The Ever Changing Mafia Poll [Q5 from Adam H]

Postby Snark » Wed Jul 17, 2013 1:18 pm UTC

So I was thinking it'd be a good idea to have a subforum-wide poll for Mafia. In this thread, mods can ask for feedback on games, we can take votes on policies, and such stuff like that. Remember that answers are anonymous.

If you'd like to use this poll, just shoot me a PM with the details, and I'll edit the poll to start it up (assuming all previous polls are done running). I can also keep archives of responses to previous polls in this post if the poll is important enough to warrant.

Thanks for your feedback!

Current question from Adam: How many mafia games would you be willing to play simultaneously right now, assuming the games are exactly the sort you most enjoy?

I don't like playing more than one unusual/complex game at a time.

I answered too little time due to other games here. modding MM is taking a lot of time staying on top of it, and at most, I can handle one other game playing at this time, which is currently worst roles.

I also answered other. If it had gotten close to enough signups to run and only needed one more, given the above, I would have pry signed up the help it run, however, I did have some reluctance to this game since the mechanics reminded me of a game I played here when I first started called Paranoia with the whole guns and ammo aspect, and that game really left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I still would have joined if the above had been true, but I likely would not have put too much into it since with that game tainting my expectations of it, I wouldn't have been too interested in it.

I have a current rule of only 2 games at once. Any more than that and I just can't provide the right level of content.

Trying to read through that game was a pain. I would have had trouble playing it.

So the clear winner appears to be "no time"

Indeed. Sadly that's not something I can fix.

I picked flavored medium.

In general I've enjoyed the flavored games I've played more than unflavored.
I quite like complex games as well, but I probably wouldn't sign up to one until Multiverse is over (or I'm out of it).

Flavor is fun.

A bit of complexity would be good, but the thing is that something like Multiverse is just very large and unruly at the moment. A lower level of complexity, something still devious, but more simple, would be good.

I like complexity, but it is very true that you can only be in one complex game at a time.

The low complexity bit is very important given how most us don't have too much time anyways, being in a bunch of complex games would only result in sub-par play. At least for me.

Can some kind person with lots of free time provide links to the old games? I'll do it this evening if no one else has already.

Necrocultia: Newer and older. Town versus Cult. Hinges upon good power usage. Transfers a culted Town player's powers onto another Town player.

PyP Bastard: RPG, SNES, and NES. Stands for "Pick your Poison". Pick a game. Bases your role on that. May or may not be game-flavored. Messes with players along the way.

Duel Dual: Here. Involves two moderators competing against each other. Receives a role from each moderator (not necessarily the same alignment).

Evil Auction: Here. Similar to Super Hero Rumble. Bids on alignments, then powers. Subtracts energy for lynches/nightkills.

8-bit Theatre: Here. Based on the webcomic. Includes a cult, a mafia group, and a mason group. Used a public inventor role last time. Voted on a night effect. (Example: One-shot cop, roleblock, or doctor.)
Changes its form depending on the observer.

On wam's question, I generally prefer interesting mechanics to flavour.

For Lataro's, we had Snark's auction game quite recently and it was good fun, but I'd really like to see a dual game if we can get enough sign-ups.

I would pick Dual Duel or PYP.

I'm trying to stick to one (or maybe one playing + one modding), so went with that. Also really busy recently.

That said, I'm a sucker for a good game, so...

In theory if they're the sort I most enjoy I'd go all the way up to whatever the max number of games on the forum is, because I would hate to miss something that had attractive flavour.

But in general I try to keep it down to one at a time, maybe signing up for a second if the one I'm playing in is beginning to have the numbers dwindle (after all it's only a matter of time before I'm killed in some fashion, or the game ends).

I answered one, but that's based on the premise that it was a game I'd really enjoy. My interests here have waned a lot, I enjoy the game still, but with the population being so low now, it's becoming difficult to maintain an active interest. I've been spending most of my time I would be spending on this forum doing other activities.

At this point, it would take a game like Wizardry or some other highly fun game to run for me to really actively play it. Unfortunately, I don't know if we have the numbers here anymore to run such a game meaningfully.
