Seconded, Rice Boy is amazing.

Almost all the comics I read were found linked to by other comics.

Some that haven't been mentioned already
Pictures for Sad Children (in particular, Stevie Might be a Bear Maybe deserves special mention)
Octopus Pie

I think both those artists had webcomics before these, but I can't remember now.

Awkward Zombie is new-ish, and I think it's cute.

I can't remember where I found this, so I appologize if this is redundancy, but Fleep has math awesomeness.

Furthermore, this was unexpected. Has that been mentioned on the forrums yet?

The only webcomic that is even worth reading that still updates is The Perry Bible Fellowship.

You can make your own comics at stripgenerator.com. And you can post them and read others. Several creative people have some regular strips in there. FUN

Good heavens, how can people not like Achewood? I stumbled across it a wee while ago and spent hours reading it, I just loved it, really, loved. It's so sweet, and funny, and c'mon...being possessed by Billy Idol...what's not to love?!?!

I guess not everyone likes the occasionally surreal humor and meta-humor used in the comic. I kinda' like it but haven't yet really bothered to look at most of them, but I see them posted in fora and like them.

EDIT: Why the hell am I quoting the post right above me? That just takes away the usable space.

Has no one mentioned PhD Comics yet? If you are/were/or are ever planning to become a grad student this should be required reading. I follow that, Questionable Content, and our favorite four letter non-acronym comic regularly, and check up on Penny Arcade every month or so.

I had forgotten about Married to the Sea; it was worth reading the thread just for that reminder. I also recommend Queen of Wands for people who want something that's finished, but hilarious.

Whoever mentioned Questionable Content, I simultaneously love and despise you.
I started reading at 1p yesterday and finally got caught up at 9.30p. I accomplished nothing at work and managed to immerse myself.
I will say the experience was comparable to watching an entire season of 'The Office' in one or two sittings, though... complete dousing of wonder.

Amazing.

Nah. It's not as funny as it used to be, but Questionable Content still rocks my socks. I don't think we can say it's overrated until something drastic happens. If Jeph jumps the shark and people continue to say, "zomg! QC roxors!" then yes, we can say it's overrated. Until then, however, i shall continue to think it's cool.

It's fantastic. The characters are so well realised, the stories so imaginative. The dialogue is very appealing and the artwork, while minimal compared to that of other webcomics, is so effective. Onstad draws the most hilarious expressions. I think it is by far the best webcomic I've ever seen.

That doesn't mean I don't like xkcd, though. It still stands head and shoulders above the other webcomics mentioned here.

Nazi High was also a very funny comic, unfortunately, it died a horrible death. Anyone here happen to have read and maybe gotten bored one day and downloaded them all to your computer? I did once, but they're long gone...

Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal is the funniest one I've come across recently.

Other than that;
Perry Bible Fellowship
Penny Arcade
A Softer World
VG Cats
PHD Comics
The Warehouse
Cyanide And Happiness
Dinosaur Comics
and PVP.

I'd say SMBC, PBF, PA and Dinosaur Comics are my favourite ones out of that lot. I also regularly go through the Calvin And Hobbes archive and have never found anything better.

Excellent taste.
Really am I the only one here who think CAD sucks some major balls? The art hasn't improved noticable in several years, the humour is usually obvious or non existant, the story archs are usually shitty, there is no character development and the whole thing just stinks of being a geek fantasy, ie Tim Buckleys fondest pipedream.

Postby EdgarJPublius » Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:01 am UTC

when I middle click on the folder with all my webcomics, a little message pops up that says 'Warning, firefox is about to open 68 tabs, this could cause the browser to slow down considerably, are you sure you want to continue?' and I click yes.

And this is after I just finished cleaning out the ones that weren't updating or weren't entertaining anymore.

I won't go through all of them, but the notable/espescially good comics are:

Schlock Mercenary: A funny, highly entertaining space opera that hasn't missed a daily update in it's entire 7 year run.

Girl Genius: A Funny steampunk comic published back in the eighties/nineties by the extremely talented Foglios beng released a page at a time three days a week to the web as a marketing ploy (that by all accounts is working) for the paper editions.

Buck Godot: Zapgun for Hire: The same as Girl Genius except replace steampunk with retro-space opera and funny with even funnier.

Starslip Crisis: The hilarious adventures of the dimension shifting Warship-Museum Fuseli, bringing the cultural artifacts of Earth to the tragically uncultured alien civilizations

Gunnerkrig Court: a dark, highly stylish comic about a high-tech boarding school in a fantastic world

Friendly Hostility: That's about all I can say about that.

OBviously quite a bit got left out, including most of the 'serious' webcomics I read, but also a lot of stuff that was already mentioned.

I do have a felling my list is about to get a bit longer though.

I once was into bitter sarcastic comics.
Like Pearls Before Swine and Dilbert.
Later I turned to clever ones - like xkcd and Cat and Girl.
Cat and girl, is actually quite nerdy in itself, just like xkcd. The only difference, it seems, is that xkcd leans towards math, CS and natural sciences, while C&G - towards humanities and arts.
Confession: I do not actually understand approximately 80% of C&G's content.

achewood is probably one of the best comics ever.

"penny arcade" is a bit too esoteric at times.

i never liked "questionable content."

i used to like "something positive" but it got boring.

i adored "purple pussy" but the author ended it :(

... see, it's comments like that that have kept me from reading Achewood. It's like you're saying "Hey, SexyTalon! Know those comics you enjoy and think keep getting better and better? I think they suck! And those comics you find annoying and repetitive? I love them! Also, Achewood! Woo! Our tastes are completely different which means you'll not like Achewood, no matter what!"

I still read CAD, but I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep it up. I'm also about to drop Dinosaur Comics. DC tends to have a problem of making me read way too much for such a weak punchline.

I.. edited your post to show the comments I disagree with. Everything I quoted can be pretty much reversed to get my opinion of it. Something Positive has gotten better as time goes on. Dinosaur Comics is annoying and repetitive. Penny Arcade is pretty much something I'd show as an example of "Things that are not esoteric. Not even a little."

Agreed.

I've never really followed any web comic before last summer. Then by some crazy coincidence I found XKCD and Nothing Nice to Say the same day. I have since followed them on a regular basis. NN2S is great if you get the jokes. His San Antoino Rock City was really good too.

matter of opinion that should have nothing to do with yours regarding a different comic.

if you are referring to the fact that each comic has the same panels, i think its great that they thought outside the box like that.

SexyTalon wrote:Penny Arcade is pretty much something I'd show as an example of "Things that are not esoteric. Not even a little."

well if a non-gamer were to read penny arcade, he/she would have no idea whats going on, dont you think? even i dont know what they are talking about sometimes.

i think people shouldnt assume a comic (or anything for that matter) has to follow a specific form. many people expect a couple of panels to set up for the punchline. THAT gets repetitive and boring. achewood and dinosaur comics at times break free from this form, and remain humorous in doing so, which is why i like them and would recommend them.

... opinion has everything to do with it on this. Your opinion of X, Y, and Z is that they are good. You dislike A, B, and C. You also like N. I do not like X, Y, and Z, while I enjoy A, B and C. I am unfamiliar with N. It is highly likely that I will not enjoy N based on what is known.

Were the roles ever reversed on Dinosaur Comics, I might enjoy it more. As is, it's the same formula over and over and over. At least what I've read of it... granted, I think I read up to mid 2005 before I got bored and quit.

As far as Penny Arcade goes... you're right. It's a gamer comic. I just don't see the content as esoteric at all. Now, if it were about high level raiding in Everquest.. I could see how you'd be right. As is, I just don't find it esoteric. Your mileage may vary.

but what is known is other opinions, and what youre saying is "because you like X and dont like Y, im going to say Z sucks because you like it."

if by formula you mean panels, well, i personally think its genius. otherwise im not sure whats so repetitive.

but take this one for instance:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/11/29

i first read it not knowing what the hell was going on, and being the hardcore gamer that i am,after i read all the gaming blogs i understood it. but to a casual or not-so-hardcore gamer, they wont know whats going on. im saying penny arcade is good when it sticks to gaming on the surface, but once they start diving deeper into the gaming world it gets a bit confusing.

You're missing what I've said somehow, and are starting to put words in my mouth, so I'm just going to drop it.
