Now I want to have a barbecue. I was promised lots of grilltimes this summer, but our main grilling person is down with pneumonia, poor thing.

There was a time when the brisket would have appealed to me, even up to ten years after going veggie. I've learned by now, though, that the flavour of meat simply isn't interesting to me anymore. (I learned that by accident. Some coworkers told me about a "really delicious" lentil soup available nearby. When I tried it, it was bland and tasted weird. I realised that it was beef broth, very beefy, and that I didn't care for that taste anymore.)

Fifteen years of veggie-ism, sometimes lacto and sometimes vegan (depending on the year), have made me into an automatic veggie-preferrer now. If I were magically able to start eating meat again (it's restricted for medical reasons), I might go for sushi or summat, but I've simply lost the taste for much else.

That, and oh so many yummy things can be found in veggie-land.

Yes you can. You just have to soak the plank of wood for a few hours in water before grilling the fish. It does the same thing as baking it.

The wood and smoke also impart a subtle flavor to the fish. I had halibut grilled on rosewood once, divine. Unfortunately I haven't been around fish/wood/grill combinations nearly enough in my life.

Also, grilling on a plank is a practical solution for delicate fillets falling through the grill.
