One of the main problems with large (20+ player) games is that it's so easy to lurk without being noticed. In a 25 player game you can have 5 complete lurkers and not even notice because 20 players chatting is enough to make it hard to follow anyway. In minis you notice if anyone's lurking pretty much instantly. Also, in larger games, it's harder to post sensibly - you have to take in and digest a lot more information, so making informed analysis posts based on that information is far harder - lurking seems a much safer choice.

In futurama, for example, I realised I'd been seriously lurking (I got modpoked) so I tried to contribute heavily and ended up missing stuff that had been said earlier and, thus, getting FoS'ed by some of the others when I started making ill-informed suggestions.

It's not just Mega that's lurking in Mafia Round 7, although I used her as an example. There are 10 out of the 22 players that have either posted 1 or 0 times after confirming, or have posted more than that but are just being silly and not actually talking about the game. This is sad to me, and if games continue like this I'll have to find some other way to spend my time than mafia on this board since I will spend my time angry and not enjoying the game.
"Master Rahl guide us. Master Rahl teach us. Master Rahl protect us. In your light we thrive. In your mercy we are sheltered. In your wisdom we are humbled. We live only to serve. Our lives are yours."

...how about having a minimum number of posts per in-game day that you have to make before you get replaced? It seems to be good practice to have a couple of reserves per game, too. If you haven't posted at least once a day for more than x amount of days, then you get swapped out. Alternately, if as a mod you really don't want players to lurk, you could make that and the penalty you propose for that obvious in the sign-ups.

From the games I've read, it always seems like lurking in general is pretty detrimental to town. It's not really a fun game, and it can be pretty awkward if the back-and-forth is mainly between the same few players. It might be that people just need to know what size of game they are comfortable with, it could also be that people are in too many games to follow them all.

Lurking is indeed anti-town, although you can argue that it's good to keep your head down as a strong pro-town power-role; delaying the lynch, however, is demonstrably pro-town as it gives the opportunity for people who may get NK'ed overnight to voice any thoughts they may have - hypothetically allowing people who get NKed the chance to speak more is obviously pro-town as a NK is generally an anti-town device. And extending the day / delaying the lynch repeatedly tends to encourage lurking...

I'd say that's just as much lurking as not posting anything at all. If you're not posting then at least you have the excuse that you might be genuinely busy or unable to get online. If you're just posting banality then it's obvious that you're purely lurking.

I agree completely... the excuse "I'm not good at analysis, so I'm just checking in" drives me up a wall even more. If you don't want to attempt participating... then why are you playing?

Honestly though, Gojoe and Lanicita and folk are not responsible for keeping track of lurkers. Even as a game mod, it's not my place. Yes if someone is horribly absent for the whole game or needs to leave I'll try to find a replacement or modkill, but it's not really the mod's job. It rests on the person. Don't sign up for more games than you can handle, and don't lurk. That's all that can be asked. I don't think it's Lanicita's/Gojoe's/whoever's job to police who is and isn't classified as a horrible lurker or keeping a list on the subject. Maybe they'll disagree with me, but I don't think it's their place. And really, if everyone is just responsible for their own game play it should work fine.

My comment wasn't targeting anyone specifically... and there is a difference between "I'll post analysis later when I have more time" and "I can't be bothered to do any analysis"

Otherwise nobody should expect me to be doing anything else or be any more involved or special in this subforum than anyone else is. Whenever you guys talk about "mods" here I always assume you mean game mods (which I am not). Of course, if you actually need me to do something, I definitely will, but just cause my name is green does not make me different from other people here. Gojoe and Amy are the real leaders here, as far as I know.

I just remembered that I have hated lurkers even before I read it, I was in a game of mafia on a bus and about 4 kids at the front were just staying quiet.

I attacked them 2 days in a row....then got killed.

I was a popular target for getting killed on that bus. :(
We figure out what all this means, then do something large and violent

On the IRC, you're part of the Elite Council.

I'm something of a groupie.

Not sure how this translates to the fora.

Hmmm... Death Note signups are still happening despite the upcoming refit of the queue system... Maybe someone (and by someone, I mean someone with more authority then little newbie me) should go point out that there's a good possibility it's all going to be reset, to prevent infrequent visitors to the mafia forum from signing up for something then complaining when it's all changed and they miss out. Maybe even lock the topic for now?

An interesting idea has come up in the irc channel in a discussion between me and CF. A 1v1 mafia tournament.

Rules of the 1v1 mafia
Spoiler:
Roles:
Jester (Wins by being killed or lynched)
Mafia (Wins by killing Town, not Jester), has a daykill and a Jesterkill (If used on the Jester the Jester loses)
Town (Wins by killing Mafia, not Jester), has a daykill and a Jesterkill (If used on the Jester the Jester loses)

Gameplay:
Each player is assigned one of the roles. The game can either end with a kill or by an end-game vote by both players. If both players are the same and they vote to end the game both get half a point. If they aren't on the same side and end-game is voted both get 0 points. If both are the same and one kills the other it's half a point for the killed and no points for the killer. Otherwise it's a point for a win and a no points for a lose.

Tournament format:
Spoiler:
Players square off in matches. If an odd number of players a lucky random player automatically proceeds. Players play matches until one gets 3 points and wins. (5 points for the semi finals and finals.).

There will be a thread in which players arrange a time to play on irc (#xkcdmafia on irc.foonetic.net). (The mods will try to always lurk in the channel, waiting for a match to start. Or they could just when players have a game scheduled and pop in then.) After a match the mod which modded it will post the results, log (spoilered) and against whom the winner plays next. Losers drop out.

If there seems to be support I'll start sign-ups. More mods are also welcome and needed. Also, should the irc thread or the sign-up thread be used for sign-ups?
