub, which has more spinach put on it, and oregano and parmesan, all toasted, on italian herbs and cheese.

Working at subway means being able to experiment. I made a calzone on Sunday. It did not turn out so well, but when I have future opportunities they will.

When we have avocado, I basically make the beach club that you can get from Jimmy John's, with onions and oregano also.

I don't eat sandwiches made from chicken strips, because they smell like garbage. Chicken breast also has a funny texture and smell.

FOOTLONG (of course) BMT on Italian herb and cheese bread (or hearty Italian if I am feeling in the mood) ... obviously toasted with cheese (sometimes double cheese) with lettuce, pickles, red onion and olives. With mayo or ranch.

I don't have it often at all (once a month, if that), so when I do I go all-out-naughty

This. Also the buffalo chicken sub. Everything is like, "oh, you want a turkey sandwhich? here's half-a-slice of turkey, and 16 pounds of lettuce."

Usually sweet onion chicken teriyaki (or whatever it's called) on flatbread, toasted with cheese, lettuce and pickles.
But currently nothing, as it is Passover.

"A little bit of lettuce, just a little."
*about 50% of the time, an eyeroll as they go back for a THIRD handfull, not knowing the definition of the word 'little'*

I have to agree that meatball is really the only sub with some substance (pun quite possibly intentional), with Philly cheesesteak and tuna salad tying in second.

One thing I've found that makes a Philly phenomenal is to do the following, granted you can get the sandwich shop to cooperate:

1. Order the Philly cheesesteak
2. Ask to have onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms added.
3. Add extra cheese.
4. Ask for A1 or HP sauce (brown sauce) and Worcestershire sauce. You will need both for this.
5. Toast the bastard.
6. Order drink, and if so desired, some side item.
7. Pay for meal.
8. Unwrap sandwich.
9. Take bite.
10. Take immediate journey to cheesesteak heaven.

If you just get a steak and cheese rather than a philly, you pay at least a dollar less and get nearly the same amount of meat (if half the cheese). Also it is easier to close.

Veggie Delite (augh, that "word") with provolone, and using all veggies except the pickled peppers and jalapenos. With mayo and dijon mustard, and vinegar if I can convince them to.

It is reminiscent of my favourite sandwich, while not actually getting there, quite. My favourite sandwich has all the above plus sunflower seeds and hummus. (Actually, not quite the same because I don't choose quite the same vegetables. In an ideal world, I get spinach, carrots, cucumbers, pickles, onions and green bell peppers as the vegetables. This doesn't happen a lot.)

I used to order everything they had that complied with my dietary requirements, asking for as much as possible -- then decided it was expensive, not very big and not very difficult to make.

My favorite thing to order, when they are selling it, is the steak and cheese. I love it when they ask: "Do you want cheese on it?" I finally got up the courage once to say: "No, and hold the steak, too." It's a steak and cheese sandwich!!!!!

Subway doesn't have a plain "steak sandwich". If someone does want a steak sandwich without cheese, they're going to ask for the steak and cheese sandwich, and then request that the cheese be left off. They probably ask that because it's a thing that happens, and even if it doesn't, it's much easier and simpler to ask rather than to have someone bitch out at you. It's also a good habit to stay in-- better to ask the question even when it's dumb than to forget to ask the question when it's relevant. In a high-volume customer service environment, you don't always have the time to make fine judgments like that.

This. When I worked in food services, people would get pissed off because the cheeseburger they ordered had cheese on it.

Sesame bread, Veggie Delite, roasted, no cheese, all veggies, salt and pepper, no sauce/fluid condiments. I don't eat that often at Subway, but I think they do make decent sandwiches. Then again, in Germany they basically have no competition in the field of sandwich making. I can't think of any place else in my town.

Do none of your Subways offer mozzarella cheese? Ours do, but depending on which location you go to, some want to argue that the mozzarella is strictly for their pizzas. This is why I prefer Quizno's, Firehouse, or Blimpie if I'm near work (forgot we had a Blimpie near us, and that they are good) to Subway. Quizno's and Firehouse both have mozzarella. Blimpie uses prov-fucking-olone. I think Firehouse actually uses both mozzarella and provolone. Jurassic, the independent sub shop, has both, and will use both, if you ask for it.

I don't go to subway.

At sandwich places I usualy order filet Americain (steak tartare for the non-Dutch) with some onion and sometimes an egg.
I also sometimes order the warm meat (warm pork tenderloin for the non-Dutch) with peanut sauce.

Apart from all the other problems usualy associated with chain restaurants, I don't believe that either of these can be had at a subway, so I see no reason to even enter a subway.

It's not even entirely the anatomical connotation, it's the non-specific way that it could refer to any sort of meat at all, and also is it cooked? It's not hot... Why is it warm? Is it alive? Is it the warmth of decomposition? Is it cat?

It is only non-specific because you are not Dutch (and don't forget that I specified the type of meat in my post for the non-Dutch) This is however no- les generic then the word hot-dog or hamburger. (The hot dog, must be dogmeat, but why is it hot, is it horny, is it spicy?)

I mostly just noticed that there were only subs mentioned that I never order, and that the once that I do like you can get in every sandwich place, except subway, here (I checked Dutch subway online to check if they really didn't sell them to confirm to local places)

Here, subway has an odd monopoly on small town fast food. If you're on a road trip, small towns will almost always have a locally owned sit down restaurant that may or may not be any good, and a Subway, or at least a Subway counter in a gas station. When those are your options, Subway isn't a terrible choice.

Also Canadian here, and yeah, Subway far outnumbers pretty much any other single fast food chain, and every fifth gas station on the highway has a Subway. $5 Footlongs are by far the best thing if you need road-food and have kids in the back seat.
