How chivalrous! Cueball clearly has very high regard for Megan...almost, one might say, as that of a man to his wife.

Or an (adult) brother to his sister.

Depending on how clean the water is it might be a good idea to clean Megan's wound here before they move on. Who knows how unsanitary the moleopard's claws might have been prior to the attack.

The moleopard didn't clean them first? How rude!

Prediction: the moleopard was actually infected with a genetically engineered virus which gives one power over the nanomachines embedded in the semencancercoffeebabies. It was not attacking, but simply delivering its cargo to the nearest human stick figure, as it had been taught. Megan will fall into a feverish sleep, and on awakening, will construct the greatest sandcastle ever seen.

ETA: pope! Decree: propose ways in which Megan might use her newfound control over semencancercoffeebabies.

(Earlier I had been wondering whether they had nanomachines all along. After all, back at the beach they seemed to have access to quite a variety of mildly advanced materials, and then Cueball seemed ready to quite casually move to a new, distant location. I wondered if he had some way of recreating their home environment. But subsequent events along the journey seem to imply that they don't have magic abilities to create manufactured objects.)

ETA: hmm, a few hours later, no longer pope.

Foible wrote:Hi All,

I've been following this comic since it started (thanks to everyone here making it readily available) but I haven't posted anything yet. Mainly because I've had nothing unique to contribute.

Anyway, a theory came to me about Cuegan over the weekend. I don't think I've seen it here so I'll share. These "simplified" versions of our characters are AI simulations inside a computer in the XKCD universe. They know facts out of context from their initial database and they're trying to learn new ones to connect what they do know. This would explain why they know that sand castles are crenelated but not know that living things feed their young. It also helps explain why they never considered the possibility of predators until they encounter one. Of course, this also means that the predator is being simulated and is still learning how to be an effective predator.

The whole universe in this comic feels like a minecraft or dwarf fortress game to me.

Don't worry... it's nigh impossible to contribute anything original on this thread anymore. The originality comes from saying the same thing again now the context has changed.

We have no patience for entropy.

Indeed.

I'm pretty sure that's the bad leg (no bandage evident on the back leg). Since she didn't wait for Cueball to help her over, maybe she's feeling better now!

My 4 year old son also has a very high regard for his 17 month old sister and I'm sure he'd make the same offer. Probably would not go well though - it usually doesn't.

Edit: sorry for the double post... I'll go run a newdata now. That should prevent a triple. :)

That's a good question; difficult to see in a stick-person... Based on frames 2234-2235, I'd say the moleopard injured Megan's left leg. Regarding the leg she will land on, ninja'd by Hertzog:

I think it was her left leg that was injured and bandaged.

If you look back at one of the previous frame there appears to be a lump representing the bandage.
Spoiler:

I agree that it's probably her left leg that was injured (assuming she doesn't normally stand in awkward positions or facing away from us), but it is clear that it's the injured leg she is going to land on since there's no bandage on the trailing one.

Perhaps it should have been named "Life" instead.

I liked the discussion sparked by rvloon's posts a few NP back. Since the OTC started, I've been trying to see some meaning behind the title and text, beyond a story that unfolds over Time and so we have to Wait For It. Some deeper reflection on what time is and what it its nature. I feel like they've poked at the edges a little bit, especially where they notice how deeply the river has cut into the rock, and marvel at how much time that must have taken. With that observation, they've faced the startling realization that there has been a lot more time than they had ever before imagined. Perhaps they've also gone a little in that direction with speculation about the "others" who no longer seem to be around, but have left some traces.

Maybe they learn a little more on the mountaintop.

Or maybe it's just a story to wait for. That's fun, too.

A soap opera taking place over months revealed an hour at a time through still images resembling a comic, depicting characters in a hardly everyday setting doing adventurous things. More of an action-adventure series, really, just rather slowly paced.

He finished the food and tried to name the sand pile.

Reminds me of the time I jumped over a ditch and very badly sprained my ankle.

To me it's the pace that makes it a soap. [fervent]But thank the GLR* the music is better![/fervent]

*The GLR and several Waiters, that is... 8-)

It depends. :| She didn't scream and fall to the ground, that's a really good sign, but landing on it could restart the bleeding. (I assume it had stopped, anyway; I can't imagine either one of them would be willing to go on if the wound was still bleeding profusely. Then again, “Are there other rivers?”)

Too Proud to Bag

Postby BlitzGirl » Tue Jun 25, 2013 3:47 am UTC

I wonder why Megan didn't accept Cueball's offer.

Is she annoyed by him trying to baby her?
Is she too proud to accept Cueball's help?
Is she attempting to mask the pain she's feeling?
Is she actually feeling much better (or at least was, before she landed)?
Did she simply misjudge how much a simple leap might further injure her leg?

In any case, it doesn't look like stick-figure romance is in the future anytime soon. Image

I think Megan was over confident in her abilities, and underestimated the amount of pain a simple jump might cause.
