Wow, old thread.

Anyway, warning to anyone in the U.S. ordering pizza elsewhere. (In may be obvious from this thread.) Be careful about ordering pizza with "everything" on it. Different countries have different ideas about what counts as pizza topping. It can be a waste of a good pizza and good caviar. Zohar's toppings looked pretty odd, that's Israel, yes?

Pesto instead of tomato sauce sounds delish.

Mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and a meat other than pepperoni = a delicious pizza. (Olives optional.)

I'm from Israel but they're considered pretty odd here as well. Most people have pineapple topping with pepperoni or something.

I'm usually quite a openminded guy, but warm pineapple on pizza is something I will never understand, or accept.

It's that combination of a taste that doesn't fit into the rest of the pizza, the nasty feel that warm pineapple have, and the awful smell. It's wrong, and morally inexcusable.

For anyone that can't figure it out: I'm exaggerating in the above - I do detest pineapple on pizza a great deal, but I generally don't care to much how you mistreat your taste buds, as long as you keep it away from me.

pineapple with pepperoni? in the UK "Ham and Pineapple" is a staple pizza topping, but not pineapple and pepperoni

Роберт wrote:Pesto instead of tomato sauce sounds delish.

i like pesto, but i find it pretty sickly, i think it would overpower a pizza if it were used in place of tomato sauce, unless perhaps it had no cheese, so it was just base, pesto and then meat or veg or whatever,

i never could have imagined a cheese-less pizza until i ordered a four seasons that i didn't realise only had cheese on one quarter, the other 3 quarters were surprisingly nice, and i normally love cheese.

I dunno!!! I'm vegetarian!! Stop attacking me!!! Besides maybe it's because ham isn't kosher so some places don't carry it. Doesn't stop them from service meat on a pizza though. :P

*wiki* Ah, turns out pepperoni is made from pork as well.

Anyway, I dunno, I never bother to look at non vegetarian pizza toppings. My point was that it's very possible to see a place serve meat on top of a pizza, but not pork, though both are non kosher.

Personally, I LOVE hawaiian pizza. Also good: other cheeses, like gorgonzola. Fresh tomatoes. Pretty much any meat. Unacceptable: Mushrooms, onions.

The statements I see in this thread..

Mushrooms and onions are both among the single best toppings known to mankind.

If any of you are ever in the vicinity of where I live I'd like to prove that my mushrooms, onions, bell peppers on a tomato base (with lots of garlic), on a sourdough bread of coarse flour and durum flour, topped with mozzarella and Gorgonzola are superior to any other pizza.

(for the record, most pizza places around here are owned by middle eastern people, that usually doesn't eat pork either - they have 'pepperoni' made on lamb, which is very good as well!)

i agree with Chuff, but only because i am allergic to mushrooms, and onions have the most horrible texture of any food ever, i can only eat them if they have been cooked to death to the point where they are falling apart, and have their flavour covered up by something else like in bhajis or a bolognase or something, but you might aswell just use onion powder if you wanted to cook something that's supposed to contain onions, for me.
totally acceptable onion analogue is garlic though, i can't get enough garlic ever.

i also don't like peppers, maybe chuff is my pizza soulmate.... nah.

I'm pretty sure the cows who gave the milk for the cheese are not the mothers of the animals slaughtered to make the meat.

You're probably right, but that doesn't matter in Judaism. The bible may literally say not to cook a calf in its mother's milk, but the inhibition has been extended to all meat not being cooked with any sort of milk. This even applies to chicken. Not to fish, though, because they are not considered meat, kosher-wise.

See, it seems to me that if you wanted beef on your pizza, you ought to be able to just use goat cheese, and then pile on the beef.

I've had goat cheese on my pizza. Usually it's in addition to regular cheese. It's not bad.

I'm pretty easy going with pizza. No olives. That's probably the only thing I won't eat, and if there are olives, I'll try picking them off first. Not a big onion on pizza fan, but I can deal.

White sauce is pretty awesome on pizza sometimes. Not an every time pizza, but generally pretty good. Also, I like 4 cheese over mozzarella.

I will heartily agree with no olives. To me they overpower the rest of the flavors, and I don't really like them that much to begin with anyway.

Except... it doesn't work like that. It's a combination of <any milk> with <any meat>. Including poultry too. Why? Turns out in the past it was simple enough to confuse chicken with beef, so they disqualified chicken too. The problem doesn't exist these days but it's a very traditionalist religion.

You could always use soy fake-meat or fake-cheese. With fake-meat, even normally pork-based toppings are possible.

I'm a big fan of pizza topped with döner kebab, garlic sauce, hot sauce (sambal) and (French) fries, topped off with cheese. Yes, you read that right. Not too often mind you, but every once in a while, it's delicious!

three year thread necomancy? nice.

Pizza for me is something made at home, as a fridge cleaner. Due to pizza dough's long-fermentation time in the fridge (Yes, I know you can make it without cold fermenting it for 1-3 days, but I think it should be long-fermented), I have a tendancy to make some dough when my sourdough starter needs feeding, then within a few days make pizza. Interesting (and good!) combos recently (all I similarly cheesed):

Sauceless (just olive oil, salt, and herbs), thin sliced potato, tuscan kale, garlic, red onion.
Sauce made of crushed canned tomatoes and herbs, brocolini, mushrooms (maitaki), hot italian sausage.
White sauce, anchovys (shut up, they are amazing), swiss chard, thin sliced potato
Sauceless (olive oil, salt, herbs), cherrystone clams, arugula (rocket), gypsy peppers (like small, sweet bell peppers)

Great way to use up little bits of veggies or meats left over in the fridge after a week of meals.

You're about a month late for a matching 3-year necro but what the hell.

I posted in this thread the first time around (6 years ago wtf) I like plain pizza. I think there are two types of people, those who like pizza and those who think pizza is a good way to get toppings into their mouth. I'm sure there are some who like toppings just as much as they are particular about the bread/sauce/cheese but fundamentally you are either a toppings person or a pizza person. I am a pizza person and as such I hold that toppings do not a pizza make. They are unique preferences of individuals that do not fundamentally alter what's underneath. The pizza is good or bad independent of it's toppings. I actually prefer not having toppings so I can taste the pizza on it's own.

Toppings are important, and can make or ruin a pizza, but yeah, there's a lot more to it than just the toppings. Sauce matters a *ton*. I prefer a sauce be nice and spicy, not too sweet. Nice thin crust.

As for ruining a pizza, Pizza Hut continues to circle the drain with their introduction of a bacon cheese stuffed crust. I figured I'd give it a shot on the basis of "I like bacon". This was a grave error. It has the smell and texture of vomit. Never again.

Zucchini. You might want to salt it for a while first and blot off the excess moisture. Zucchini flowers, if you can get them.

Talk of pizza and it has to be one (or a combination) of the following: pepperoni, onions, bacon, black olives, pineapple, mushrooms, sausage and of course extra cheese. What I absolutely detest on a pizza (and everywhere else for that matter) are green peppers and spinach.

Corn? I've never seen that on a pizza.

Anyway, mushrooms for tomato-y pizzas, potato for pizzas with creamy sauces (probably also for any sauce but I haven't tried). Spinach works. Expanding from other tomato things I know how to make, maybe grate carrots? That can work in bolognese. I second zucchini as a suggestion as well.

Ive always hated the idea of fruit on pizza.

For me, the more topping the better the pizza, mostly meat. Papa John's banana peppers are soooo good though on pizza. Yummmmmm

Problem is we're trying to cut down on the meat cause it's just not good for my wallet, the environment and our general health. Also it's boring as fuck.

To go on a tangent. Spoilere'd cause not really relevant.
Spoiler:
I'm just sick as fuck of people being all jokingly "meat! Add more meat!", the internet's intense bacon obsession and people seriously refusing to eat anything on the pizza that isn't meat. Do you really need bacon, pepperoni and meatballs one a single pizza? Sure it's delicious, but goddamn, be a bit open to try out new things. I'm by no mean a vegetarian nor do I have any moral qualms about eating animals, but the way our society and internet culture obsesses over meat is fucking disguising. There are other options and insisting on eating meat every single fucking day is such a massively privileged position it's directly terrifying that so many people can afford to sit there and preach it with a thinly veiled air of superiority. I dunno, maybe I'm just getting old.
