A Dash of Ketchup and Haiku

Postby BlitzGirl » Wed Jul 03, 2013 4:32 pm UTC

We were bored, too, Megan. But thankfully it seems that GLR is no longer drawn by the Outside, and has more Time for Time, including fixing the chirping mustard.

Valarya wrote:@BlitzGirl: I love watching you draw in super-speed! You're so talented and it's adorable how your older videos were already TIME-related before the OTC ever existed. You were destined to be here. :D

D'aww, thanks Valarya. :) Perhaps we all were destined to be here...

Re: 1190: "Time" TdF Update

Postby charlie_grumbles » Wed Jul 03, 2013 5:57 pm UTC

Todays Tour de France was a fast race on mostly rolling terrain. Six riders led for most of the day, gaining a bit over 12 minutes on the field, but being caught near the end. Three riders have either abandoned or been dropped (an American) so there are 195 riders on 22 teams. Mark Cavendish from the Isle of Man won today in a fast sprint finish. As predicted it was a bit dangerous, with a crash very near the end and one earlier with a few km to ride. Everyone was able to finish. There were no changes in the standings with Simon Gerrans (Australia) still wearing the Yellow Jersey. But two of his teammates have exactly the same time and the top dozen riders are all within 10 seconds.

Tomorrow is 176km over mostly easy terrain (read: a fast race). The start is at 1300Heur (i.e. 1pm Universal and continental time) or at 7am in the Eastern US. http://letour.fr

The American, Ted King, who is no longer in the race was injured in the crash on the first day and had a lot of trouble in the team time trial yesterday. His team left him behind and he finished alone just outside the regulation time. The judges are sometimes lenient in these things but, I assume partly because of his injuries, were not this time, so he was unable to start today.

If you ride too slowly you get kicked out of the race, but there is a bit of (unofficial) competition for the "red lantern" position: The rider to finish the entire tour in the longest total time. Some years there is actual competition for this "award". Currently it is held by Tom Veelers from the Netherlands, who has lost a bit over 46 minutes in 5 days (768km = 477 miles). Cheer him on mscha

The TdF has several official competitions. I'll mention the others on future race days. The Yellow Jersey is the prize for best overall individual time. It is usually considered the "main" prize, unless you are a specialist in one of the other disciplines.

Someone speculated awhile back that you were in fact competing in the TdF. Does this haiku confirm that?

If it were true I'd be the oldest rider in the history of the tour. At my next b'day I'll have 70 (outside) years. So if I say "keep off my porch" watch out for the cane. I'm older than Edouard Louis Joseph, Baron Merckx, aka Eddie. When I was a young sport rider he was a bit of a hero, of course.

Today's race was the inspiration.
