Awesome and win. Also it led me to go looking for the original again on YouTube - not only did I find this live version, I scrolled down and two xkcdians had already been there, which genuinely made my day

Sounds good to me, iMito. Just as long as the lines being assigned, doesn't mean we can't have more people trying.

That song is awesome :D.

Yeah, everything on the track is me. The guitars and bass are real, not sampled. The drums are sampled off my Motif XS. Everything is recorded and mixed with Cubase SX3, and mastered with Izotope Ozone 3. The boom-de-yada is 3 layers of me, panned left, center, and right, with a drum room reverb treatment to give it that background-punk vocal sound.

Pretty neat what you can do in an hour on a Friday morning. If anyone here is interested in home production, I can answer any questions.

Thanks! In addition to soundtrack, I can also handle the sound master, though I'd rather not have to edit everything together. Just a master track of video audio, and I'll mix in my soundtrack and make everything sound purdy.

Seeing as how the music is already up my point is moot but....

just in case any one thinks this is actually a good Idea:

For all the bandos out there.....we could send out some short of sheet music and have each person record at a defined bpm and overlay the tracks on to one another using some simple audio editing...I've always wanted to do some thing like that....but your versions amazing too......

I would gladly attempt to arrange this song if i got a list of instruments....just I'd have to wait till monday....

didn't mean to offend but yeah that version is PERFECT for this....just thought of a way to include more and more nerds.....

[edit] on second thought this sounds like a stupid idea...I'll just leave it up just in case any one wants to view my idiocy....k yeah songs amazing...[/edit]

We actually don't have a definite source of music yet. So all suggestions are welcome. (:

I call "I love your suffering" I have a 6 year old little sister, I'm home for the summer and I'm a classhole. I think I can pull this one off quite well if I can capture a bobcat.

Boom de Yada - or, Making a Movie

Postby Easton » Sat Jun 28, 2008 4:07 pm UTC

So, here is the earth.

No! Here is the idea!
I was making bread this morning, and was humming the discover channel ad song, and wondering how on (and off) earth they managed to get so many interesting people (among them Dr. Hawking) to make the commercial with them. And then I thought of how the XKCD one was more encompassing - a wider rainbow of geekiness was displayed in its scope; not simply science, but politics, awkwardness, romance, and more.
And there was the idea - why not make one? Get XKCDers to shoot a little clip (oh, so little) of them doing what it is that they love - baking, science, building trebuchets, capturing and realeasing otters and ducks - to fit into a larger compilation and a parody/tribute of both the discovery channel ad and Randall's comic. Bring it to life, as it were.

Thoughts?

Apologies if the idea has been had, I just thought I should make the suggestion.

Looking around with what I have, I can easily do the "I love transistors" and a "I love the whole world" map of the internet, so put me down for those.

To fit in as many people as want to be in, we should also accept submissions of people doing sufficiently xkcd/geeky things to go in at the end as the "boom-de-yada"'s trail off.

Can I get a (non-rickroll) YT link to the Discovery Channel ad? (I don't really watch TV.)

This is awsome, if we could get a bunch of XKCDians to make their own "I love..." clips, and then get you to do the music for each one, we could have possibly the best video in the history of all of the world.

The entire project's being done through the LJ Community. I'm not combining any more threads, personally... because that's too much for me to keep track of. However, if you guys would like to join in, the LJ community's here: http://community.livejournal.com/xkcd_boomdeyada/ and I'm going between this thread and the community, keeping tabs (if you want to post here, I'll make sure it gets to the LJ community).

For the intro, I actually wrote and recorded a slow, grandiose little piano bit, even though it didn't make the final cut.

Listening to it again, I may take another run through to clean up the vocal parts, write a better drum track, etc. Screaming guitar solos?

Maybe I should write a completely original xkcd theme song ala MC Frontalot's Penny Arcade theme. THEN I WILL GET TEH FURRY CHICKS YES?

Here's my VERY silly contribution to the Boomdeyada pile. (I also made a --slightly messy-- instrumental version so you could hear the vocal line notes.)

Let me know what you think-- suggestions are welcome. :D

PS Just to check-- are there totally separate videos happening at the xkcd forums and at livejournal?

I have a suggestion to make the transisitor panel slightly more interesting. What if it's a shot of someone bent over a workbench with a soldering iron, who doesn't even look up from their work, just sings the line, similar to the "egyptian kings" scene in the DC video?

For the /b/ panel (the messed up folks) one can go to the next Anonymous protest against Scientology and make some videos there. Also, I'm pretty sure you can make them to do "boom-de-yada". That would be epic.

And we can ask Cory Doctorow to do his panel. He probably will agree. Why not?

That's a pretty cool idea. Are you thinking just put in every different instrument you can? I don't have the resources or time to put together a video of one of the scenes, but I have a flute and can get a hold of a microphone.

That would be almost cheating, since we have people on the fora who actually go to these protests.
