Just to throw some more grit into this discussion, I pronounce the Unix command su like "sue", not like "ess you".

I pronounce it sue-doe. But I pronounce "sudoers" as "sue-doo-ers". I may "correct" my pronunciation if I hear people around me actually say "sue doo".

Exactly.

Of course, I pretty much never actually pronounce the word. Mostly my fingers "pronounce" it, and they pronounce it "oger".

I always assumed that sudo derived from su, and that su stood for "switch user" or "substitute user". So, sudo is short for "have the substitute user do".

But no matter how much I try to remember that, I keep saying it as "pseudo" in my head, and it shouldn't be that big of a deal to me.

Should you also pronounce the u in sudo like the u in user, making it shoodoo?
I like it, but I'll say pseudo regardless.

I pronounce pseudo as /ˈsjuːdəʊ/ and the u in user as /ˈjuː/ so, yes.

If you stick an o on the end of an acronym, you relinquish all rights with regard to pronunciation.

SOOOooo...I'm curious - is the "pedestrian" pronunciation of Texaco, tex-a-cuh?

The difference there is that "do" is the full word in the acronym on its own.

As we're slightly necroed.

As a word: "sudo" as in "judo" (or "Ludo"). And the word "dew" is 'dyu', at first approximation and given that I'm too lazy to dig up yer'actual IPA symbols for that.

And "radar" is 'ray dah' mostly because 'rad ah' would be pronouncing something like "raddar", certainly once it has become a word in its own right, while I'm at it. But if you want to reduce it to "Ray Dee Aye Ar" (changing nothing in the first syllable) you can also capitalise it as "RaDAR" while you're at it.

I wanted to chip in that whenever I use "pseudo", it feels like I'm asking the computer to pretend I'm someone I'm not, and the situation is fake and temporary, in spite of the typically dramatic consequences.
