I used the subpixel radiosity encapsulation method. It's not 100% accurate (it's been known to insert trebuchets where there are none) but it's better than some of the other techniques.

Thanks, CSI-style Enhancement Department!
It makes sense, the thingamabob does indeed resemble the trebuchet projectiles from earlier. Could this be the microtrebuchet¹¹ that BlitzGirl supposedly rescued, but has never actually shown up after her arrival in the present?

¹¹: nope, only 5 syllables.

...And it's still in the comic.

Yep, BlitzGirl is LaPetite.

Ok, this one may need some explanation, so here I go:

As some of you may be aware, I was a bit obsessed the last days with finding a good way to measure information content of individual posts. After some dead ends I finally came up with the following scheme to approximate originality and information content in the OTT.
I count the number of new words per post, and the number of new word sequences with a length of 2, 3, 4, and 5. Than I summarize those values but in doing so divide the number for the sequences by 2, 4, 8 and 16, to counter inflation. (This step btw is highly dubious in terms of information theory, but I couldn't come up with anything better... so sue me.) As a last step I multiply by 16 (just to get rid of the fractions).

The diagram below is the first result of these calculations. What is pretty amazing about it is the rise in original content. The graph starts with a peak, which is just to be expected: The first post naturally is all new content and so are the following ones. The metric quickly declines as most words and combinations thereof are already used. But then something amazing happens: The counts rise. And keep rising. And still do so. Which means that... Boy, aren't we a creative bunch!

Ok it's coma time here, but I've got a few new and novel ideas for combining this data with other things (eras come to mind, but also user rankings, new users by time, information by post length and so on)

Postby tman2nd » Sun May 19, 2013 8:37 pm UTC

A message from the past
I just saw Dracomax's signature
Blitzers: Post whatever you want, but keep in mind, many of us have read the OTT before. My advice:If you have something witty or something New on as far as you have read, go ahead. If not, think before posting.

I would like to say that this signature kind of frees me. I kind of felt obligated to give updates which was more difficult because I already know about many of the things that happen in this part of the past, and I definitely know what happens in the OTC. I started with a big post of reply's, but after that my updates became short and without much content. I have decided not to post until I catch up to where I left to start this journey unless there's something I really have to reply to.

One more thing before I go.
Helper wrote:

I'll say 18244.

I think the comic will go for at least a couple more centinewpix, and after that I think the discussion will slowly die down. My guess is 9337.

They couldn't be more wrong. :)

Sciscitor wrote:Ok folks ... update on the quote tree graph (up to post 22300ish).
This time it's the full graph. And with full I mean FULL... all the 835 people who have quoted or have been quoted or both and all the 8757 quotes along with all the names, color coded average posting length, size coded posting count per user, width and color coded quote count and (at least for the main quoters) directional hints (also known as arrows)1.
I can append only a compressed minified thumb here (about 1.3 MB), the links go to the original sized 4096x4096 PNG (15.6 MB) and a SVG (4.1 MB) version. But beware, these images are not for the faint of heart or low on RAM.
I call them "The Constellations of Time". Enjoy.

Not only was I excited to actually find my name there and marvel at the awesomeness of the image, but the first thing I thought of upon seeing the map was the Hyperspace map in Escape Velocity... Tho very much exploded. I would hate to try to select just one destination out of that constellatory mess  Just had to mention that :D

A few NewPages ago I brought you a hourglass description. Now I bring another one:
Spoiler:
The hourglass at the center of the room is actually two blobs of white and black sand, self-organized to resemble a hourglass. The sand grains come from the upper blob in a single line, then spread just above the lower blob's surface, effectively creating a new layer on it.

As more grains come from the upper blob, the grains in the bottom layer of the lower blob fly back to the top of the upper blob. The flow makes a spiral around the blobs, coming from one side in the lower blob and reaching the opposite side in the upper blob.

As the bottom sand layer is decomposed, grains from the layers above it fall to the now-bottom layer proportionally so the layers' size remains constant. At a constant interval, all flow of sand grains stop, revealing a pattern on the upper layer.

Yep, Andromeda intelligent sand grains.

Ah, I, uh don't really know what part of Umwelt you mean; the title-text? All I see in Umwelt at the moment is a white circle fading to black; looks a bit like the exit to a round tunnel. When it first appeared I remember a snake which changed with the width of the browser, but that was about 300 versions of Firefox ago, so I guess that's why it looks different now.

So, raptorfly #1 has disappeared. A second one appeared - actually two frames ago, already. It sat perfectely still for one more frame, and then flew off.
Image

Edit: if you look carefully at the first frame, there is one pixel that is darker, so the raptorfly (or whatever) was already there, it just rose up, sat still, then flew away. Or something like that.

The plant that grew suddenly on newpix#1426 appears to be similar (enough) to the one the beesnake just came out of this newpix(#1459). Also, you can tell (from the previous 2 newpix) that the length is not a trail as the 2nd beesnake had it's tail while it was stationary.

Thought: the plant is actually a beesnake. OR, the plants pop up quickly, providing homes/hiding places for beesnakes.

If you read this sig, post about one arbitrary thing you did today.

I celebrate up to six arbitrary things before breakfast.

This one.
Unfortunately, Phaelin hasn't logged in since 1 April, so no chance that this will be fixed. :(

If a bunch of us traveled back to there and reported it to the mods? Some small number? (I haven't.)

The only way then is fixing the phpBB BBCode parser. But I doubt the One True Webmaster davean would let us do that. :D

That isn't even part of phpBB core, it is a quick hack I added ages ago for some subforum or other. Just a custom BBCode tag with some JS attached. It could easily be improved. Just send a patch or something.

Just summon me again, or better yet email it.

Umwelt.

Thanks, updated original post.

So, you're one of today's lucky 10k, uh?
Here, check it out.

HOLY CRAP THERE'S MULTIPLE VERSIONS OF "UMWELT"
I actually never knew this before. I got the "turtle in a desert" version, and thought the title-text was referring to the fact that BHG saw everything as an enemy (turtle included).

Just a quick note that I added an animation and observation to my previous post. (Didn't expect the OTT to move so fast on such a slow day.)

Woah. You two are lucky to get such a response. :)

On the point: I don't know what you would need, davean, but I did get nested spoilers functioning with my local JS. If I knew what was required to make it BBCode compliant....

2 Actually, he most likely said "this" many times.
3 It has been shown that Holmes actually never said, "It's elementary, my dear Watson!"
4 Is there a sub-theme there that hasn't been revealed?
