Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
I'll do the calculation later.
Tid bit - When I doubled (Almost tripled) my ride to work, I thought, pft what I do now is SO FREAKING EASY this wont be a big deal.
Its 32 degrees out and 15 miles a day is eaither going to get easier or much worse. I'm thinking easier.
Just keep peddling, just keep peddling, just keep peddling peddling peddling.

You're telling me. I have lost 3 pounds I'm not even trying to lose. I think it's the sweating and the up hill biking.

That's from my newly re-started "half hour of power"... It's taken me a long time to adjust to the tiredness from my shift pattern at work enough to get this going again, and in two weeks I'll be redundant, and then starting a job with normal hours a month after that...

It's not much, but my commute to and from work yesterday was 2 miles each way, so...
2,675 + 4 = 2,679
No bike ride today, though, since my husband and I are going to the store after work. When I have to skip riding, I find that I really miss it.

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
Holy crap can I join in? My parents've been nagging me to get back on my bike since forever!
Only problem is I don't have people to ride with except at weekends there's a friend but he has a rusty bike so we can only go like, 20m at a time. (miles, not meters!)
If I DID get a friend to go along, though, would that mean I could submit his score, too? So, like, if we went 20 miles I could put in total 40 miles?
I once cycled 105 miles once (I know that's probably not much to some of you really enthusiastic bikers but to a fat nerd like me it's one of my life achievements - I often used to do 20-50m rides though and my 2nd longest ride was about 72m) but I'm guessing I can only put cycles I've done today or very recently in the thread? (Else I could list as many rides as I could remember and probably give you another thousand miles!)
Do we get a prize if we win???
I totally need to get fit... I've said it before but joining the forums was possibly one of the best things I've done all year! These forums are fantamazilicieriffic! (Although they will prob account for quite the increase in un-productivity too...)

Soon friends. It's still not quite light enough out to ride more than ~40 minutes in the evenings when I get home after work. Plus I'm out of shape after an off season of being lazy.

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
just as a general asking type thing ( i do believe its officially called a poll, but less official than that)
should we allow motorcycles into this category, or make it a different thread?
i am getting into motorcycle riding a bunch and it would be an interesting thing, but it doesn't really apply to the "fit" mantra of this category.
thoughts?

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
Oh jeez, when I was commuting 9.5 miles a day by bike in 20 degree weather all winter I could have been counting it toward something?? Damn.
I will start with today I suppose. Adding to the last number I see in this thread to my 9.5 miles today, I get 3572.39.

Ugh, seems my last post her was a year and a half ago... I have been cycling since then, quite a lot too, but somehow it doesn't feel right adding those in retroactively (for one, it would almost double the mileage of this thread...)
So... starting today... (a well-organised cyclosportive)
3578.39 + 59.67 = 3638.06

i have no problems with retroactive posting, provided it is not made up figures, if you have actual, confirmable miles, feel free to throw them in.
there is no million dollar prize for the person to push this thread over 10,000 miles, only a golden raptor statue.
also, weekend activites of going to the mall adds another 6 miles so
3638.06 + 6 = 3644.06

Got quite some riding in over the weekend, despite a lingering case of the sniffles/coughs. Sunday weather was very nice, that's when I did the 41 miles (and then in the afternoon I went to see a cycling race, for good measure).

Runkeeper has been bugging me lately and I can't tell if it's the app itself or another app on my jailbroken iPhone. I'll get to about 15 miles and the app will crash, and then it will crash every five miles or so after that point. Luckily, when Runkeeper crashes, it simply pauses the activity in progress, so I can resume the activity once the app is opened back up.
Still, I'd rather not have to pay attention to my phone the entire time I'm riding. I'd rather pay attention to the cars that are trying to run me over.

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
Turns out it's both a bug in Runkeeper and a battery usage monitoring app I installed a few weeks ago. The latter was exasperating the bug's effects in Runkeeper. After uninstalling it, Runkeeper only crashes once, but it's usually not until 25-30 miles or so.
Also, 4021.4 + 5.53 (remainder of Wednesday) + 11.16 (Thursday) + 30.92 (Friday/Saturday) + 34.58 (Sunday) + 6.62 (so far today) = 4110.21 miles
According to Runkeeper, last week was my most productive week cycling yet, with a total of 138.6 miles.

Almost 100 miles over the weekend, despite strong wind. On the 47.6 mi route (saturday) I battled headwinds on a long and exposed causeway with a lock complex and bridge in the middle. Struggling uphill and even struggling downhill. Sunday was nice, I rode to my sister's house, hung out there for a bit, took my niece (5) and nephew (3) for a spin around the block, then cycled back home.

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
I went on a ride a couple months ago, where I went uphill for ten miles in hopes of coasting for a long time on the way down, only to hit a headwind the entire way downhill. I was going faster up the hill than down the hill, and I had to pedal downhill just to stay upright.

Re: BIKE 10,000 miles
This wasn't quite as bad, but as I was reaching the top I shifted up, expecting to pick up some speed going down. Turned out I had to shift back to the gear I was in for the climb... just didn't have the energy to power down. In retrospect I maybe should have done the ride in the reverse order, but that would have meant that I had to do another "climb" straight into the strong wind, now I had a tailwind which made it super-easy.
Hopefully in a month from now I get a chance to ride in the Ardennes with a friend (prepping for a bike vacation in Tuscany later this year). He said he'd take me up the Redoute... From what I've gathered, it has a 17% gradient at one point, all I know is that last year I came across a 16% gradient in England (Crawleyside Bank, for anyone who's done the C2C) which I had to walk...

4263.66 + 9.1 + 9.1 + 15.2 + 40.5 = 4337.68
Yesterday's ride was awesome. I had taken the afternoon off and put in the 40 miles. Went north, across the river, some very nice roads there:

Only this road got very interesting a few miles on, when I met a big piece of farming equipment, almost as wide as the road, with all kinds of pointy things sticking out. The dike was narrower there, so there was a very steep (steeper than shown here) dropoff right next to the road (on either side). Managed to squeeze past though. Oh, and thanks to favourable winds I broke a lot of PR's on the 2nd half of this ride. Go me!

Beautiful indeed, but it's also a very flat (the only meaningful climb reasonably near me is a tunnel underneath a river... and that's still only a short one) and especially open landscape. This means wind and lots of it if you're unlucky. Fortunately about 15-20 miles to the southwest the landscape changes a bit, less open and a bit more rolling (but still predominantly flat...)

4337.68 + 21.34 (rest of Monday) + 36.01 (Tuesday) + 11.77 (Wednesday) + 11.29 (Thursday) + 29.24 (today) = 4447.33 miles

4447.33 + 124.27 (for the whole weekend) = 4571.6 Yay for long weekends
