I haven't read the comic, but the wikipedia page didn't even mention air whales. Want to explain what it is?

also: yay i got pie!

The Maxx is about this purple homeless guy in a mask whose reality changes from real reality to a mythical australian outback reality. He's friends with a freelance social worker. There is a serial rapist named Mr. Gone who spoke with small underlined vowels in the first few issues who commands an army of tiny sightless monsters who are stronger in real life than in the outback. The comic gets real fucked up.

You may be able to find some of the MTV TV show here but seriously the comics are better.

EDIT: And Air Whales are blimps when The Maxx sees them in australian outback vision.

From the Comic Book thread:

I have issues 1-12, 14, 21 and 25, as well as every MTV-produced episode on AVI (which is basically just scanned artwork from the comic, with only some of it put to motion). Maxx FTW.

Yay, more fans!

I have this really old Darker Image comic book with The Maxx, Blood Wulf, and Death Blow. I have only read that one little part but I really like the art and it certainly seems interesting; I would definitely pick up some issues if I knew a comic book store around here.
pollywog is awesome, that is all.
Addendum: Sethicus is also cool to the maximum.

Akira: i prefer monster black-man cocks.
Hoags: It's getting all 2vreks1CAN in here

Trust me, you ain't gonna find it in a comic book store. I've NEVER seen it in a comic book store. I had to get this batch off eBay.

Well then I guess I am lucky to even have this.
Edit: I just found out that this was the first appearance of The Maxx, that is pretty cool.

How much did it cost you off of ebay anyways?

$20 :) He didn't know what they were worth, and figured it was just a crappy independent comic.

I found one Maxx in a bargain bin in a comic store in Edmonton, so it IS possible... just not easy. Also, since the cartoon is 99% just cells of the images from the comics, the cartoon is a very respectable facsimile.

It's in one of Erie's local places (Books Galore) but you have to ask the guy behind the counter for it special because they keep it in the basement.

Nice. I suppose it's surfaced in hardcore comics stores. Comics about rape, murder, and repressed childhood memories don't make it to the front of the rack, though.

I must have an awesome set of comic book stores :P We've picked up volumes 1-5 of the trade paperbacks, and we've got a nice set of early single issues as well :D Maybe we're just awesome.
I have a secret to share with you.

I would love to get a chance to read it as well. I've recently become a fan thanks to MTV having 12 episodes of it up. As I understand it the comic goes into greater depth on the connections between characters, but that's all I know thanks to my desire to not spoil it.

When I was doing a little research, I found out that the art style came about during the Anti-hero* of Comics. Apparently the creator wanted to lure readers with The Maxx's character design, then force them to read something intelligent.

*The time period where Superman died, Venom got his own series, Simmons sold his soul and became Spawn, and Marv charmed us as his body count in Basin City grew.
