Great news! Stepping away from the keyboard has been good to you, I see. Hope your summer isn't being as hot as mine!

I stood too near the barbecue today at the hot dog stand, and exploded. True story.

A friend of mine greatly recommends this: http://well.ca/products/vega-sport-pre- ... 59288.html

Has anyone had any good luck with this, or similar "energy boost" products?

Hmmm, boss bought muffins for us! McDonalds carrot and bran muffin... eh, I'll try it. Hey, it's tasty!

*curiosity!*

*tappa tappa tappa*

Hmm... 440 calories, 17g fat, 66g sugar. Well. That explains a lot. There's my entire fat and sugar content for the day in a GOD DAMN MUFFIN.

Coupled with yesterday's revelation that my vegetarian foot-long sub from Subway has 1100 calories and 32g of fat, I may never eat out again.

I wouldn't use the term "luck", but they're pretty effective. I also took a scoop of jack3d once -- that I do not recommend. It was... too effective. I took it at like 7 pm. Couldn't sleep until well past normal bedtime, and had to pop some gum or else I'd be grinding my teeth.

For the record, caffeine is also a "natural, plant-based, performance-enhancing" chemical, which is quite present in the similarly descripted ingredients of that pre-workout. And a cup o' black or caffeine pill from the local drug store (even if halved) is a heck of a lot cheaper while being similarly effective. Also quickly digested carbs (read -- sugar -- a banana, some gatorade, etc) can work really well midsession if you have a looong workout session, just be mindful that they're caloric in nature so plan their intake accordingly and compensate by eating less at another point in the day.

Buh? My footlong of choice (spicy italian) decked out how I want it is 1160 calories.

http://www.subway.com/Menu/Product.aspx ... nuTypeId=1

Even going for the most calorie-dense options I crest at 1010, and thats with both avocado and mayo (and 60g fat, fwiw)

Just for my 20-30 minute workout in the morning. I don't start to wake up until probably an hour after I GET up, and I want to try and fix that.

Also... I am proud of myself. I went to Shoppers to grab some groceries and soup, because they're on sale this week. Also on clearance for up to 90% off is all of the Christmas chocolate, including my favorite things, Crispie Pops. Also on sale for half off is the ENTIRE cookie section. Also, all of the Pringles are on 66% off. Also, the cheese is half off.

I BOUGHT NONE OF IT! I ONLY BOUGHT SOUP!

And also regarding the sub: Footlong, falafel sub on whole wheat, with the cheese and light mayo. 32g fat, 48g protein, 30g fibre, 1100 calories.

falafel sub

Huh. I didn't even know such a thing existed.

But that's why Santa made 6 inches available as well (or you can order a footlong, eat most now and eat rest later!)

Grats on the shopping, btw :) Out of house, out of the stomach. But girl scout cookie season is soon upon us...

My wife bought me a box of thin mints last week. It did not even last until bedtime. >.<

I WILL NOT EAT THE COOKIES

Falafel subs are awesome! I can't just eat half, though... that's not enough food. Maybe I'll have half at 11 and half at 4... that's not to bad, if I break it up as two meals. Still only 5 bucks.

EDIT: There's an old adage: "The most comfortable bed is a 30 mile hike", or something to that effect. The upshot is, if you're tired enough, ANYTHING is comfortable, and if you're hungry enough, anything is tasty. Limiting my food intake (not RESTRICTING, just only eating sensibly-sized meals) means that, right now, I am eating Simply Minestrone, which is nothing but green beans and cauliflower and peas. I HATE green beans, cauliflower and peas. And this is delicious.

Say my body needs 2000 calories per day. I am toning back on what I eat so I'm down to about 2000. That is limiting. Toning back so I'm down to 1500 or less is restricting, to me.

You are leaving molecules of your ass behind you as you run. The more you run, the more molecules of your ass (yourassecules) are dropped along the way.

Mixed bag!

I've had an absolutely brutal cold for the last four days or so, and I've only run once in the last week. So... that's a boo. My weight has been dropping very slowly, however, I've been eating more while sick, since that's the conventional wisdom, or something like that... really, just any excuse to eat more. It has been all generally good for me, though, primarily meat and veggies. Only got fast food once. So that's a yay. Also, when my deck thawed out over the weekend I found that I still had some heavier plate weights, so with some careful shuffling around I've added 10 pounds to my Heavy and Light bar, which is definitely good for my strength training.

Total miles run in January: 65. Gotta pick up the pace there, but when it's actually WARM outside and I can run on the road again, I'll totally catch up.

And tonight is my final firefighter's evaluation, so I am trying to stay active and eat healthy and not be a sick sack of crap when it's time to jump out of a three storey building.

Ok, not running a half marathon in April.

...

For those of you who haven't been keeping up with my real life, I got offered a job. OFFERED a job. Out of the prospective field of places I had applied to, one of them wanted me enough to offer me more to work for them. It's a wierd feeling. ANYWAYS, I start in April.

It's eleven hours north. I'm in Canada, so you know that means business.

I will be going up in April, and my family will be following in July or August. Essentially, I am going to be on my own for four months. This is going to be a slice of fresh hell, both for my family getting on without me and for me being separated from my family, but... this also affords me a unique opportunity I've not had since the 90's: for four months, I'm going to be on my own.

No making 3 different breakfasts, 3 different lunches, 3 different dinners for the family. No more having to bed and plead and shift things around just to get fifteen minutes to work out. No more having to essentially SNEAK out of the house in order to use my punching bag. No more being pulled in four separate directions to solve everyone's problems. No cleaning up seven rooms a night, driving everyone to everything and spending an hour making sure they successfully transition from awake to asleep.

I'm going to go to work, and I'm going to come home... and everything else is up to me. I can stock the food I want to eat, I can work out whenever I want, and I can actually get more than five hours of sleep per night.

I've got four months to turn my body around.

Diet is going to be the most significant one, I think. When I lost a crapload of weight last year, I was essentially living off of vegetables, all-beef smokies and Diet Coke, seven days a week. I thought I was treating myself, until I saw the numbers on the scale go down. Gonna have to carefully plan out my food purchases so I don't go insane, but I'm seeing a lot of chili and sausage in my future, and salads.

So, in the last six weeks (the NF six-week challenge), I've only gone from 21 to 24 pushups. I had really thought I would have made more gains than that. Maybe it's finally time for more bicep work, though, since normally it's my shoulders that give out first for pushups, and now it was DEFINITELY the bicep / chest part that surrendered.

I GET A WEIGHT ROOM TOMORROW OF MY VERY OWN!

It could be the pectorals, but it's probably not the biceps. Biceps don't have much to do with push-ups:

See, that's what I thought, but that was the ONLY part that hurt after I did all those. I assumed it was the chest, but there was no soreness or exhaustion THERE, but... I dunno, I'm an unreliable narrator in my own body.

Weird. Was the soreness at the very top of the bicep, near where it attaches to the shoulder? If so, it could be the anterior deltoid or the pectoral which were sore; they tend to hang around that area as well. If it was the middle or bottom of the bicep, I have no idea. You may be sleep-curling.

I'm going to cross-post here for my next NF 6-Week Challenge.

Day 1 (Monday): Urf. Waking up was difficult, but after some coffee and a few minutes warming up, I was actually surprisingly limber. When I came downstairs my son was already rolling out of bed and stretching his legs out, getting some water. We did Workout A: Squats, Bench Press, Deadlifts. I ended up adding ten pounds to all of mine by the fifth set, so I'm already off to a good start! :D We did empty bar with my son for bench and squat, and bar +10 for deadlifts so the bar was actually off the ground. His bench press form started off terrible, but got pretty good by the fifth set, and his squat form was pretty good already since that's one of the major exercises he does for his arthritis. We just had to work on his lower back posture. His deadlift form is atrocious, though, he can't quite seem to get the hang of straightening his legs AND back at the same time, he does one or the other. Still, we got lots of time to work on it. Also, because he talks NON STOP, I ended up being 10 minutes late for work, but that's not that bad... it's a monday, I'm still virtually the first person here. :D He was excited the whole time, we worked out some good warmups for him on the punching bag, we talked MMA and UFC, I explained DOMS to him, I explained freeweights vs machines, stabilizer muscles, why form is so important, etc etc etc, and he seemed to really absorb it all well. His goal is to become stronger than me by the time he's 18, and I think that's a worthy goal. We're gonna work on more stepping-stone goals on Wednesday. I then explained that post-workout you need protein, so he made a chorizo-gouda-dijon sandwich and a glass of milk while I was in the shower (this kid LOVES the deli), and I'm gonna start stocking up on eggs since he loves to make scrambled eggs. Also, as a boost to my self-esteem, he mentioned many times that, from one year before, a) my belly was smaller, B) my shoulders were bigger, c) my biceps were visible when doing bench press and d) I seemed a LOT happier / less cranky. All of these are true, but it's nice to hear anyways. I explained that lifting is responsible for a lot of my belly going away, and he's very down about his own belly (he's maybe 10-15 lbs heavier than the average kid his age, and it really depresses him) so he's stoked that POWERLIFTING burns fat. He was told, by his DOCTORS, that he needs cardio to lose bodyfat, and he can't DO cardio because of his knees, so his doctors basically told him "You're stuck this way". Thanks, jerkasses. I WILL FIX HIM MYSELF.

That is awesome! I wish someone had taught me the lifts at that age.

Form comments, if you want them (you're probably already aware):
Spoiler:
On the squat, his knees are caving in rather than tracking over the feet. For that stance width, I'd straighten the foot angle a few degrees and cue 'knees out' more.
