Secret Theme Mafia - ALPHA THREAD

War. War never changes...

The year is 2092. Mankind has advanced significantly in the past century. Through genetic manipulation, scientists have designed better and better humans, unlocking potentials never before seen in the human mind and body. The genetic secrets of extrasensory perception (ESP) were unlocked, allowing man to perform such feats as seeing the future, reading minds, and moving objects with one’s mind. Technology advanced significantly as well, with mechanical bio-ware organs able to be implanted into the body, extending the human lifespan past 150 years, for those wealthy enough to afford it! Additionally, cloning and the ability to store, alter and implant memories, as well as the technology to advance the age of a clone, allow one to “replace” their passed loved ones - again, at a price.

Though there are only a few thousand mages in the world, their services are highly valued by the military, and they often receive exorbitantly large salaries for their assistance. Because of the damage a rogue mage could cause, “anti-mages”, people with the power to negate other’s magic abilities, became very important as well.

Terrunci Associates, the largest mili-mage contracting firm in the world, keeps a staff of 50 mages and 50 anti-mages in cryo-stasis, waking them when necessary. They are always kept in pairs in stasis, as even though they are frozen, their brains still remain active, and pairing the mages with the anti-mages allows Terrunci to keep their abilities from manifesting in stasis.

You were all employees of Terrunci, sent on a mission. That much you can remember. Then, something happened. Just what, you don’t know. As soon as you arrived, everyone in the squad felt as though their recent memories had been wiped away - not sure what to do, your squad’s Scanner Specialist determined that it was likely caused by a strong magic force in the area. Unable to pinpoint its location, it was decided that the rogue mage was within the squad. The only way to solve this would be through a series of democratic military executions - known hundreds of years ago as a “lynch-mob”.

This is a somewhat standard, somewhat non-standard game of Mafia. It is standard in that everyone has abilities and alignments, and you carry out a lynch vote to get rid of your opponents. It is non-standard in a few unique ways: There are a few abilities that work in ways that you likely have never seen before, and there are a few new roles and rules.

This is also a MOSTLY-CLOSED setup, and will contain Silknor-type-3 bastardry, in that the game setup may not be immediately apparent to you. However, everyone’s role PM is more or less honest - none contain any blatant lies.

The rules are as follows: (These are non-standard rules, so they are not spoilered)

1. There is no “majority-lynch” or “hammer” - each day runs until the deadline, when the player with the most votes on them will be lynched (in the event of a tie, one is chosen randomly from those tied for the most votes – “no lynch” is not permitted).
2. There is no night. All actions take place during the day. All groups with private communication are able to communicate at any time - but must copy me on all PMs.
3. You may not read spoilers, even if dead, unless I say so.
4. No information is revealed about the dead in the morning flavor.
5. LYLO and MYLO will be announced honestly and correctly.
6. There is one town faction, and at least one non-town faction. Starting numbers are unknown.
6a. The town faction’s win condition is to eliminate all non-town factions.
6b. Any non-town faction’s win condition is to make a town win impossible.
7. This is thread "ALPHA". You may only read and post in this thread if you have been informed that you are in thread ALPHA.
8. If you have been assigned to this thread, you may NOT read or post in THREAD BETA. Everyone in that thread is dead.
9. These rules are subject to change.

And we're full!

The squad gathers around, and begins to figure out a course of action. You count your resources: Thirteen squad members, an ample supply of cyanide capsules in case something goes terribly wrong (everyone has one on their person in the event that they are captured by enemies), food rations for over a month, weapons, armor, and ammunition galore. Everyone has their own private packs, too. After everyone is satisfied that the group supplies have been counted and distributed, work begins to find out what sort of facilities are available at your squad's current location.

Everyone prepares their packs and looks around. There's a cloning vat, rooms for all sorts of genetic testing, and a cryo-stasis chamber with pods for nearly a hundred people, some already occupied. There's miles and miles of corridors, and hundreds of rooms. This is obviously a major research facility. Interestingly, there's no one to be found anywhere (probably good!). If only you could remember what you were sent here for... Oh well, there's not enough time to debate that when you've got infiltrators in your midst!

To the lynch-mob(ile)!

Day 1 begins now. I am sending out role PMs - no need to confirm.
There is no majority lynch. Day 1 will last until approximately noon on Thursday, EST. That is approximately 122.5 hours from right now, when the player with the most votes on them will be lynched.

Well, I was going to question Van's motives, but the OMGUS vote is pretty suspicious too.

Jayhsu, I hope you're not serious? Van's vote is the OMGUS, to Lataro's pre-game vote. :P And given the setup, we could ALL joke-vote for Lataro now, and it would still have no effect!

This is going to be very confusing with all the "not really dead when you're dead" stuff going on.

There's no reason to be confused. This is a mafia game, not a role-playing game.

Some players may have abilities that interact with the facility you're in (e.g. interacting with the vats or pods), if you have such an ability, you will use it by posting it publicly in bold, as Mavketl has done. Abilities that are magic or simply role-related can be pm-ed to me, and if there are any questions about what category an ability falls under, please ask me via PM.

However, if your role does not have such an ability (you would have been told if it did), I'd prefer you not poking around randomly, as it will get confusing and silly. You won't learn anything by "exploring", and when I called this mafia "secret" mafia, I didn't mean that there'd be "secrets" you could find by poking around!

I was just reading the flavor (again, because there seems to be nothing else to do but throw around meta votes.), and this stuck out at me:

Flavor wrote:The squad gathers around, and begins to figure out a course of action.

We have fourteen players. I assume that the scum are the infiltrators into the squad, so they would be counted as squad members. That means that their is one role outside of either town or scum in this game (Though, I guess it could possibly be either one, heh.). Does anyone have any ideas on what that role could be? :-?

That's a good question, and it raises another question:

Aardvarki wrote:6a. The town faction’s win condition is to eliminate all non-town factions.
6b. Any non-town faction’s win condition is to make a town win impossible.

Mod: If there were to be a non-town independent player in the setup, would such a player be considered to form their own "faction", or would they be considered a factionless player? After all, it's not actually written that every player is a member of a faction.

If there's a "faction" of one independent, then they're basically just scum without communication with the other scum, because the rules above mean the town has to eliminate them and they have to stop the town. If there's a non-"faction" independent, then they could have any win condition under the sun, but the town wouldn't have to eliminate them.

To clarify:

All players are either town, or non-town. Town's objective is to eliminate all of the players who are non-town. Non-town's objective is to make a town win impossible. If there exists a "faction" of one independent, they'd be considered a non-town player, and would have to be eliminated for town to satisfy their win condition.

Mages and anti-mages are supposed to be paired, but our "team" is supposed to be 13. And there are actually 14 people around. That means that we have at least one, if not two persons who are neither mage nor anti-mage.

A four-person mafia would seem large, so there may be a mafia member who is "paired with" a townie. (I don't know if the pairing has any real effect on the game, though.) There may alternatively be a non-magic mafioso.

Think that might not apply on missions.

Hmmm...
Aardvarki wrote:Unable to pinpoint its location, it was decided that the rogue mage was within the squad.
So does that mean we're a 13-strong squad plus a rogue mage, or 12-mages + 1-rogue mage + 1-other? Or multiple factions within the squad?

So not a whole lot of setup info to speculate about. That means the only things to glean info from right now is flavor and rules.

Rules imply someone has some sort of res ability, from the do not read spoilers until you are told you may do so.

I see people speculating about the 13 squad members line. The line before it says you take stock of your available resources or something like that. So I read the 13 squad members as a resource to you, making the squad 14. Of course the doesn't mean there aren't any independents or multiple factions. I just don't feel that line is a very definitive clue. I would expect the squad size to have been a smaller number if it were meant to give us a clue about the opposing faction(s), as in a game with 14 people I would expect more than 1 bad guy.

That's really all I have for now, I just got done relocating to my temporary holiday location, so I haven't given this a lot of serious thought yet, so hopefully more to come soonish.

Reading the flavour, I don't think we can guess the theme. It has magic and some "advanced" technology so sci-fi/magic themed but nothing jumps out at me for being possible themes. Anyway, I'm not sure it matters much anyway to the set-up since obviously names aren't going to come up so rolespec is useless anyway.

I think I agree with EH that there isn't going to be just 1 bad guy.

More to come later today.

Aww, but moooom. :(

Since I'm not allowed to interact with the toys but supposedly other people can, I guess that means some kind of cop (genetic testing), someone who can do stuff with people after they're dead, like resurrect them (cryo-pods) and... cloning vats? I'm not sure how that would be implemented. Also something about weapons (I imagine there are kills in the game, at least the 'regular' NK) and 'private packs' which can contain pretty much anything.

Reread brought me to:
Flavour in the OP wrote:The genetic secrets of extrasensory perception (ESP) were unlocked, allowing man to perform such feats as seeing the future, reading minds, and moving objects with one’s mind.
So we could be dealing with:
- reading minds (alignment cop?)
- the ability to do wacky stuff with memories
- the ability to replace dead people with their clones (with the same memories --> basically a resurrection)

I wonder why the lynching mechanic is odd. Any thoughts on that? I'm drawing a blank.

The lynch mechanic could just be a way to keep people from considering lynching quickly to cut off day actions. I remember finding that annoying when I read Buffy - it's pure gaming the system. This is a clean solution to it. The only thing I wonder about is why we're not allowed to no-lynch.

I'm not sure how much we can get out of the flavor descriptions - after all, they also say we all have cyanide capsules, and I'm pretty sure we can't voluntarily commit suicide. (Side note - this would actually be useful. A townie who's going to be lynched would benefit from helping the town by suiciding to allow the town to use their lynch on someone else.) And the weapons don't mean that we can just pick them up and start shooting people. So whatever roles there are that allow using the devices must be pretty subjective - some of them might be meaningful, some might be red herrings.

We do know that we have a
