I think they're looking at an island, in a very wide river. They're high enough (barely) that they could see over it, but I think they're seeing around both ends of it.

Kudos, that was a decently difficult puzzle! And brilliant use of the phrase "One Tru Cmi"

So it can actually be solved? I thought he just shoved letters in the squares at random - after all, he said it was to slow us down.

I was all ready to give him the Black Hat Guy award for this thread, for most effective use of nerd-sniping.

Yep, it's solvable. So not an effective nerd-snipe, perhaps, but a very effective Sudoku-trap. :D

Comment about the solution, which is only really a spoiler if figuring out what kind of puzzle it is is meant to be part of the puzzle:
Spoiler:
If only I'd read the URL of the image first. I was confused even by the answer for a while, having figured out that it must be a crossword (with blue squares instead of black squares) where you had to first rearrange the 3x3 pieces (as seemed to be necessary so that something would fit with the existing letters) and then fill in whatever Time-appropriate words fit. When I saw the answer, I thought maybe the crossword was in rot13, until I realised you'd also written in the blue squares. Then for a moment I thought you'd just filled in random letters to annoy us lazy folk who looked at your solution instead of solving it ourselves. Then I realised it was a sudoku, went to reply, and saw the URL. While writing this, I started to wonder what the blue squares were even there for, and went back and looked at them. In summary:

In my day, sudoku weren't popular yet, but there were crosswords you had to assemble from 3x3 pieces. I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time…

In summary: Yes, it's a brilliant puzzle! Given that I completely misinterpreted it several times even upon seeing the solution, I'm glad I cheated or I would have been nerdsniped to the end of Time.

Derp. I didn't even consider the blue squares while sudoku-ing. I just solved the sudoku part of it...was this supposed to be a double-puzzle?

Pretty much the same for me.
I did solve it now (without cheating and looking at BlitzGirl's solution). But I still don't get what the blue cells are supposed to indicate. The puzzle is uniquely solvable without them, and there are 17 of them, so not a multiple of 8, which makes it unlikely that they're part of the puzzle. So just decoration?

Edit: ninjasolved by BlitzGirl, once again. (The spelling mistake is due to the constraints of the puzzle, of course.)
Edit²: fixed spoiler tag.

Solved (assuming the rules to be "fill each square with a letter such that each row column and 3x3 box has all the (unique) letters of 'one true comic'" (or, as BlitzGirl said, 'one tru cmi').
Questions:
1. Is there any pattern to the blue squares?
2. Did you get the idea before or after you realised there were 9 distinct letters in "one true comic"?
Edit: I should also admit that I did start solving this, then think "wait, have I just been nerd-sniped?"
Then I carried on solving.

But that doesn't work with the shape of the landscape. The hills in the second frame are higher than in the first frame, for instance.

I think Randall is just really bad at zooming out as the terrain under Megan and Cueball is changing as well...at least I think it is, hard to tell with everything moving.

Obviously it's the end of time...pan out, fade to white, over.1

Walking upstream toward a junction between two rivers?

(This would be more normal when walking downstream; streams normally fan out going upstream. But they could be going toward the upstream tip of an island, or seeing the fan-out of a river delta.)

It looks like they are going upstream towards the headwater and the smallest portion of the delta (kinda like "someone" mentioned on page 531)

Edit: make up your mind. Small or big, which one is it?

The hill lets them see their this "river"1 is actually part of a delta2

1"small"
2 part of a bigger river. (Not as big as the Sea)

Edit
added "strike-through"

Edit
sorry that was a little snarky

No. You must not skip so easily. *sorry gummies*

Actually, I pioneered that. (Just did it once, but still.) I beat BlitzGirl by 19 newpix.

Thank you! I don't know about this Bop thing though. We'll see.

Hehe. I'm liking this "choose-your-own adventure" you're on.

It was a zoom out and a behind them angle change.

Animation updated with the 4th frame:

Could be, but it would be very un-Randall-like. Just look at his zoom at the beginning of Time, that one was pixel-perfect.
This just looks irregular, I still have no idea what we're looking at.

Whatever we are seeing, I'm certain Lord Randall intended these frames to look exactly the way they do.

Looks like it's zooming out. Maybe we'll see other rivers and stuff.

I believe we're looking at a 2-dimensional cross-section. Therefore, with those 3 frames, they're walking, we're zooming, they walk, we zoom. The landscape isn't matching because there's a new bump 3q$ ahead, then another another 3q or 4q.

$ q = cue (measurement).

C&M are not standing still, so perhaps they are still walking and now the camera is following them into the image (as I thought it might do earlier when they first started walking along the river).

Ninja'd by azule (I think) before I even had time to post, but I post anyway.

Here's Cuegan in the last four frames:
Image
Hard to say for sure, with so few pixels involved, but there doesn't seem to be any zoom involved. But they don't seem to be walking either; they're looking to their right. And what is Megan pointing at in the third frame?

I guess we'll just have to – wait for it – wait for it.

I agree.

I think he's showing a fork in the river and we're approaching the narrow part of the split. Either way, Randall decided to get funky with the "camera work" here. Thus, we are following them into the frame.
