Not unexpected, though: the sea had been continually and steadily rising during the first 1000 or so frames when we were on the beach. This is about where I'd expect it to be. (Assuming the same camera viewpoint as before, which is not a given.)

There are places where the tidal range can be up to 9.3q. But if Cuegan lived close to the beach, they should probably know about that. On the other hand:

And mscha is right that the sea1 has risen continually, so it's probably not a normal tide. BTW, mscha, I like that you now list your numbering as well as those from geekwagon and the Book of Aubron. Makes it really easy to find a particular frame independent of how it's referred to!
Alas, I have to coma now. See you all (and hopefully a bit more than the sea1 and the bucket2) in a fewpix!

There are places with much larger tidal ranges:

I wonder if we will see the sea rise at all while we watch the bucket bob about.

If it keeps rising still then eventually we are going to see a giant ship float past filled with molpies of all kinds lined up in pairs.

In the wake of Poseidon!

It's somewhat possible that this is just a cutaway, hence the lack of fade- quickly showing us what's going on then returning to Cuegan. Possibly unlikely, though.

Edit: Superninja'd by mscha. I should read more carefully.

I don't live near the sea, so correct me if I'm wrong, but it can't really be a tide can it? We've had at least one definite nightfall, so weird moon explanations aside, it can't have been a single tide rising throughout time. And while it could be a separate tide to the earlier one, given the length of time we've experienced in this day compared to the much longer time at the castle, this tide would have to be rising much, much faster.
Or am I being daft?

My mother grew up very near the Bay of Fundy. In those daysH, she said, the fishermen strung nets perpendicular to the shoreline. At high tide, fish would get tangled in them, and then at low tide, the fishermen would go out with horse-drawn carts -- with high wheel-bases -- to collect them. By the time they returned, as the tide was flowing, the water might be up to the horses' shoulders.

You're not being daft. If this is Earth, even Cassini Earth, it can't really be a regular tide. And even if (as I suppose, reluctantly) Time takes place in the Randallverse, Cuegan are aware the sea-level rise is abnormal.

5 million years ago, the Mediterranean was disconnected from the Atlantic ocean and mostly evaporated. When the Straits of Gibraltar broke open, the Mediterranean mostly refilled over only 2 years. Away from the Straits, that would look amount to a sustained, and quite confusing sea level rise.

Perhaps the sea just doesn't care much for Harleys. The only thing that really puzzled me about that story was why a guy in Japan would buy a Harley).

In that Telegraph story, they may or may not have been able to retrieve those vehicles, but on Sunset Beach on the west coast of New Zealand, I saw a car of which only the bumper still protruded above the sand. I'll post a picture if I can find one.

I wonder how far Cuegan will have traveled during the cut away. I hope to find that it is some distance, but certainly we may find ourselves right where we left off.

C'mon page 1024!

I bought my car because the one they rolled up had the number '1024' printed on it.

Yeah, there are very few things that would cause a sea level rise like that, and that is one of them. In fact, what else is even comparably plausible with so few observable side effects? Not sudden cataclysmic movement of the earth or moon. Something manmade, a dam or mega engineering project, perhaps. Extremely rapid melting of the antarctic or Greenland ice, maybe, but the sudden onset (but not SO sudden that it all happened in a big tsunami) is weird.

Randall is reminding us that Megan and Cueball's concern over what the sea is doing is important in itself, and not just for what else it might motivate them to do or discover. I admit I've been tending to think otherwise, that it was just a reason for Megan and Cueball to start exploring, because I thought whatever's causing it (e.g. heavy rainfall on distant lands draining into the opposite shore) was likely to stop on its own. With the rise now an order of magnitude higher than it was and likely still ongoing... not so much.

For some reason, to me, the idea of this happening is astonishing. Imagine watching that.

I'd imagine it would be

neat.

This didn't really contribute to the conversation, but I needed to voice my amazement. It would have been weird to suddenly bring this up to anyone sitting around me.

This is such a mystical time in the OTC. I wonder if this was what ancient civilizations felt like during an eclipse.

Hmm. Feeling considerably less mystified at the moment.

I have to coma, so it looks like I'm going to miss NP 1024.

NP 100000000002

I just want to remind people that it's not just a string of zeros that's important. When page 1024 begins, it will mean the pages in the OTT have doubled in quantity ten times since the first page.

The thread was started, creating the first page.
Then the number of pages doubled.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.
Then it doubled again.

It'll be a long time before the next time that happens. So, please still be partying when I return!

I'm surprised they're going up hill again. I figured that they had reached a plateau. I don't know why I assumed that. Oh well.

I am a little puzzled as to why we saw this (sea) scene now, and not when they were on the tower looking towards their home, which would be the more story-motivated placement for it. Usually an author will try to show us something by allowing one of the characters to see it, but here the OTA is showing us something, without alluding to it being seen by the characters, and making a point that He is doing so.

It's almost as if the scene is responding to questions here, rather than in the OTC.
