2011-12 Applications Poll

Postby Bakemaster » Mon Oct 25, 2010 11:08 pm UTC

The season for college applications is once again in full swing—where are you applying, and for what? Take a minute to fill in the poll, and then post the specifics if you feel like sharing.

You can select up to six options, to accommodate those who may be applying to both Master's-level and Doctorate-level programs and/or applying to different programs at different schools. Please select only those programs that are your first choice major on at least one application; don't include second-choice majors, minors, or emphasis areas, but DO make two selections if you intend to double-major in two different poll categories. OOPS: ALSO YOU GUYS: As per some discussion in the thread on the first page, if you're completely undecided as to your major, feel free to leave it out. If you're undecided between a few likely candidates, use your own judgment about whether to select them in the poll or not.

I didn't include categories for sarcasm or romance, but if anyone finds a school that offers programs in either of those areas, please let us know!

Anyone applying to a Doctorate-level program straight out of undergraduate school? Last year I met a young man who had been accepted into the Doctoral program at Harvard Business School right after finishing his undergrad. I can't remember if he was going for a DBA or a PhD. Very impressive.

Might it be possible to have an option for "Undecided"? Not everyone knows what they want to do at the moment.

The poll's open until April. If you're applying for 2011-12, you're going to have to decide by then, aren't you? Until then, you can vote how you like - think of the instructions at the top of the poll as suggestions or requests rather than rules. It's not like I could even enforce them if I wanted them to be rules, after all. So if you don't know which program yet, don't pick a program. When you narrow it down to a couple programs, maybe come back and put them in; or wait until you actually apply. You can alter your vote in any way until the poll closes.

Well... not necessarily. Speaking purely from the undergraduate platform, there are numerous programs that allow you to go in with an undeclared major and not have to choose until the end of your sophomore year.

But I understand your logic. It makes sense and I suppose that I can always wait to vote completely.

Good point; I had forgotten about undeclared majors. I hesitate to add an option for that though, because I'm not sure it brings anything to the poll, which is aimed at finding out what areas people are actually pursuing; plus every time I adjust the poll it will erase all existing votes so as a rule I'd like to keep the original options if they work well enough.

I'll be graduating high school (US) after the 11th grade, with quite a bit of college credit under my belt as well.

Applying as a freshman to undergraduate programs in science/engineering. When I have to choose, I'm indicating Computer Science. But I think I could ultimately end up studying some form of engineering, or physics, instead.

I'm actually in college already through a program my state has that allows me to get both high school and college credit at the same time, but since I am a senior this year I voted anyway. As far as the poll goes, I am going into physics and math, likely with a double major.

Oh dear, colleges... Early apps for most people due this coming weekend.. that submit button on CommonApp is just so very intimidating and final and what-if-there's-a-typo??

Haha anyhow, I'm applying as an undergrad at several schools, leaning toward the math and sciences, but NecklaceOfShadow mentioned, I'm undecided for the most part. I'm not sure if I want to go into Natural sciences or something somewhat more mathy. Engineering seemed like a good middle ground, but it also seemed very not-a-middle-ground when it came to the workload and difficulty. Oh dear..

I'll be studying mathematics as an undergraduate at the University of Maryland at College Park as a transfer student. I couldn't (in a real world) be happier.

I'm applying to one program- an MBA in nonprofit management from the college that I work at (making the whole shindig free). If I don't get in, then I'll hold off a few years because there's no need for me to start paying for it now. :P

I'm between focuses in "sustainable development" and "social and environmental impact" so I need to have a chat with some of my buddies up there to get some guidance.

I am just waiting for my SAT scores on thursday. Once those are in, I can send off my last application - MIT.

I'm applying to PhD programs in computer science (AI/computation modeling of cognitive processes). Taking the GRE on Saturday. I'm still a little nervous about the whole application process, but it's pretty exciting. Honestly, after finishing my undergrad I had no intention of ever going back to school, but here I am!

If you mean undergraduate/pre-med, probably Natural Sciences. If you've already finished that and are now applying to medical school, probably the best choice would be the last category for other programs not mentioned. But you can choose whichever category you think works best.

I'll be leaving my (US) high school behind in June, hopefully heading on to get a degree in Engineering (Material Engineering or somesuch). Not certain I'll end up going, but probably.

I need to stop messing around on the internet and actually finish MIT's application. Considering that tomorrow's the last day that would be a good idea POSSIBLY MAYBE? The good news is that I got the subject tests back just in time; they were actually good, unlike what I was expecting.

Possibly majoring in computer science or either computer or mechanical engineering, with a minor in physics?

I'm applying to 13 different schools, so I have applications with 5 of the major options listed above listed as my intended major. I basically have a list of about 20 and chose them randomly at different schools.

What led you to make that decision? Were your choices truly random between schools, or did you think at all about which schools excelled in which areas?

Not so much a university as an internship this summer: a two month study looking at the social dynamics of spotted hyenas in Kenya.

The latter. But still, I have quite an array of potential majors. I really have no idea what I want to do with my life.

Results so far look pretty much how I expected. Even 2:1 split on undergraduate versus graduate applications. I am a bit surprised that there are only two votes for Language or Literature though, with the amount of attention Randy gives to those topics in the comic.

I'm throwing around the idea in my head of transferring from University of Illinois to University of Texas. I love the department at Illinois but I'm not finding my college experience to be all that fantastic and I'm paying too much to go out of state and not be completely satisfied.

I'm applying to University of Colorado, Colorado State University, and University of Texas. UT's my top choice, but I'll probably get rejected. I think I'm gonna go to a community college and transfer in after a year.

@Durin I did my undergrad at U of I. It's a fantastic deal (great price for a great school) if you're paying in-state tuition. What are you studying? What are you hoping to get out of the "college experience" that you aren't getting now?

That said, I'm currently applying to U of TX (among other schools) for my PhD.

Yay for Math/Physics double majors. From what I hear, lots of people consider it at first but then drop one or the other. In fact, one of my friends here has already decided against a math major with physics.

I, however, am having a great time doing a double. Best of luck to everyone applying!
