Dissertation Distress

So I've just finished writing my second dissertation (long story), and as I searched through my hard drive for any bits and bobs that I might have missed before sending it to be bound I found this:

Everyday I acomplish less and less,

I really wish I was instead obsessed,

My lack of progress is leading to distress,

I have this funny feeling in my chest,

The doctor says my liver is a mess,

I've probablly inhaled lots of THF

All I know is my dissertation makes me want to Eff

and eff and eff and Blind

...

You Know, I Think, I'm going out my mind,

The dimethylformamide i can't find,

I'd quaff some IMS if I didn't think that I'd go blind,

I never can get authorisation forms signed,

And now i'm really in a bind,

...

Ooooooooooh oh, and my parents love me,

Ooooooooooh oh, and my girlfriend's lovely,

Ooooooooooh oh, and I missed the rugby,

Ooooooooooh oh, at least [Tutors Name] is friendly.

Written last year during the process of compiling my first dissertation (again, long story); I just thought I'd share it...


Anyone else having a distressing (or stressing) Write Up period?

Not a dissertation, but a sort of final exam (implementing a software project at work that threatened to suck us all straight into hell).

I made myself learn the words to the Portal song so I wouldn't be driven mad _{quite as quickly} by humming the same couple of lines over and over again. For about two or three solid weeks.

"Now these points of data make a beautiful line
And we're out of beta, we're releasing on time
So I'm glad I got burned
Think of all the things we learned
For the people who are still alive."

(Note: project was not done on time. Well, it almost was, but the first implementation caused the company's accountants to nearly soil themselves.)

Anyone else having a distressing (or stressing) Write Up period?

When I can finally move on to the writing stage, I am sure I will have no distress or sadness. This "let's just finish a third paper, we're close, just work hard" phase, that is the trouble phase.

Horses for courses... I quite enjoyed the "we can definately finish all the research aims in this newly massively reduced timescale" push, at least I was doing something when I was still in the lab... Though I got my bound copies back yesterday, I still can't believe that people actively wanted me to produce a book-like document and give it to them.
