When I was in Bali I had some of that monkey/cat poo coffee. Couldn't really see what the fuss is about though. Butter fried coffee from Sabah is still my favourite :3

Well, after the beans cooked with butter (and vanilla I think) during the roasting process. The stuff is then ground down to a fine powder for export. Brewing requires a special 'wind-sock' like filter to collect the powder. Basically, the flavour is strong and creamy even though the coffee itself is very black. And its delicious. Very happy when I can get my hands on a pack :D

Pardon the double post. I just had some Vietnamese coffee today, and I think the 'something' in question is chicory.

Strangely, I never noticed the similarities between Vietnamese and south Indian coffee. They are made with basically the same piece of equipment, but finished differently. The Vietnamese method is to stir in some condensed milk. In India, they add a small amount of strong coffee to sweetened fresh milk, and pour it back and forth between two tumblers to make it foamy. Sort of a budget cappuccino.

I wonder why the slow drip filter thing they use doesn't overextract the coffee. The water is in contact with the coffee for quite a long time. Do they just use cooler water?

I drink it black. Always. Unless it's diner coffee, in which case I'll add a single creamer to it. I'm crazy, but I'm not suicidal.

As for espresso drinks: Americano for me. Fuller body than a regular cuppa joe and a richer taste. I'd go for shots of espresso, but part of the enjoyment of coffee for me is having something I can sip on for maybe 15-30 minutes. And I really can't do that with espresso shots. Also, not a big fan of sugars or milk/cream in my coffee, so lattes and anything of that ilk are out.

Huh. Most of the diner coffee I've had was weak and watery, not bitter; creamer would make it even less coffee-ish.

Weak and watery or burnt. Either way I'm gonna need something in it.

And I now have to taste test the coffee at work before I get myself a full cup. We've got some Sumatran that I like, and some other kind that tastes like cardboard. Burnt cardboard at that. And the Sumatran is rarely labelled as anything more than "coffee" like the other one. I work in a dining hall, so we always have dispenser-containers full of coffee.

My name would be rather ironic if I didn't like coffe wouldn't it.

I buy green beans from Sweet Maria's and home roast. I use a burr grinder and an aeropress to brew. If I'm brewing a full thermos I'll use a large french-press.

Is it bad that although i ADORE coffee and can't live without the caffeine, i hate everything else that is coffee flavoured (such as chocolates and cakes etc.).

The same flavour in the drink would make me swoon but in a cake would annoy me.

You should try coffee with almond syrup. I really like adding it to my coffee. Some people say i've got weird taste.

That's not all that weird. Amaretto creamer is pretty common. And considering Amaretto is an almond liqueur....

Ya, my Dad likes hazelnut liqueur in his coffee, which is a bit like amaretto but sweeter and less marzipan-y.

And then of course there are the drunken versions of affogato...

I like the Nespresso pods for home use, but coffee's evil and those pods make it too easy to drink too much!

Starbucks house blend is swill. I like my black Americanos strong and hot. The ones at Starbucks are neither of those :P Still a nice place to hang out, though.

I'm all about black coffee. It seems to me like cream and sugar are to a coffee like A1 is to a steak. A crutch to mask a bad one.

Although, I suppose I don't mind drinking a bad batch of black coffee either.

I feel about the same way. I typically drink my coffee black unless I'm drinking the coffee from the lounge or some that was bought at a gas station. Then I feel justified in throwing a cream and sugar in there.

I was just wondering if anybody every tosses a touch of salt into their coffee? I heard that it can take a particularly bitter cup of coffee and make it a little more manageable but if you don't toss too much in you don't taste any salt. Anybody have experience with this?

I prefer my filter coffee black, so in that sense I agree with you. But what about milky coffees like lattes, cappuccinos or macchiatos? They are all fantastic. I used to have lots of sugar in my coffee, probably to mask the bitterness, but now if I drink a really well-made latte (I like it with two shots and not too much milk) it tastes sweet even without sugar.

So my favorite coffee shop recently brought cold brew back after hiding it all winter (check them out if you are north of Portland, God this place has so much good coffee, I love it)

Holy shit, this stuff IS amazing. They have started selling a home cold brewer, and I am seriously thinking of picking one up. It's $40, and grind type supposedly doesn't matter. So I could probably get away with blade grinding fresh. WIN. As I understand it, I could always mix it with hot water if I did want hot coffee, although I honestly prefer cold a lot of the time.

for me, the Starbucks crap ruins the two appeals of coffee: its heat and its bitterness. If I want something cold and sweet, I will sit down and make some black tea.

If you buy their iced or blended crap or whatever, sure, i guess (never tried one, as I also don't want something cold and sweet when I get coffee).

Not defending starbucks here, but my experience with coffee at all those chain coffee places (not sure i've ever been to a starbucks... there are very few of them around here any more) is that they hand you a mug of slightly bitter (with no discernable flavour) boiling water. Coffee should not be served that hot, and it should have some damn flavour.

I've definitely had worse coffee than Starbucks but I've definitely had better, I even prefer the Nero chain which I find does a pretty well rounded simple cup of coffee. My ex-girlfriend actually preferred Starbucks coffee, but she had little taste, think she just liked some of the overly sweet and fatty chilled coffees which Nero didn't do.

If your ever in bristol, uk you should definitely check out extract coffee http://www.extractcoffee.co.uk. There is a little stall at the bottom of park street, between 8.30 and about 3 on weekdays and they sell the "best" coffee I've ever tasted. They import and roast the beans themselves, roasting twice a week and never letting you drink coffee that been ground more than 2 hours before. In my last office we could all tell who made the coffee that day by who made it :D we think it was mostly down to how hard they tamped it.

In fact the coffee and the work load at the time meant I drank far too much of it, I've recently "given up" coffee. Which means I drink coffee once a week or once a fortnight and make sure it's damn good and I enjoy buzzing for a day. I was having problems sleeping and being irritable and wanted to lower my cortisol levels (stress) and blood sugar levels (diet). I feel much better from it. I spent the last month in Greece and grew accustomed to drinking Greek coffee every morning. I'd like to start making it myself now that I'm back in the US. I have Greek coffee (gift from a friend before I left), and a set of cups and saucers, now I just need to get a pot for making it. But I'm having trouble deciding whether I should go with a more traditional copper pot like this, or a stainless steel one like this since I've heard stainless is more durable. Anyone have any suggestions or experience with this?

EDIT: I wound up buying one, so this part's no longer necessary. It's a brass one, durable like stainless, but more decorative and also heats up slower supposedly making a better cup.

I've tried Starbucks' brewed coffee in the States and it's not very good. The only reason I got it at all was because I had friends who worked there, so I got my coffee free. I wouldn't pay for it. When I was in Athens, the only place I could find Wifi was Starbucks. To sit down, you have to order something, generally. I ordered a Greek coffee as was my standard being in Greece. What I ended up with did not in any way resemble the Greek coffee I'd become familiar with over the past month. Rather than a puck of finely ground coffee at the bottom of the cup, it had a thick sludge at the top of the cup. And when I say thick, I mean I was actually wondering if the drinkable coffee was under that or if it was the coffee. I drink my coffee black. But coffee is usually a more brownish color. Looking at a cup that seems almost like it's full of pitch is not appetizing. Drinking the stuff was even worse. So apparently Starbucks can fuck up the definition of coffee in any country.

And on another coffee-related note, I got my ibrik today! My first day off of work for the semester is tomorrow, as will be my first attempt at Greek coffee. It arrived just in time. :)

I worked in Starbucks for something like 3 years. Never cared much for their brewed coffee, but my favorite espresso concoction was a Black and White Mocha - which does not exist on the menu. I'd have tall, soy (damn you lactose intolerance!), 2 pumps of mocha, 2 pumps of white mocha, whipped, and chocolate drizzle. It's a beautiful thing. White mocha's too sweet, regular mocha is too bitter, but put em together...!

As for coffee coffee, I tend to like the Latin American coffees. I didn't start drinking coffee until I was visiting my wife's family in Brazil and it was one of those "when in Rome" moments where everyone else was having it. I drink it black w sugar. I used to be a snob about what coffees I would buy to brew at home, but now I buy and love Dunkin Donuts whole bean coffee and grind my portion before each use.

I was given a half-pound of pre-ground Greek coffee before leaving Greece. I will be using that. In the future, I'm not sure. There are a few places around me that have machine grinders, so maybe one of those places? I know one of them has a Turkish/Greek coffee setting.

A hand grinder might be a good option (see earlier in this thread). Not the most efficient way to grind beans, but it'd fit nicely into the coffee-making ritual. Or you could even go really old school, and grind with a mortar and pestle. Either way should give you better results than asking someone else to grind them in advance.

You know, I don't think I've actually had good Greek coffee. I've lived in the middle east and visited Greece and Turkey, but that was all before I got into coffee. Greek restaurants here serve a version, but I doubt they do it justice.

I've never actually seen Greek coffee served in the States, but had heard of it. I might be able to find it in bigger cities, but nowhere around here. My first encounter with it was on the shores of Skala Eressos and I fell in love with it. Now auto-drip coffee seems too weak and espresso seems too bitter by comparison. And unfortunately those are my only options most of the time.

Oh man I got a box from my mom yesterday and it was filled with goodness, including 6(!!!) pounds of my favourite coffee.

Where I am, Jacob's instant is the fancy stuff, and as soon as my bottle of that is used up, I'm making myself a big, giant pot of what my mom sent. And will probably drink the whole thing right quick, depending on how much milk I have.

For the record, what she sent is Community Coffee, New Orleans blend.

Besides for waking up, is coffee a part of any other ritual anyone has? For example, whenever I meet with my co-writer to write music, I have to have coffee with me. It's as if I believe I won't be able to come up with anything worthwhile, or be able to play the piano/guitar unless I have my fuel.
