[TM] HUAC Mafia - Game Over: Neither Red Nor Dead

Postby Misnomer » Thu Jan 13, 2011 4:56 pm UTC

The year is 1949 - and communism is on the march.

Since the fall of Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union has slowly but steadily extended its control over the countries of Eastern Europe. Through a combination of fraud, infiltration and sheer brute force, Communist regimes have sprung up from Berlin to Tirana, as Stalin's iron curtain falls down across Europe.

Only the tiny and backward country of Ruritania remains free from Soviet control. After months of delay, Ruritania's squabbling politicians have finally begun to investigate reports of Soviet infiltration at the heart of government. MPs from both sides of the House have joined together to form the House Un-Ruritanian Activities Committee (HUAC), a powerful (and constitutionally questionable) body with the power to summarily execute suspected communists. At last, Ruritania has the means to counter the red threat.

But, with HUAC itself already infilitrated by communist agents, and the political parties scrambling to gain control for partisan advantage, the shadow of soviet control is already looming over Ruritania...

Setup

This is a setup involving a splintered town faction, and a single scum faction.

At the start of the game, every player is given one of three party alignments - Socialist, Monarchist or Independent. All alignments will be made public at the start of the game.

Socialists gain a half-win if all the communists are eliminated, and an additional half win if they outnumber the Monarchists at the end of the game.
Monarchists gain a half-win if all the communists are eliminated, and an additional half win if they outnumber the Socialists at the end of the game.
Independents gain a half-win if all the communists are eliminated, and an additional half win if they, personally, are alive at the end of the game.

All town roles lose if the communists win.

Communists gain their win if at any point they control 50% of the vote. Communists are given party alignments just like town players, but these do not affect their win condition.

Socialists and Monarchists (including undercover communists) are allowed to communicate with players in the same party as them via PM during each day phase. Independents are not allowed to communicate with each other.

The following roles *may* be in the game:
MP – Vanilla Town
Ex-Communist – Miller
Investigator – Cop
Security Chief – Doctor
Communist – Scum

Role PMs:
Spoiler:
You are an MP. [Vanilla Town]

To aid the fight against Communism, you have been appointed to the House Un-Ruritanian Activities Committee (HUAC). You have no special talents, and so will have to rely on your wits alone to find the Commies.

You are a member of the Socialist/Monarchist Party, and you may communicate with your fellow party members via PM during each day phase. A full list of party allegiances is available in the game thread. Please remember to CC me in all PMs. You gain a half-win if all the Communists are caught, and an additional half-win if your party outnumbers the Monarchists/Socialists at the end of the game. You lose if the Communists win.

Or

You are an independent, free from party ties. You gain a half win if all the communists are caught, and an additional half-win if you are still alive at the end of the game. You lose if the communists win.

You are an Ex-Communist. [Miller]

Everybody makes mistakes when their younger. Yours was to become a communist. Oh of course, you never really did much more than attend a few rallies and sing a few songs, but that’s not how it will look to your parliamentary colleagues, is it? And now you’ve been made a member of HUAC… and you’re certain that if anybody investigates you, they’ll think you’re guilty. You’d best get to work finding the real communists, before anybody suspects you!

You are an Investigator. [Cop]

Unlike some of your parliamentary colleagues, you always knew that the Commies weren’t to be trusted. As such, you’ve spent the last few years gathering the resources required to amount a full investigation into suspected communist activities. As luck would have it, just as your plans have come into readiness, you’ve been appointed to HUAC. Now let’s just see how innocent your colleagues really are…

Each night phase, you may send in the name of another player, and you will be told whether or not they are a communist.

You are a Security Chief. [Doctor]

Politics is a dangerous game – especially when there are communists on the loose. Wary of the ever-present threat of assassination, you’ve taken it upon yourself to direct HUAC’s security arrangements. Your resources are limited though, meaning you can only protect one of your parliamentary colleagues each night… will you be able to guess who the commies will target?

Each night, you may send in the name of another player. If that player is the target of a kill attempt that night, you will protect them and they will survive.

You are a Communist. [Scum]

Almost as soon as the war was over, you managed to get yourself elected to this pathetic institution that the bourgeoisie call a parliament. The idea was to slowly gain in power and influence, and then spark a revolution from above and build a true state for the working classes! Unfortunately, your opponents seemed to have cottoned onto the fact that their parliament has been infiltrated, and are now actively seeking to destroy you and your allies. You’d better stop HUAC in its tracks before it finds out too much…

Your fellow communists are [redacted]. Each night phase, you may communicate with them via PM, and then send in the name of a player to kill. Please remember to CC me in all PMs. You win if you and your fellow communists control the vote.

You have infiltrated the Socialist/Monarchist Party, and will appear as a member in the game thread. You may communicate with your fellow party members via PM during each day phase. A full list of party allegiances is available in the game thread. Please remember to CC me in all PMs.

Or

You have disguised yourself as an independent MP, and will appear as such in the game thread.

Rules
1. Do not talk about the game outside this thread.
2. DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE GAME OUTSIDE THIS THREAD. Spoiler any posts about the game in the discussion thread and DO NOT READ SPOILERS IF YOU ARE STILL ALIVE. You are still alive until I say you are dead. You may PM if and only if explicitly stated in your role description (all PMs must be cc'd to me).
3. Please stay (at least mostly) on topic.
4. Don't lurk through the whole game; if you need to drop out, TELL ME. Really bad lurkers REALLY PISS ME OFF. We have replacement players just in case real life gets in the way of your mafia playing.
5. If you aren't part of the game, please post in spoilers in the discussion thread for outside analysis. (*grabbing popcorn* is okay, just don't be too disruptive.)
6. Once I say that it's nighttime, please do not post anything of content in the thread. *sleep* posts, off-topic chatter, etc. is fine. Just don't make analysis or accusation type posts - i.e. no content posting once I call night.
7. If you die, don't say anything for the rest of the game except a simple, "Bah, you got me," which reveals no information.
8. You may not post verbatim or quote from your role PM. Paraphrasing is fine.
9. You may not edit your posts.

In this game, there are no vote-altering roles, so assume that hammer ends the day.

Confirming.

Does the above mean that we are not allowed to continue discussion after the hammer?

Re: [TM] HUAC Mafia - Day 1: A House Divided

Postby Misnomer » Thu Jan 13, 2011 5:43 pm UTC

Misnomer, the elderly committee chairman, looked around the chamber and sighed.

All the Socialists had sat to down to his left, and all the Monarchists to his right. Nobody had said anything to each other yet, but the tension between the two groups was obvious - each was glaring at the other, as though they viewed their opponents as some sort of strange and disgusting creatures who had no right to be here. Misnomer sighed again - the next few days were clearly not going to be easy. Taking a deep breath, he began -

"Honourable Members of Parliament, I hereby open this, the first session of the House Un-Ruritanian Activities Comittee. I'm sure you all need no reminding that our first task will be to remove any communist influences from the comittee itself."

"So... let the accusations begin..."

The game has started - it is now D1. All roles have now been sent out - if you have not recieved one, contact me urgently.
The deadline is provisionally set for 6pm GMT on Sunday. 7 votes are needed to lynch, 4 to lynch at deadline.

Good luck everyone, hope you enjoy the game! :)

Were all of the role PMs in the OP sent out?

The presence of two parties is interesting, although I do think finding scum should be our main priority for now at least especially since we have no clue as regards to the numbers of scum.

Speaking of which, millers might want to claim D1. I realize with a largely closed set-up we wouldn't know how many miller claims are true or false, but I think it would give us a good idea of numbers. One possible downside is that it eliminates someone as a power role though. What are your thoughts about this?

Yo.

Only two people can't day talk, and all the scum are vanilla. Novel.

More to the point, we need to be lynching Lataro. Right now.

FACT: Lataro has 1101 posts, yet has not managed to add any content to this game thus far. That's the definition of useless lurker right there.
FACT: Coulrophobia, or the fear of clowns, is thought to affect as many as 1 in 7 people. His choice in that thing as an avatar can be considered nothing less than a declaration of hostile intentions and desire to cause mayhem.
FACT: Lataro's name is more properly displayed as "La Tarõ", which translates to "The Betrayer", which again reveals his premeditated intent to bring destruction and ruin.
FACT: Lataro's choice of avatar is Kefka, one of the most nefarious villains ever. His list of crimes and atrocities is vast, including things such as: slavery, use of chemical or biological weapons, scorched earth tactics which resulted in the World of Ruin, and genocide - with intent to commit specicide.
FACT: Lataro has proven that like Kefka, he will stop at nothing to get what he wants, including sucking people into black holes.

The path we must take is clear.

Well, that was unexpected.

I just read Lataro's "new" signature for the first time (before I just regarded it as [block of text]) and really, Goodkind? This is only forgivable if you put it in specifically for this game as a comment on the awful anti-communist propaganda book that was Faith of the Fallen.

Are you really willing to defend Faith of the Fallen as a good book? You must be as deranged as you look.

On a more serious note: I think it is likely that there are no millers. I suspect this mod of trying to create uncertainty where there is no reason for it. I hope that there are doctors and cops but there's not really much evidence for it one way or another. And that's kind of all I can come up with about this set-up.

I feel like the mod is trying to keep party lines very prominent - almost as if he wants us to hate each other. I, for one, welcome our Socialist allies (except the ones who are actually communists, which is kind of hard to tell sometimes because the differences aren't really that big)!

My guess is that there are one of two situations here:
a) there are a crapton of millers (I'm only mildly familiar with the flavor source, but my understanding is that it was a witch hunt, with people getting called out for having gone to school with someone who had made pro-communist remarks)
b) there are 0-1 millers, and the role exists as a safe haven for scum

I am not a miller.

He totally would've mis-sized me were that the case.

Er-hem. As Mav said, I would be less likely to believe a miller if they claimed later. However, we don't know how many millers we have.

By the way, is it MYLO?

Up the republic! Right up! (Cookie for the reference)

Um, yeah. Miller here. I don't think there's any value in me not claiming, as an independent.

I'm very tempted to join the wagon on Lataro just for the shiggles. Van's on fire.

yeah, to be honest Van's post is amusing enough to make me just want to push it through. But I'll refrain, becuse, you know... game playing and all.

On a more serious note, I'm a little surprised anyone would support a socialistic system, when a monarchy would clearly make us immune to communist infiltration. With a wise ruler dedicated to rooting out evil, we're sure to win!

Oh, right, I see the confusion. No, I mean she's literally on fire; that's just how those socialists roll.
