the 'Aw shucks, I screwed up' thread

In balance to the I did good thread I though it would be a good idea to have a 'I messed up' thread. The reason for this is that from my basic knowledge of psychology, particularly research into bulimia (and to me my own experiences count for something) suggests that the ability to accept a small slip up or failure and keep going rather than accepting complete defeat (and in a bulimic case eating masses and masses) is highly important to the ability to keep up the good work.

In my case I've proved this to my self through giving up smoking through cold turkey and now eating healthy and exercising lots. I suppose the thread should really be named the 'I screwed up, but it's ok because I'm still going to keep going and I haven't actually ruined my good work yet' thread but it's a little too long and I never miss an opportunity to say 'Aw shucks' :D


to start, I went on a road trip yesterday so ended up eating petrol station food and when I got home I ordered a large dominoes because I was sooo shattered. Today though I bought some goggles to help encourage me to get up at 6 and go swimming.

Good job psykx, and it's good to keep things in perspective. I was thinking of creating a "Fit club confessional thread" also.

Today at lunch a coworker convinced me to finish his potatoes (we were at a restaurant). It wasn't too bad, but still. I should make sure to have a healthy dinner. In general though, the next few days will be tough because I'll be away from home and most of the available food will probably be greasy.

I've just had some potato waffles. They were calling to me. Not supposed to have potatos as am on a Low GI diet. Bleugh. But! I am making lentil and ham soup later, which will be healthy and yummy, and I'll have plenty to eat of the course of the week :)

I stayed up for too long a night and caught a cold and therefore can't exercise in a few days. This is really bad since I just had a weeks rest. :(

I bought Enter the Kettlebell by Pavel and started doing the program minimum. After working on it for about two weeks I decided to try the Rite of Passage. I have thoroughly humbled myself and am back on the program minimum. Also because of said humbling I messed up my elbow and have now had an extra couple of rest days on top of my original couple.

Oh dear. I am exceptionally good at the former and bad at the latter of those two things. If this was the Individual Comics section, I believe the correct phrasing would have been "get out of my head!".

I gained half a stone during a month due to my change in diet and increase in weight training.

I seem to have lost a quarter of it again :?

I ate pizza for dinner last night. And then had ice cream for dessert. And then a serving of French fries after that. And later I went to my friends' house and had a bit of cake.

I've had a bad weekend diet wise, I've eaten take away twice, eaten nearly no fruit and veg and I drank beer and whisky both nights. This was mainly due to the fact I was craving masses of calories to aid muscle growth from climbing two days in a row, I shouldn't have done it I almost definitely caused muscle damage.

Live! Right now! I'm finishing a box of chocolate-covered orange peels!

I know I shouldn't be buying these things but I do. Oh well, at least I shared with some people and it's a small box anyway. Salad for dinner?

That is why the book says you should stay on the minimum for at least a couple of months and to quote kettlebell safety 101: It's your fault :(


And to stay on topic: Back in january I could military press a 44 lbs kettlebell with the left arm while military pressing a 53 lbs kettlebell with the right arm at the same time. Then I changed my routine to be able to play basketball twice a week (or more often, hence, I've only trained once every other week for the past months). Now I have sprained ankle and I'm almost back to square one, strength-wise (i.e. that 53 pounder has stayed grounded for months now).

I took almost all of last week off, and only ran 7 miles and juggled twice :(

Y'know, it might be nice to see more people add the "and here's how I'm going to fix it" part. This could turn into the self-flagellation thread, otherwise.

I was doing good with going to the gym for a couple of months, but I've backslid. (Oh woe is me, amen.) I plan to start going again after I'm back from my upcoming trip. I doubt I'll have gained weight, but I'll certainly have noticed that I've lost strength and condition. That should be motivating enough.

I keep a very clean diet, but eat a 1/4 of a slab of cheese almost every night.

My weight rarely fluctuated before my knee injury, but in the past two weeks I've gained about five pounds! :o

I thought this thread would be more about nasty exercise-related incidents rather than calorie counting. Sigh ... now excuse my off-topic post, ok?

I've taken up various forms of bicycling over the years. I used to ride BMX. Stress on the used to. Apparently when you don't land right off a jump high enough to break the weld joints on your bike frame, it does interesting things to your knees. Yeah, I don't trust myself on a BMX anymore and went to road biking.

So I rode my road bike uphill through the grass to a field where some of the guys were starting ball practice. One of the guys quipped "Now let's see you ride straight *down* the hill!" That didn't sound like a bad idea. I knew the grass ended at the bottom of the hill in mulch, then dropped off a curb into a mostly empty parking lot. I planned for the curb, I could just pull up on the handlebars as I went off the curb, keeping the front wheel off the pavement just long enough for the back wheel to drop (so both hit the parking lot at once). Trouble is, I'd forgotten that the mulch had rotten / washed away so it was about 4" below the curb. Instead of dropping off the curb and neatly landing in the parking lot, I ran straight into a sharp 4" high concrete ledge that was the back of the curb. It bent both rims -- the front one was knocked in by almost exactly the 4" height of the curb -- and of course blew both tires. The guys came running after the sound of 110PSI road tires exploding to see me in the parking lot, riding it out to a stop on bare metal rims that were no longer round, and laughing my head off.

I guess I might as well pull out the old BMX again (well, get another ... that thing isn't remotely rideable), since it seems no matter what I ride I'm going to ride it like a dirt/stunt bike.

Last shopping I bought a bag of two bite brownies and ate them all in a little over one day. For the past three days I haven't done anything physical just updated my blog. Boy, this is depressing; I could go on.

I should get a notebook and write down all the good things and bad things I've done each day.

Maybe go for a walk? Right now? Something to ease into ...

I've been trying to limit myself to one caffeinated drink per day as I'm going to need my sleep soon (school's starting in a few weeks, blech.) I've been doing great for the past month, but I've been doing some extreme PvPing in World of Warcraft (and coding, lots of coding) and to keep me going I've had twice as many caffeinated drinks in the past week than I'd hoped to... Oogh.

EDIT: I blame Blizzard for adding XP to battlegrounds...

The gym I go to has been closed since a week today, so I've had to miss two sessions.

Anyways, everything was fine, apart from the bench press, which I screwed up. I did the sets too fast and then failed on the 4th one when I tried to put the weight up.

I screwed up for the last 3 weeks. Drove across the country (and eating what you would assume from that), and too transient since I got here (I know, excuses excuses) to work out. Ran a bit today, though, and was reminded of how good it feels. So ... more running, and maybe some yoga, in my immediate future. No lifting till I find the gym on base or till my household goods get delivered, though.
