I alternate between the two to perplex & annoy people who care about which way it should be pronounced. Where's my otter/duck?

This is why I pronounce "JPEG" as "jay-feg".

I didn't know that the P stood for "photographic" when I first discovered the format, whereas I just assumed that the G stood for graphics. Also I usually pronounce .jpg as "dot Jay Pee Gee", so even more reason to say "jay-peg". Likewise, I learnt about mp3s before I learnt about mpegs, which is the same P. The world is not about to start saying "jay-feg" any time soon.

I pronounce GIF as GRINFO for this reason. See what you did there was take two letters. It doesn't work that way. Like TH is just T unless you have a thorn to represent it under a single character.

Truth is it's pronounced with a hard G. Wanting it to resemble Jif... is like wanting ghoti to be pronounced as fish. Jif is pronounced that way because it's spelled that way.

I suspect you don't really pronounce it that way :)

Hehe.

I would love to see an animated GRINFO.GIF
GRINFOs are not always animated, you know.

For several years I pronounced it Heef. Because I was told it was pronounced that way by the person who first showed me it.

I always pronounced it Gif before that and Still to this day because nobody with an ear for anglophony would find "jif" an acceptable pronunciation.

Oh and in the list of comparable words, let's not forget gip (trouble or lippiness) and gib(explode into giblets) although even gib is oft said with the hard g.

Secretly google's endgoal with WebM is to get rid of the endless GIF debate. APNG tried, but it couldn't dethrone the GIF. (Of course I'm only comparing animated GIF, because I refuse to believe there's still a "static GIF" in existence, since JPEG, PNG and SVG have universal support and popularity)

I always thought it was pronounced with a hard g.

So did I until I was watching a doom let's play when the guy went on a rant and since then I can't say Gib I have to say Jib because the word makes me think of giblets.

Shouldn't that be "jay-fej"? Or else "jay-peej", either of those would Make Sense.

And I call it GIF. Duh.

I think it's an interesting sign of their wrongness that people who pronounce it "jif" have to misspell it to communicate how they pronounce it.

Also

This.

Huh? No, you pronounce the letters as they sound in the words they are abbreviating. "Group" has a hard "G", so "jay-feg."

<troll>At least that's the reasoning of the hard-G gif people. :-)</troll>

I debated putting <troll> tags on my first sentence in the previous post, but decided it was so blatant and obvious that tags wouldn't be necessary. My mistake. :P

Old thread, but:

Obviously the very best precedent would be the actual Old English word "gif" - predecessor to our modern "if".

Since 'g' is always palatalized before 'i' in OE (it'd be spelled "ġif" in modern OE orthography), the ORIGINAL correct pronunciation is therefore "yeef" or "yif".

(Seriously though - it's Gif. 'Jif' is just stupid for a variety of reasons.)

I pronounce it gif. The way it looks to me when I see the letters. The other way sounds like you were trying to say gift and got lost before the end.
