The penultimate proper QONG is here, and I wish I felt happier about it.

...oh, I'm pope? Uh, can I decree that people read my story and help do the hard critical thinking that I'm apparently incapable of to make any of it actually make sense?

Failing that, I guess just, don't worry, be happy?

Or how about... thank someone in this thread for something helpful they have done for you.

1190: "Time": HOW SILENTTIMELY IS IT, REALLY, TO SCHIZOBLITZ IN A PREABANDONED BUILDING DURING A HANIAMFLOOD?

Postby mrob27 » Thu Nov 16, 2017 9:36 am UTC

balthasar_s wrote:it says "AUTEMEME"

Ah yes, it seems I went for the two :::E:::E version and accidentally got three :::E:E:E instead. That will happen. EE:EE:EE!
I've changed the name of this thing a few times. The thing that inspired @Link was "AUTOMEME", a website that is now gone (and the domain name is now full of spam). @Link called xes version AUTOMOME, and announced it here. For a little while it stopped working and I said I was considering making my own, which I had finished by NP1873, and I switched the name back to automeme, mainly because I separated the meme-generating algorithms from the snowclone templates themselves, so the program is not OTT-specific. It was just a Perl script at that point, but by NP1877 I had put it on the web with a server, and confusingly the page URL was (and still is) mrob.com/time/automome. Later I edited the webpage description and I think I switched to "automeme" in one or two places. Now I like "autemome" for the reasons @HES pointed out and because it's an anagram of "automeme".

For decree:
Oh, dear, I didn't really want to say this, but I guess it's not a big surprise, maybe? Anyway, you did make a request and your request even has the words "hard critical thinking" in it, so please don't take this personally.
I can't deal with episodic stories that are revealed slowly. The suspense is so painful that it removes all enjoyment. The anxiety caused by the unpredictability of real life is bad enough, why create more of it? So I wait until it's done. I didn't give any time to Time until it *nded.
Even if the entire text is all available, I don't like having to deal with non-linear narrative — for example, the use of flashbacks, or jumping around between multiple concurrent plot-lines.
Then there's the Tolstoy factor: lots of characters make it too difficult to keep track of what's going on, and I lose interest (this partly cancels out the first concern: there's less suspense if I don't even remember what it is that I was in suspense about.)
tl;dr: No "Game of Thrones" for me.

I looked at the Quelouva overview (the page that you see by selecting the "Chronicles of Quelouva" tab in the menubar at the top of any episode) and I saw a trilogy of trilogies of trilogies of trilogies of trilogies, to be revealed in a circuitous order that would make William Faulkner ("The Sound and the Fury") envious. Then I looked at a few episodes chosen at random, and saw so many bespoke proper nouns that it seemed you were giving Tolkien and Neal Stephenson ("Anathem") a run for it. I'm sure these characterisations are unfair, but it was the impression given by my attempt to read the overview … so I decided that I had to give the whole thing a pass. Perhaps you should eliminate the overview (just kidding).

Anyway, constructive suggestions: how about a glossary? Every proper noun should be listed, and the description should be a completely-spoiler-ful summary of what that person/place/thing is, and why it had to be in the story.

Also, please make all the text available as a single file (in "Narratively" order, as that seems to be the order you're writing it in), in copyable plain text, so I can search for one of the proper nouns and see it in context (to, for example, try to figure out why that name seems familiar).

Thanks mrob, no hard feelings at all, it sounds like it's just not your kind of story.

The glossary idea is a good one. I had been thinking that maybe my next phase of writing would be to list every character and then go through in chronological order and make sure that they're properly named, described, and accounted for in every episode without any continuity gaps or inconsistencies, and I could probably compile a glossary in the process of doing that; it might actually help me, too. That won't be for a while though, as I plan on setting the project aside for at least a year after I finish up this year's phase of writing.

Hi @Pforrest, I'm glad my comments weren't hurtful.

In the last wip or so Firefox got updated, and so did GreaseMonkey, and between the two of them a lot of my OTT userscripts stopped working: specifically most of the ones that display options with checkboxen at the bottom: multiquote, no-tinytext, sig-contrast, and spoiler-opener.
However, it seems that newpix-converter and we-love-bana-na-yada still work because I shimmed GM_getValue. I'll work on fixing the others.

At the time, considering the accompanying illustration those words seemed to refer to the buttons next to the sliding door, which however immediately turned out to actually work. So I conclude that you, Balthasar, have been cleverly misleading us readers and that maybe b and kxa misunderstood each other in 172.

Hmph. Well the buttons I was referring to were the ones on the apparatus that the wheelstick fell on, which is showing the countdown. Did you mean to point out that k's words serendipitously turned out to be right after all, although in reference to a different set of buttons than originally intended by the speaker and understood by the audience?

You might. If your internet service provider decides that your package no longer includes access to the XKCD fora.

It's weird to run into OTTers elsewhere on the internet. I was reading through the comments on a dithering algorithm and noticed one posted by mrob.

I tried to find the mrob there and I failed.

But the dithering was interesting to me.
You probably can guess why.

1190: Time: EXCUSE ME MA'AM, DO YOU HAVE A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT BLUEPIXELS?

Postby mrob27 » Sat Nov 25, 2017 12:52 am UTC

Desert Bus For Hope is awesome and someyip I hope I can watch some of it live. That didn't happen this time around… but I do have the app for my phone and play it when I'm bored, or when I'm on the bus, which is often the same thing.

I didn't find it either… but I suppose I must have posted something about dithering to some forum, just not that one.
I get credited with a ch*rp-ton of stuff, much of which I don't understand. For example, what is this? They mention me 13 times. Since they're converting images to Apple-][ format, I guess they're referring to this article which was originally written for USENET 17 yips ago (but without the colour images). (I also find things that make a lot more sense, like this page (it's in French) where someone used something I did (namely, this way of generating Mandelbrot images like these) and their images are in fact very similar, with colours that express two different types of information.

Woah, I was reading this same post about dithering! I didn't comment anything because I haven't made a tigsource account, but I did twooter at him about it. Imagine, 3 OTTers looking at the same game about Time travel.

edit: ok well, maybe Mrob wasn't there. But I was!
I made my avatar, Buffygirl hatted it, Yappo smileyed it and ggh taroted it!
I've changed, witnessing this thing so beautiful

Good luck on blitzing, katakissa, username5243, musthavebeenmykarma, iskinner, thunk, GnomeAnne, and quantized ! Keep the signposts coming, we love em in the now!

Lots of molpish stuff on this page.

Hi, edo!! It's so good to see you. Glad you posted here. :)

And Gingercat found a portal out of the Basement! Awesomeful, I hope other OTTers find it. Although if it's getting kicked to pieces by a frost giant, I guess that may not be possible. :( (Not that I know what a frost giant is, but it doesn't sound good.)

Wow, Pfhorrest, it's amazing how much work you've done on your story. I've started reading it, and I'm just amazed at the complexity and connections among the various narratives.

Ah, so that was you climbing those stairs. Poor hamply!

Every year I say I'm going to watch a little Desert Bus, and then every year it goes by without me doing so. I always enjoy ED's comments on it, though.

And Neil!! Hi, Neil! It's great to see you.

Happy Gratefulness/Raptor-eating Day and/or Happy third Thursdip of November (Heretical) and/or Happy third Onglessdix of Visitation Ja!. I also am thankful for all of you.

For context, the tavern that the frost giant is kicking is called The Seven Otters, and is a dimension-hopping, plot-central building in the OTTDnD game.

I would really, really love to see some more OTTers in the DnD chat too. Not necessarily to participate (although you're welcome to!), but just to chatter :)

Oh, and the latest Torgos news: He got hit with a Disintegrate spell. He didn't survive it.
I am Schrödinger's Gingercat.
