sober.

I don't think I've ever done intoxicated chins/pulls...

1411 + 18 = 1429

On the subject of weights -- is a backpack with some plates admissible, or is the belt configuration ideal? Curious for both dips and chins.

Two sets 28 extra pounds.

I just put the weight in a backpack. I have no idea if it's how you're supposed to do it, but it works for me. Just be careful when you get off the bar, the weight might try to hit you on your lower back.

I've used a belt, improvised from some nylon straps they had lying around at the gym. Worked OK up to 45lb, but I should get a proper belt.

2 sets 28 pounds. Yikes, I seem to be regressing. Maybe I need more than 2.5 days for recovery.

Lost a bit of weight; this is screwing with my barbell lifts, but I'm taking the opportunity to have some fun with chin-ups.

Same here

I'll join you all:

1863 + 63 = 1926

several sets of close-grip, hopefully eventually working up to one-arm pull-ups.

1963 + 2 = 1965

And a pullup question. It seems grip is a huge factor for me, since I can do them at the firehall on the smith machine, which has rectangular steel bars. My grip is totally different. I tried it outside on a round bar, and, yeah, couldn't do it. What the hell? What muscles do I need to work to fix THAT?

You could do double-overhand-grip deadlifts, or hang from a bar for time. If possible, get some gym chalk when you're trying to do pull-ups on a smooth bar. If necessary, use straps for some sets; that way you can still enjoy the benefits of chin-ups while your grip catches up.

Just got myself a door-frame bar to get in on this - seems harder than on outdoor kids climbing equipment somehow. Anyway, 1965 + 30 = 1995

Deadlifts without straps, farmer walks... Anything where you grip a bar and have a hard time holding onto really. It's a pure grip issue. I can't hang from my pull up bar with one hand but find it easy to do the same on a construction site scaffold; same thing really.

Not sure if it's okay to post questions here, but - does anybody have suggestions for how to do pull-ups when not having a pull-up bar? I'd really like to learn how to do 10 in a row, just for the hell of it (tried it for the first time a few weeks back, could do 4 at the most), but back home I don't have access to a gym or similar place. A friend suggested a doorframe, but I can't seem to grip it well enough.

Easiest way is to get one of those bars that fits in a doorway. They can be pretty cheap.

Another option is to go to a park. They often have some sort of bar or something you could use.

Another option is to install rings on a stairway. You'll need a good, sturdy place to hang them. If you don't want to buy rings, you could probably make a DIY version out of chain from a hardware store. Maybe slip some bicycle inner tubes or something over the part that you'll be holding.
