Eating Sticky Cinnamon Buns Neatly

Postby Jorpho » Mon Mar 29, 2010 6:51 pm UTC

Cinnamon buns, or sticky buns, or whatever you might want to call them, are often a tasty treat, but I've never quite figured out how you're supposed to eat them neatly.

If you try to eat them with your hands, you end up with a sticky mess all over your hands, but frequently the only utensils available are of the hopelessly inadequate plastic variety, so there's not much choice.

Given their thickness, attempting to take a bite out of them directly inevitably results in sticky cinnamon topping or whatever all over your face. Paper napkins are woefully inadequate for the task of cleanup.

As far as I can tell, the only way to go about it is to privately throw yourself into the task with reckless abandon and then try to discretely cover your face while you make your way to the washroom for a proper wash-up.

Maybe I'm missing something here?

I think the point you're missing is that sticky fingers isn't a bad thing.

Well, they certainly preclude reading a book or typing while eating, but then it can be argued that multitasking detracts from the experience.

The sticky face is another matter. Making a mess of oneself is rather frowned upon in polite company.

Ok, maybe sticky fingers is problematic... but any company that will frown upon you having a sticky face after eating a bun is not company I want to be in. There's likely to be far too many sticks up bums and not in a good way.

This reminds me of a friend asking me how you're supposed to eat ribs neatly. My answer was "You don't."
More helpful answer. Look into portable utensiles (maybe from a store where you can get camping supplies). Either that, or grab lots of napkins.

This is the method I've found to work:

1. Take cinnamon roll/bun/sticky bun in hand. Hold with thumb and index finger on the sides, if icing has not dripped down.

2. Lick top icing off.

3. Curling back your lips, point teeth outward, take a bite.

4. Repeat step 3.

5. After awesomeness has been consumed, lick fingers.

6. Less mess.

If you want to be a prude, use a regular fork or knife. You can use a plastic knife and fork, but it may be tricky.

I use the plastic forks, sometimes two if I'm really bored.

Generally I just accept that I'm gonna have sticky fingers and I wash my hands after I finish eating it. Part of eating the sticky buns I guess! :) Same w/ ribs, although you can't help but get that all over everything unless you use a fork/knife.

My cinnamon bun with a plastic knife and fork method:

Usually they are rolled--if you unroll a section and cut it off, it can be eaten neatly even with plastic cutlery.

Ribs are a lost cause however.

I bet this is totally doable if you just get a skewer for the sticky bun.

Step 1 - skewer the sticky bun/cinnamon roll from within its bag or other container - should be doable without having hands contact the bun/roll at any point, in most cases.
Step 2 - remove bun/roll from bag or other container, using the skewer only.
Step 3 - hold skewer on either side of bun/roll.
Step 4 - take a bite of bun/roll. Repeat this step as needed.

This thread is useless without pictures.

I'd help out, but there's a language barrier. Are these like the Iced Spiced Buns (name varies depending on location) you can get in England?

This is one of the most common cinnamon rolls around here.
Spoiler:

Other types have caramelised sugar syrup instead of icing (brown sugar and corn syrup poured over the dough during baking).

I can't remember the last time I ate one away from home. I'm usually too intimidated by the enormous freakin' size of the ones you find most places. >.<

Hold bun wrapped in napkin in non-dominant hand.
With dominant hand unroll a section of bun.
Bite off section and enjoy.
Repeat.
Do Not grasp bun with out napkin!

Ah, so, like a kanelbulle, but with icing. You can eat those by tearing them up, but icing complicates matters.

Ribs, like mangoes, taste better when smeared all over one's face.

I just can't tolerate the old enough sugar to make your teeth hurt feeling anymore. I also like to taste the cinnamon and the bun.
