How much coffee do people drink in a day?

Apparently, people like to eat.

Occasionally I will drink a cup with or after dinner as well. That is usually on the weekends, though.

considering a standard espresso unit is 1oz, that's... quite a lot of coffee.

It is not espresso, but drip brewed coffee. So, yes, a lot of water.

But drip coffee has higher caffeine than espresso, unless so thin it's the colour of tea?

Espresso has higher caffeine by volume, but a cup of coffee does have more than a shot of espresso, yes. My 32oz is just four cups of coffee all in a large container, which I sip over the course of a couple of hours. I understand 4 cups is on the high side, but not unusually so. Adding an additional 2 and a half cups a couple of times a week seems reasonable as well.

But maybe I'm diluting my self?

Is this something anyone else experiences? I'm wondering if it's some sort of placebo-effect, aka I think this will happen if I do this, thus it happens cause I think it. Only, I mainly think coffee is going to wake me up, which it doesn't in a way that I actually notice.

I'm weird about coffee. I probably on average drink maybe 4 oz a day or less. I usually have half a cup with a bunch of milk if I'm at the office, often using it as a replacement for a sensible breakfast. Sometimes I'll get iced coffee with cream in if I'm out and about, or a caramel macchiato (and then add more milk to it).

That said, this is more coffee than I used to drink. So uh. Yeah, I'm not a coffee drinker, but I pretend poorly fairly frequently.

1--3 cups per day. Occasionally more if I'm feeling crappy.

I got as high as 8--10 cups/day in college, with the result that if I was sufficiently decaffeinated to sleep at night, I would have a headache from caffeine withdrawl. Don't do that.

1-4 cups per day. Plus occasionally 1-2 cups capuccino.

I don't drink coffee much, like once a month at most, but one of my brother's friends used to drink coffee pretty much all the time.

In fact, he drank so much, his adrenal glands forgot how to make adrenaline. Apparently the doctor had never seen this before. Anyways, he's off coffee now, and his glands are back and working.

Nope, this isn't hearsay. He was in hospital and I went to see him and everything. His adrenal glands had shut down.

And it was determined that coffee was the cause?

Yep, too much caffeine. Confused his metabolism, more or less. No doubt it's much more complicated, but caffeine was decided as the cause.

Two cups of regular coffee. Flat white from Starbucks. I have a tolerance at this point.

My coffee habits have changes - recently I've started drinking pretty much a cup a day. I don't feel I super need it, nor do I feel it's very helpful to keep me up, but I like it as an activity (making the cup) and the time it takes as a break.

This is pretty much one of the reasons I love coffee, the ritual of making it. Most of my paraphernalia is "by hand," ritual as follows:

  • Put Kettle on the flame, with temp probe in the kettle
  • Measure out the correct amount of coffee into hand-crank grinder
  • Grind coffee(takes most of the time for the kettle to get to temp)
  • Set Pourover on carafe
  • fold filter so it will sit correctly in pourover, place in pourover (kettle will be at temp by now)
  • pour water into pourover cone, placed over carafe, to pre-heat whole system and dampen the paper filter
  • Measure correct amount of hot water into gooseneck kettle
  • pour out pre-heating water from carafe
  • put grounds into pourover filter
  • slowly infuse coffee grounds per proper method (I'm of the "slow spiral starting from the center going out" school of thought)
  • once fully drained, dispose of filter/grounds
  • pour from carafe to coffee cup
  • slip and enjoy

The whole process takes about 7-10 mins, and makes a lovely cup of coffee. I love the control I have over every step in the process, and I drink about 1-2 (10oz) cups a day; one in the morning, one in the evening.

This is my main method of coffee for one or two, but I also have an 8-cup french press if I have people over, as well as a moka pot for "stovetop espresso"

Something similar happened to a good friend of mine. He was drinking so much Diet Coke that he ended up in the hospital and has been off caffeine ever since.

On a work day I drink 2 shot of espresso at home and 3 or 4 cups of drip coffee during the morning. I don't drink coffee in the afternoon, except on Fridays.
On a Saturday it depends. I drink 2 to 4 shots of espresso during the morning. If I go to a pub I sleep a bit after dinner and then take 3 cups of espresso before I leave at about 2300.
On Sunday I don't drink coffee if I went to the pub on Saturday. My stomach is usually upset and if I go to sleep at 0400 - 0500 I need a reset for my biological clock so I can wake again on 0730 on Monday. If I have not gone to the pub I usually take 1 shot of espresso or so.
I react fairly strong to caffeine.
